San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman has started all 11 games this season. But the Chargers are concerned that he won't be able to make it five more.
Kevin Acee of the Union-Tribune reports that foot tendinitis and other injuries that have limited Merriman's playing time might force him to miss Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns -- and more games after that.
The Chargers signed linebacker Marques Harris Tuesday to bolster their linebacker depth. In addition to Merriman's injuries, linebackers Jyles Tucker and Antwan Applewhite have been placed on injured reserve.
Chargers coach Norv Turner said he might sideline Merriman for the Browns game, and Acee reports that Turner and other team officials think Merriman won't get better unless he rests.
Chargers concerned about Merriman's injuries | ProFootballTalk.com
This is just about the least surprising news ever. We all knew Merriman would not suit up against the Browns, and we all knew he wouldn't be 100% after that.

aaaaAAAHHHRRRRGGHHH!!!!
All i can think of is Troy Polamalu’s gangster ass foot workouts.
No one knows what im talking about…
Loo loo loo, I've got some apples--GO CHARGERS!
jeez...
is this the side effect of getting off the juice? Nagging injuries that don’t heal?
It’s better to have him back in few weeks for the stretch run and playoffs then playing him through and possibly being out for the season.
I think this signals that he won’t be re-signed in the off season. Or they can sign him for more reasonable contract because there won’t be frenzy over him in the open market.
Why won't anybody let that go....
That was 3 years ago. That’s a lifetime.
He has nagging injuries this season because he spent an entire season away from football. He has them because he was favoring his good knee in the beginning of the season. A foot injury has nothing to do with “the juice”.

It’s also worth noting that his best season as a pro was in 2007 a year after his suspension.

Wow
I didn’t expect him to play this week but hearing that he may not finish the season is concerning. If he goes on IR, that would be 8(!) and that would be 3 OLB we have lost.
Considering we have 3 OLB hurt and 2/3 of our starting DL hurt, this might be the best job of coaching for the Chargers in a long time.

8 is really not that many...
and that’s not what the article says. It basically says he’ll miss Cleveland and they’re not 100% sure that he’ll be healthy enough to play against Dallas either. Nothing to panic about.

No panic
because the division sucks AND how well the rookies and free agents have played.
2007-2 players placed on IR
2008-4 players placed on IR
But to see more players placed on IR this year than the last 2 years combined is a bit concerning. And the talk of an 8th is why I think the coaching has done a good job with guys like Boone, Siler, and Dombrowski contributing to a good enough defense.

Maybe
But I’m leaning more towards John’s statement continuing his logic from earlier:
He has nagging injuries this season because he spent an entire season away from football.
Yup
Merriman needs rest, but sitting the guy for a whole month would just make him rusty heading into the playoffs. A week off, maybe two, and get him back on the field.

OK, I know nothing about the first thing that comes to mind.
So I’ll phrase it as a question.
Is it time to look into replacing some strength/conditioning staff?

I don't think so
Unless there are a number of issues that you can point directly in the category of “non-traumatic”. Are we getting a lot of hamstrings, quad and calf strains? Are we seeing guys cramping up? Are we seeing guys return from injury in the normal time frame, but only to find out they aren’t at full strength? I don’t see that. I see concussions, turned ankles, sprained knees, torn hamstring and torn biceps. Those are traumatic injuries that you can’t train against and the training staff would only have fault if they couldn’t get guys back on the field in a reasonable time frame. In all fairness though, there have been multiple groin strains, but they were to the punter and I will talk about my opinion on Merriman’s.
I think, in Merriman’s case, it’s more likely that he’s trying to push himself harder than he can go. It started last year when he decided to forgo surgery and then this year he played through the groin injury (a typical cascade injury from regaining the feel for the repaired leg) instead of letting it heal and that cascade again to the toe (since he had to compensate for the knee and groin issues). The only way I could see the training staff at fault is if they weren’t giving him proper advice, but I think it’s more likely they were and he pushed himself too far in spite of it. I could be wrong.

Jammer
has gone out a few games with cramps mostly last year but at least once this season I think; Cesaire was out early with calf strain; Castillo is out with a calf strain; Buster has his ongoing groin issue as do LT, Scifres and Merriman as you note. Travis Johnson came with a busted groin, I guess it’s hard to blame that on our trainers. Thank god Binn is made of fricken steel.
I dunno, a bit of both I reckon.

A could agree with "a bit of both"
I’m definitely not arguing that the Chargers have the best training staff. Will Carroll ranked the Jets as the best in that category. The Chargers ranked 8th based on the last 3 years worth of data (2006-2008). The Bengals were the worse for those that were curious.

Our OLB's are like the 08' Denver Running Backs!
Just dropping like flies. That Larry English pick is starting to look more and more like a smart move
couldnt agree more
hopefully harris will help out a bit but who knows..
i also liked what i saw out of James Holt but hes just an undrafted rookie and undersized, we cant expect too much of him
Nice to meet you! I mean, you kindov suck but my dad says you might be good some day. (Stan Marsh talking to Jay Cutler on South Park)
I don’t agree. A #16 pick should’ve been contributing on a weekly basis by now.
"I did not invent the wheel, I was the crooked spoke adjacent." - Aesop Rock
Not keen on that standard. Yes, top drafted OLBs are plug-and-play: like RBs, they only get a little better in their second year. But there’s nothing wrong with using a first-rounder as an insurance policy and long-term answer for a high-value position with a short-term on-roster answer, like Larry English. As an aside, there’s also nothing wrong with using a first-rounder on a position that has steep entry barriers and usually takes time to develop, either, like all those cornerbacks. Heck, Philip Rivers fell in both categories.

You're expectations for rookies are WAY to high.
You have to give these guys until at least Season #2 to even start to judge them.
