Sounds familiar
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.
Sproles
What about him, playing on the franchise tender? Would he go RFA like the rest, making it possible to sign him to a one year tender offer of say 2mil or what the first round tender is these days
We discussed this in my fan post that "sounded familiar"
Basically, we figure that his RFA tender will have to be the same as what they would have to give him if he were a franchise player again. The compensation for losing him would be that of a max-tendered RFA player instead of a franchise player.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.
By We are you talking about me and you
cause I dont remember. But what you are saying is if he’s tendered again, then it would cost the Chargers like an additional franchise tender? (Because it would be just that) But as a RFA the Chargers compensation for loosing him would be a 1st and a 3rd.
So in effect you’re saying he couldnt be tendered except for a non or an exclusive franchise tender?
Unless they tendered him at a first and a third, only to pay him the same amount as a 2nd tag tender??
We, as in BFTB,
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.
They could
Either Franchise him again. Or they could remove the tag and he’d become an RFA. They would still have to tender him the last year’s salary plus a percentage increase and the compensation for losing him would become a 1st and a 3rd.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.
Or, I guess
They could remove the franchise tag and then non-tender him. That would be a third option.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.
Yea that seems most likely
No way they franchise again, and no way they tender him only to pay him the same amount as the 2nd tag.
So Sproles would effectively go UFA.
If this CBA doesnt go through
And we hit on a few draft picks, the Chargers will be primed again next year for sure.
Explanation please?
Could someone explain to me what restricted vs unrestricted free agency means and what that means for the players listed above? I’m so out of the loop on this one.
Check out this link, and the links at the bottom of the page (if you want to know more)

This is the best thread Ive seen on the subject
Also, wouldn't the Chargers be barred from free agency?
Not that we normally make moves there, but aren’t the top 8 teams in the playoffs (which with a bye, the Chargers are by default) forbidden from signing free agents not from their own team?
There are some restrictions
But, obviously, they don’t sign many free agents to begin with. That restriction is also only limited to UFAs. And, finally, they will be allowed to sign UFAs from the top 4 teams in the playoffs.

Yo Wonko
Given the guys above without a CBA, take a guess on the tenders and their respective degrees.
I expect them to tender
Floyd, VJ, Merriman and McNeil for the max. Not sure what they do with Sproles since I don’t know what their budget looks like. I’d like to ditch Whitehurst and get a new future backup QB, but I could live with another year, but I don’t recall the degrees for the tenders, I’d assume whatever the minimum is. Not sure on Dobbins either. They have some options there and so decent ILB prospects in the draft, maybe they tender him, but not for the max. I could see Johnson getting a tender, but something tells me his status as a former 1st round pick keeps him from getting a low ball tender. They’ll probably just cut him loose. The other scrubs get cut loose.

Johnson
A first-round tender is only $2M.

I’m good with that.

$2 million
Is probably more than Nwagbuo, Scott and Boone make combined. But it seems fairly reasonable even for a backup.

Yea
Id expect Johnson to receive a 2nd round tender or get resigned, even if he hasnt played well; signing him would be low risk and high reward. Whitehurst and maybe even Dobbins would get the lowest tenders, compensation would be their round of selection I think.
And Vjack, Floyd, BigMac, and Lights the max tender or a new deal. I dont think Sproles resigns, and I doubt any of the others are tendered.
I would like the Chargers to resign BigMac though, some team might actually make an offer to him, even if they didnt have to give up a 1st and 3rd.
Agreed, although they might not go max on Floyd. I think that’ll come down to how valuable Norv and Philip think he is.
Whether or not anybody wants to admit it, the Chargers’ receiving group has little depth and is very top-heavy. Who knows what the team has in Buster Davis, Naanee probably isn’t ready to start (and might never be), Byrd is a question mark and Osgood is gone after 2009. Based on Floyd’s injury problems, and the upcoming negotiations for both he and VJ, the team is going to have to look into using a 3rd or 4th rounder (at the latest) on a WR that could be a 3rd or 4th WR immediately. That means less money to go around for the other guys.
The personnel and scheme dictates the roster. Right now, the Chargers are a pass-heavy offense that employs 3 RBs and 2 FBs. This is part of the reason they’re so short on offensive linemen. Next year, I expect 3 RBs and 1 FB (although Hester would probably be that 3rd RB). The number of receivers will probably stay the same, but the last WR will make the team because of his ability to catch the ball more than his ability as a special teamer. Probably.

Roster
We are carrying nine offensive linemen now, thats hardly short. I would highly doubt we go down to 4 totals RBs, even if we keep Manu who is set to go UFA I believe. Our issue in the beginning of the season was carrying 6 WRs; that I think will cease. This season has shown we need the extra cheese burger eater, especially along the Dline.
Agree with your thoughts
on the WR position. I would not be surprised to see a WR picked in rounds one or two, it is too important of a position for this team.
Boone will get about that when his contract is up if he continues to play like this. Nwagbuo’s next contract depends entirely on 2010.

If we kick Whitehurst to the curb
do we bring in a pro-style QB or a scrambler who can mix up the offense a little bit? These latter would be guys like Joe Webb out of UAB, Thaddeus Lewis of Duke, or Matt Groethe from USF— late-rounders or UDFAs. As far as pocket passers or more traditional QBs, keep and eye on John Skelton of Fordham.

After a little more research, my favorite of these is Grothe.
He sounds like a high-character guy and is described as elusive within the pocket and having good speed outside of it. He also missed most of his senior year with an injury, which could cause him to sink to the bottom of this year’s class.

I just think the Chargers tender Whitehurst
They could tender him at the lowest level, and basically pay him 700K; which is a couple hundred K more than the league min.
If he were to get signed by another organization the Chargers would receive a 3rd rounder; which corresponds to round he was selected in.
Volek is a free agent in 2010, so the Chargers could burn a late round selection, to try and develop into a number 2.
