Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

If there is good news for the Chargers, it is that they were already preparing to welcome Nick Hardwick back to practice in his latest attempt at a return to the lineup. A team source said Hardwick is expected to play Friday at Tennessee.

Hardwick hasn’t played since tearing ligaments in his ankle in the season opener. He hasn’t practiced in two weeks after suffering a setback in early December.

Mruczkowski’s season appears to be finished

Mooch is gone for the year, unfortunately. Hardwick should be back on Friday, as should Jammer. Phillips is fine, even though he was knocked out temporarily in the 3rd quarter.

No surprise if you watched

Malcom Floyd put a tooth through his lip early in the first quarter. Shots of him on the sideline showed a severely swollen lip.

Floyd impressed me the most

by coming back in the game and making a few more plays. In past seasons it didn’t seem to take much to make Floyd miss a lot of game time with injuries (maybe it was just bad luck). But it was nice to see him come back in and run hard after taking the shot.

Reports range from

“Don’t know” to “Will probably play Friday”. That probably means he feels alright, but they want to do some tests before they clear him.

I noticed

that even though he didnt come back in the game, they didnt take his helmet. When there’s no chance for you to return someone steals your helmet, so thats a very good sign.

Props to Mooch

for the job that he’s done while filling in for Hardwick. Hopefully the injury isn’t too extensive.

Judging by the tweets from Acee and Marty1090 today

It doesn’t sound like they are ready to IR Mooch just yet. They are just saying he’s out for Friday. If that’s the case, then obvious Green will be active Friday (he was this past game anyway, but didn’t play) and they’ll add somebody from the inactive list like Spillman or Highes (since Jammer is dinged up).

Oh wait

Duh. Hardwick has to come from the inactive list.

and

We probably don’t need another DB since we’ll mostly want to focus on the Titan ground attack on D.

In that vein

They may activate Garay since Cesaire could be out.

Yea I was talking about the 53

Just assume Moochie is IRd, now can you speculate on a roster move please?

by AirNorval on Dec 21, 2009 11:49 AM PST up reply actions

I'm just saying its a little premature

Acee tweeted 50 minutes ago that Mooch was just about to get tests.

If he does get IRed, the Chargers are carrying 3 OTs (McNeill, Dombo, Runyan), 3 OGs (Dielman, Vazquez and Green) and 2 Cs (Hardwick and Norman). They don’t have anyone else with C experience, unless you consider Green as the next in line (I think they might look outside the organization). The only need another C if Hardwick suffers another setback. If Green does become the backup C or they worry that he will be soon, they will want another OG and the guy on the PS that fits that need is Joe Toledo (or maybe Corey Clark, but he’s listed as an OT). Andre Coleman could get called up if they decide they need more DL with Cesaire’s injury. I can’t really speculate on outside the organization guys.

For those who don’t know, the other PS guys are WR Gary Banks, DE Derrick Jones and LB Darry Beckwith. I don’t foresee the Chargers signing any of those guys to the 53 man roster.

Could be Jones instead of Garay?

Ali Villanueva (OT/WR, Army) has 460 yards and 5 TDs in only 7 games with a mediocre quarterback. Just sayin'...

You mean instead of Coleman?

Garay is already on the 53.

^Yeah, that's what I meant.

IT APPEARS

That Green will serve as the emergency center. IF Moochie does go to IR, I would think Clark would be activated. Even though he’s listed as a OT he would presumably have three weaks to take snaps at guard

by AirNorval on Dec 21, 2009 9:38 PM PST up reply actions

Clark played a lot of RG in training camp.

That'll do Mooch. That'll do.

Props for a workmanlike season picking up for Hardwick!
