NFL.com is reporting the same for Bullock
Thornton has missed a lot of time this year including games they’ve won and played hurt in others, so I’m not sure that changes things much. Losing a team leader like Bullock is bigger than just missing his play on the field.

Music City Miracles was hinting that the defense took a big dive yesterday after Bulluck left the field, so it’s huge.

They'll still play a tough game.
but I still see us getting a W.

I'm getting less worried about the tough, physical game we've predicted
And more anxious about just what sort of performance Chris Johnson will have.

Yup
We have no chance to stop him. I’m convinced he’ll break AP’s record.

We could get a lucky turnover or two
score quickly, and take away the run.

They'd still run
It’s their best chance at getting 20 yards on a single play.

CJ will have an ordinary CJ day.
Triple digits, ok, but not 200 yards. I understand the concern going into this game, but I still have a feeling that it’ll be like a 10-point win.

The Titans are already all-but-out, while this game could get the Chargers a bye round as a Christmas present.

Our only chance is to score fast all day.
That way we might be able to exhaust CJ to something like 40 carries.

I'll just be happy if we get out of there
without serious injury. I’m expecting them to lose, I just don’t want that team to screw up ANOTHER playoff run.

You are very right, Keith Bulluck is a HUGE blow for us.
He is the leader of our defense, and once he went out in the second half yesterday, the Dolphins had their way running the ball.

Well
you won’t have to worry much about the Chargers running the ball.

How worried are you guys about this game?
You don’t have nearly as much to play for as we do, but you are definitely one of the top 4 teams in the league. In the last 8 weeks or so though, I would say the Chargers and Titans are the two hottest teams in the league.

We don't really need to win, we can lose and still get the #2 seed by beating the hapless Redskins at home
You guys MUST win. So I’m not really worried. Then again, we took down a much tougher Titans team twice in 2007.

Extremely worried.
I would go as far as to say the Chargers will likely lose. We just have no answer for Chris Johnson.

I somewhat agree.
This is going to be a shootout with two bad defenses.

IDK
I think our defense has played pretty well against some good RBs lately. Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, Brian Westbrook, Buckhalter/Moreno, Marion the Barbarian, Cedric Benson. These are all pretty good RBs if not household names and (knock on wood) they have not been able to produce when it counted. Our goaline defense is looking very good as of late whether teams are trying to pass it in or pound it in, we have been doing a great job of holding them. We may give up a lot of yardage between the 20s, but if TEN is going to win they will need to find a way to score TDs NOT FGs in the red zone. Teams just haven’t done that consistantly against our D.

None of those guys
Would finish within 10 yards of Chris Johnson in a 40 yard dash. He may not be the bruiser those guys are, but he breaks tackles and is so much faster and our weakness this year is keeping guys from the “edge” if we can’t keep him from the edge, we don’t stand a chance.

Bengals couldn't run at all yesterday
Had 114 yards rushing but 61 of those came on those two Maddenesque Mike Vick 99 speed plays where they ran all the way to one sideline, stopped, then ran all the way to the other sideline and make a huge gain (one for C. Johnson and one for L. Johnson). Realistically, they only had 53 “traditional” rushing yards.

I don't really think
That this team understands how to not have something to play for. I can’t imagine this group letting up just because the division is in hand. That seems like something a less-veteran club would do. These guys want to prove themselves week in and week out. I could also see the team spinning the first round bye as a way to “win one for our injured guys”.

Not just that
But as PR17 likes to point out, he hates to lose. While I think that they’ll look to rest some people, and avoid any injuries, I don’t see the Chargers “playing to not lose”.
As you implied, Wonko, this is a veteran team. If they’ve really bought into the whole “one game at a time” mantra, then I’m betting that they’re playing to win.

Not concerned
The Chargers generally destroy teams with suspect defenses, just by getting up and then teeing off on the opposition quarterback.
by AirNorval on Dec 21, 2009 6:04 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't trust any team against the Chargers.
The Titans will run the ball well, but they’ll be forced to play from long fields and they’ll have to punt or FG frequently. They’re not good enough in the air to make SD pick its poison, with or without Jammer: Cason is starter-quality. San Diego will rack up the points, because that’s what they do.
And both teams need this game, not in equal measure, but not with equal probability either. If the Titans lose they’re out, but if they win, they’re probably out anyway. The Chargers are basically facing a triple-elimination playoff game: if they don’t win one of their next two, they probably have to play a wildcard, but if they beat the Titans they get a meaningless home finale and then a week off.

I talk junk
Cause the Chargers are playing well, but I do like the Titans. I remember that game a couple years ago when Fisher put a hit on Lights. People say it wasnt true, but anyone who knows football will tell you otherwise. I know if someone got a shot on Rivers that Dirty didnt think was legit, he’d blast the dude himself.
I remember though when the Titans drafted CJ; all the talking heads were talking junk talking about how they need a play making receiver.
I guess the Titans got one, that could play running back too. How anyone can say AP or any current back is better than CJ is beyond me.
by AirNorval on Dec 21, 2009 8:20 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed.
There are backs playing now who’ve done more than CJ, and there is probably at least one back playing now who’s done more than CJ will ever do (I say this only because one of the two greatest RBs of all time is still playing), but there’s nobody playing at a higher level right now, though Jackson and Peterson aren’t too far off.

Chargers cant wait to eliminate
t.he Titans. I can guarantee that we hang 35+ points on their horrible defense.
by AirNorval on Dec 21, 2009 5:59 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
That's a little harsh, but not unrealistic
Why not? No NFL team is unbeatable, but these Chargers have the entire puzzle put together. They have weaknesses, but they answer every one with a complementary strength that’s very hard to counter. I’m not guaranteeing anything and whatever can happen on Sunday can also happen on Friday, but I wouldn’t take anybody to beat them at even money.
I’m of two minds. The first says “Trap game! Trap game! TRAP GAME!!!” To which the second responds, “yeah, so?” These guys have sort of inured us to traps by finding ways to shine through, but that doesn’t mean we can’t lose tough games to .500+ teams, and the Titans by beating us to get to 8-7 would kind of qualify for that. And it’s a road game on a short week with yet another starting Center….
This offense really needs a nickname, though. It’s extremely entertaining.

Yup.
First and ten, opposing QB is generally in one of two positions: down 3 or 7 more points since last time, or field position sucks horsenuts. Forget about DVOA: that’s the real predictor of success. Who cares if the opponent can run for 5-11 yards on 1st/10 70% of the time, if you can’t punch it in and you need to get 6 first downs to do it?
