Tolbert FTW!!!!

Remind me again why it made so much sense to trade picks & move up for Hester?

Once again, my boy Tolbert gets it done while Hester bounces off the line & fails to convert on 4th down. Pitiful. Blame it on the OL, but I'll bet dollars to donuts that Tolbert would have converted that.

Wise up, Norv. Tolbert is your guy. Hester was a waste of picks, ST performance or not. Stay away from LSU this year - please!!!

I think we have had ample time to evaluate the trade up for Hester

And no matter how you slice it, it was a dumb trade. Tolbert or no Tolbert. It was looked at with skepticism at the time with the most optimistic of analysts trying to make it out to be similar logic to the Weddle trade from the previous year. In the end though it was a foolish mistake many due to the remaining depth at that position in the draft and the non-premium nature of the position Hester plays. And, of course, having a second round pick in the 2009 draft would have been awfully nice and would have probably resulted in a player that could outproduce Hester.

It was a bad trade. Hester’s not a bad player, but he wasn’t worth what was given up.

Exactly

And it probably wasn’t an appropriate spot in the draft to get him either.

It was a bad trade

and Hester may be a bad player as well. Time will tell but I am not sure that he will ever amount to much more than a special teams player.

If he’s a great special teamer, does that make him a bad player?

Every player that even

goes to an NFL camp is a great player. But most players (early draft picks for sure) are thinking that they will actually be playing on offense or defense.

So I guess if he turns out to be a great special teamer year after year, that would be great. But I don’t think that is what he hand in mind, or the Chargers envisioned when they traded up for him, or what many fans wanted him to accomplish with his NFL career.

Everything is relative but in the end I would say not being a regular on the offense would make him a “bad” player, probably “non factor” would be a better label for his career to this point.

Actually, the Raiders acquired that pick from New England.

They used it to select Mike Mitchell.

The only players really worth picking between our slot and our 3rd rounder might’ve been Phil Loadholt or Shonn Greene.

I've been

impressed with Tolbert since last year pre-season. I’ve NEVER understood why Hester was in there instead of him. Tolbert runs better, moves better, doesn’t get that lost “omg I’m going to slow down and try to decide who I should hit” look that Hester does. Stick Hester on Special teams and let the reign of Tolbert begin! /cheer

Basically

Tolbert got hurt part way through last year and they used Hester as the FB. He struggled at first and then held his own by the end. Basically, since Hester was the FB for the end of the year winning, Tolbert has had to win the job back.

Nothing too complicated about that.

I like Tolbert, He's a bat out of hell when they throw it to him out of the backfield.

Hester on the other hand seems slow to full speed, and I dont actually think Ive seen him hit it into high gear. He doesnt seem to have much lateral quickness or movement, which cant help in short yardage. overall, I just get a feeling that he lacks the feel for tha game, the instincts to just “go for it.”

IMO, it was not a smart move to take him where Smith did. My question to smith is, “what the hell did you see in him to trade away those picks?” I hope it wasnt a gut instinct.

He saw a player that perfectly fit this offense. He thought Hester was enough of a FB to take over for Neal, and enough of a RB to backup LT and give the Chargers a goal-line back. That’s three holes all filled by one player. If it had worked out, it would’ve been a brilliant move. Unfortunately, Jacob’s not a very good RB.

I believe

that AJ fell prey to the Nix/LSU connection on both Buster & Hester.

I think he fell prey to

His “proven winner” or “proven champion” bias. I have heard him use those phrases to describe players. Another one of those guys was Wilhelm (who won a National Championship at Ohio State).
