Ask Music City Miracles

Hello Charger fans,

Jimmy from Music City Miracles here to solicit any questions you may have about the Tennessee Titans.  Personally I do not have a good feeling about this game because the Titans are worse than horrific against the pass.  We have a corner, Nick Harper, who is allowing 100% of the passes thrown to his side to be completed.  That stat is completely true.

Anyway, leave any questions you have about the Titans below and someone from the site will be glad to answer them.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!

There was an incident a few years back where (allegedly) Fischer told his players he wanted Merriman hurt after Merriman pushed Young to the ground after a simple run-up-the-gut play. Later that game Merriman injured his knee, which he is still recovering from. Also, late in that game Lendale White got a TD and did the “Lights Out” dance. Chargers fans have mostly forgotten, but the Chargers players still “hate” the Titans for it (according to local newspeople) and are looking for a little revenge.

That could just be the Bolts trying to get up for the game, but if it’s not this thing could get dirty in a hurry.

Oh that

I read Merriman is still upset about the legal hit the Titans put on him after his illegal hit on Vince Young. The Titans are over it as far as I know.

And what exactly was legal about the hit they put on Merriman? The hit that injured him was well after the whistle and well away from the play

There was nothing wrong with the block that the TE in motion put on him before that though

nice to come over..

But I hate the Titans. We lost two guys in that game. Merriman in what I remember to be a cheap shot. And Rivers, also a shot to his knees.

So two of our two key players were taken out by shots away from the play by shots to the knees.

Rivers had to play the rest of the season with hobbled knees and had off-season surgery. Merriman we lost for over a season.

i don't blame other teams for our injuries

just when they are cheap shots

and i can add to the list; in the playoff game against tennessee the same year, gates caught a pass and fell to the ground; he thought about getting up but then stayed down and kind of protected himself against the defenders, but just sitting on the ground

instead of just tapping him down, tennessee came in and took a shot (legal); that is the play that messed up his toe

That is a tricky question

Absolutely if we would have gotten this Vince the whole time. It is hard to say how well he would have played from the beginning, but it is safe to say that this VY would have won 2-3 of those games and have us sitting in a much better position.

There are a million differences

but the two biggest are his ability to read a defense and his footwork which has drastically improved his accuracy.

In his first stint starting we saw a lot of bad throws on plays where he simply misread the defense. He has only done that a couple of times in his past 8 games.

The other thing he struggled with was setting his feet before he threw. He obviously did a ton of work on that in his time off and has greatly improved his footwork which has made him incalculably (Michael Scott) more accurate.

Physicalness

For the past couple years I always thought the Titans were one of the most physical teams in the league. Has that been the case this year as well? Also, can you name some players on the Titans that have played well this season that we as chargers fans might not be familiar with? Thanks.

by sdpads24 on Dec 21, 2009 10:21 PM PST reply actions

This is still a physical team

but they are not as physical as they have been in years past.

You might or might not be familiar with Kenny Britt. He was the first round pick, but you might have ignored that because Tennessee is where receivers go to die. Britt is the first receiver the Titans have had in a while that can run routes and catch the football so WATCH OUT!!

Another guy is middle linebacker Stephen Tulloch. He is having a very good year and will need to step it up even more now with Keith Bulluck and David Thornton out.

Despite having a pourous run D

The Chargers have, if I’m not mistaken, only let up one hundred yard rusher this year, Rashard Mendenhall in Pittsburgh back in week 4. How confident are you that the Titans will be able to establish the run early in the game and get Chris Johnson over the century mark?

by SteelAngel2000 on Dec 22, 2009 2:26 AM PST reply actions

If the defense can keep the game close

I think they will be able to get CJ over the 100-yard mark. The problem is we have trouble defending the pass, and if it gets out of hand we will have to abandon the game plan.

Here's a question back at yall

Your defense ranks 21st in the league giving up 116.9 yards per game. This week you are facing the guy who leads the league (and has a 377 yard lead over #2). What makes you so confident you can hold him to such a small #? Not trying to be smart- just asking.

We don’t give up the big play and we have a pretty good offense that can take away the opponents running game. You may be right that they would do it in a blow out. This is just my take.

You pointed to it above

If the Chargers can get a decent lead early on, then the Titans will likely have to abandon the run for the most part, limiting his carries. Limit CJ’s carries and that will keep his yardage down.

Actually Jimmy

our defense is ranked 13th in the league. Nevertheless, we have had our problems stopping the run between the 20s. No doubt, with the past history between these two teams, and with all that’s at stake, it will be a close game. That I know for sure. If we can get our passing game going early and get a lead and quiet the crowd, it will obviously be key to helping with stopping the run game and the CJ. Should be fun to watch

Specifically

Jimmy was talking about rushing yards per game. He even said so.

