Chargers Team Awards
As you may or may not know, each year each NFL team gathers votes from the players on the team for awards such as Team MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, and so forth. They usually have silly rules like the guy who is Team MVP can't also win Player of the Year for his side of the ball, and if the top 2 vote-getters are close they share the award. Although we don't know what those rules are in the Chargers locker room, the following list still shows which players are the most respected and most valued by their teammates .
For the 2009-2010 season, here are your winners:
Team MVP: Philip Rivers, QB
Offensive Player of the Year: Antonio Gates, TE and Vincent Jackson, WR
Offensive Lineman of the Year: Marcus McNeill, LT
Defensive Player of the Year: Quentin Jammer, CB and Shaun Phillips, OLB
Special Teams Player of the Year: Kassim Osgood, WR
Inspirational Player of the Year: Stephen Cooper, ILB

Agreed
Weddle should have gotten the nod over Jammer, IMO.

They’re about tied for me.

I'm a big Jammer fan
And I consider him to be a shut down corner, but besides the fact that he has 1 more INT than Weddle and 1 more forced fumble, Weddle is ahead in every other category. EW- 68 solo tackles, 14 assists, 2 INTs, 1 TD, 0 FF.
QJ- 47 solo tackles, 11 assists, 3 INTs, 0 TDs, 1 FF.
It is about even but I would’ve givin it to Weddle.

Not to mention
Weddle has 2 KOs, Higgins and Boss. LOL

Really? I’d have given it to Jammer.

I'm happy for Jammer
And I think seniority has a lot to do with him getting it over Weddle. But if you see my above comments you’ll see that Weddle’s numbers are better than Jammer’s, with the exception of Jammer’s 1 more INT and 1 more forced fumble.
by SoCalBoltFan on Dec 30, 2009 3:20 PM PST up reply actions
His numbers are “better,” but Jammer is a more valuable player. He shuts down one half of the field and is very good in run support.

They are both extremely valuable
I’m just happy to have both of them playing at such a high level. We’ll just leave it at that.

I'd have given it
to S. Phillips alone; he is having one hell of a season.

He really is
Lets hope he can carry that momentum into the playoffs!

Me too, actually
or maybe even Tolbert. However, since the players take into account leadership it belongs to Kassim. He has been the best Special Teams captain I’ve ever seen this eason.

Exactly
Castillo has helped a lot more than his numbers indicate.

you forgot rookie of the year...
MVP: Philip Rivers
Offensive Player: Vincent Jackson/Antonio Gates
Lineman: Marcus McNeill
Defensive Player: Quentin Jammer/Shaun Phillips (Eric Weddle is really close, but he missed two games)
Special Teams: Kassim Osgood/Nate Kaeding
Inspirational Player: This is a really tough one… possibly Dombrowski/Mruczkowski (due to them being put in without knowing they would play this much and playing pretty well for the majority of the season)… or u could go the D-line by committee – Scott, Boone, Johnson, Martin – have been pretty successful since Jamal has been down
Rookie: Louis Vasquez (Ellison is VERY close, but im giving the nod to Vasquez, hes been dominant
I think "Inspirational"..
Is impossible to tell as a mere fan, you need to actually be a member of the team to know who inspires you and everyone else. We just see the guys on Sunday, it’s easy to forget that that’s only about a sixth or seventh of their actual job.
Exactly
I bet Cooper gets a lot of love for his direction in practice, after practice, in the film room, before the game, etc. etc. With Merriman gone last year and Jamal out this year, Cooper has become the unrivaled leader of the defense. I really wouldn’t be surprised if Cooper spends the rest of his career in SD and then becomes a LB coach after retiring (I think Ray Lewis will do the same thing in Baltimore).

Ray Lewis
I think Lewis will focus his leadership abilities off of the football field. He’s a leader in the Baltimore community already.
I'm the first person to admit that I'm wrong about a lot of things, but I'm going to be the last person to admit I'm wrong about what we're currently talking about.
These are not my choices. These winners were chosen by the players on the team. There is no Chargers rookie of the year award.

I have nominations for some awards
Awards I would assign differently:
ST: Most accurate kicker in history
Inspiration or OL: Mooch should have shared one of these awards
Awards not given out:
Rookie: Vasquez, Nwagbuo runner-up
Most Improved: Mruczkowski, Gregory runner-up
And not awards the team can dish out, but…
Goats of the Year: Hart, Injury Bug
Draft Pick of the Year: Ellison, Vasquez runner-up
Acquisition of the Year: The whole DL
Man of the Year: AJ Smith

One thing I've heard all year that I'm not sure about
I don’t think Nwagbuo is really a rookie. Didn’t he see some limited action with the Giants last year?

According to Wiki
He was signed by the Giants as a UFA last year, so you are correct he is not a rookie.
by SoCalBoltFan on Dec 31, 2009 11:02 AM PST up reply actions
He has no stats last season. If he spent the year on the practice squad, or went the entire year without being active for a game, he’s still technically a rookie according to NFL rules.

I did not know that
So technically if Byrd sees some playing time in 2010 it will be considered his rookie season, even though he was drafted last year?
by SoCalBoltFan on Dec 31, 2009 11:15 AM PST up reply actions
Mruczkowski was not the lineman of the year. Not even close. If we’re going with both lines (which I think they are), I’d rank them like this….
1. McNeill
2. Castillo
3. Boone
4. Dielman
5. Vasquez
6. Clary
7. Scott
8. Johnson

For all the progress Mooch has made this year
in his first start this season, he missed an assignment. You may remember that play— it was the one where Sproles got blow’d up by Ray Lewis.