There is no such rank for “total team defense”, it’s an ambiguous concept. There are however some individuals out there who choose to confuse people use the term synonymously with number of yards allowed by the defense. This is incorrect and should be stopped unless the purpose of doing so is to make yourself sound illiterate or unintelligent.

I suspect something related to that interchangeability of an ambiguous concept and a stat is problem where this thread went astray. If you want to use statistics it’s best to preface your number with what your stat is. The funny thing was that Jimmy did this originally and said yards per game (which made sense since he was talking about how many yards CJ would get). Yet other people started throwing out numbers that were unrelated to this. If you say a team is 13th in something, you should probably say what it is. It seems that it in this case in was points per game, which is neither a rushing stat or helpful in predicting how many yards CJ would run for.

Scaife is a solid player. We also have Alge Crumpler who is now somewhere around 300 lbs. Needless to say, he has a little trouble getting down the field.

We traded a pick in the 2010 draft to move up and get TE Jared Cook last year, featured him a lot in the preseason, and then decided to keep him on the sideline during the year.

What happened to your defense from last year? In 2008, everyone was raving about Nick Harper and Cortland Finnegan as the best CB tandem in the league.

by JiltedEmu on Dec 22, 2009 11:24 AM PST reply actions

I didn't hear anyone say that about our corners

Finnegan is very good. Harper was serviceable at best even last year. Now he is getting service by every quarterback we play. HIYOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

There have been a variety of issues from the loss of Albert, to injuries, to safeties deciding they are linebackers instead of safeties. The defense has been improved of late, but now with Bulluck and Thornton on the shelf it will probably be pretty bad again.

Finnegan would scare me if any CB scared me.

He’s 5’9" but can jump with VJ.

I think you mean the Safeties.

You might be mistaking them for our 2009 probowl safeties who were raved about as the best saftey tandem last season. Their level of play was terrible during the early part of the season; however, they’ve seem to have turned it around lately. Although they are still playing lower than expected.

What is Vince Young's contract situation?

Sorry to slip in a second question, but I heard that he pulled a hamstring (?) a week or so ago, any news on that injury?

by HuangDi on Dec 22, 2009 3:22 PM PST reply actions

Vince is owed a big roster bonus before next year

3 months ago I would have told you there was no shot the Titans would pay that. I still think they will try and get him to restructure, but they might end up just paying it to him (especially if there is no cap next year).

He played through the injury last week, and didn’t seem to be too limited. He also isn’t on the injury report today.

Jimmy, including roster bonuses

what is he owed next year? and when does his current contract end (assuming no extensions)? I assume that he is still on his rookie deal.

by HuangDi on Dec 23, 2009 1:08 AM PST up reply actions

His cap number next year

is somewhere around $14 million.

He signed a 6-year deal in 2006.

Is Vince Young really playing better to your eyes?

Or is his apparent improvement a function of other things—improved ground game, weaker opponents, etc.

Having Chris Johnson absolutely helps him,

but he is playing so much better. I have watched him play against bad teams in the past, and he didn’t look anywhere close to this good. He is a different player now.

No right or wrong answer to this

but if you had to guess, assuming Bud Adams did not intervene (as was widely reported), do you think that Fisher would have made the QB switch that same week anyway? If not, what was he waiting for, or had he already given up on him?

by HuangDi on Dec 23, 2009 1:11 AM PST reply actions

I like to believe Fisher would have

made the switch anyway, but I am not sure that he would have. He is one stubborn dude (see Harper, Nick).

I think Fisher had already given up on him, but of course we will never know.

Whatever the real circumstances were

Titans fans have to be hugely relieved that Vince is showing that he can win consistently. That would have been kind of demoralizing to be forced to draft another QB next year (a la Oakland). Side note, I remember the 2007 playoff game in SD. Vince Young had a lot of confidence going into that game. In the first quarter, he had the titans on the move a couple times. The game kind of turned when Merriman forced a fumble on the Chargers half of the field, but otherwise, I thought VY played okay for his first playoff game (on the road no less).

How is your wr's outside of britt

How do you feel like Hawkins is progressing

by elemenohpee on Dec 23, 2009 8:02 PM PST via mobile reply actions

The funny thing about Hawkins

is that we all ripped him because he never got on the field, but every time he has gotten on the field this year he has made big plays. The specific knock on him seems to be that he has trouble learning his assignments.

Outside of that- Justin Gage is a solid receiver who runs kinda hot and cold. He is in the middle of a hot streak right now. Nate Washington was brought in to stretch the field. He has done that, which is good, but sometimes he forgets to catch the ball, which is bad.

How is your pass rush?

Who are your main pressure guys? Has Van Den Bosh missed Haynesworth? He always seemed to benefit from all the extra attention given to Haynesworth. The Chargers seem to deal with the outside rush pretty well, but have had trouble with pressure up the middle in the past, do you have an inside backers or safeties who have sucess blitzing up the middle?
