Questions About the Cowboys? Ask BTB!
Hey Chargers' fans! I'm Aaron, one of the writers at Blogging The Boys. John is answering questions from our bloggers over there, so we thought we'd reciprocate with a FanPost of our own here.
First, I'm a native Californian like I assume many of you are; though, I now reside in San Antonio. Somehow, amidst a family full of 49ers' fans, I grew up so much in awe of Tony Dorsett that I quickly became a Dallas fan. From living in NorCal for so long, I did get to see some Chargers' games when the Raiders' home games were blacked out (ha!). San Diego is a beautiful city...spent my 21st birthday there at some bar on the beach watching bikini modeling shoots.
Anyways, enough about me...let's talk football!
Big, BIG matchup. Of the Cowboys' four losses, three of those came on the road--the only loss at home was the two point one to the Giants in Week Two. We know that you guys have won seven in a row, so fans here seem a bit comforted in the fact that we face you guys in our home.
In our loss to the Giants last week, Tony Romo and Jason Witten had career days. The passing game, which had been stifled recently by Green Bay and Washington, continued to surge forward as it did on Thanksgiving vs. the Raiders. Ironically, the units that had been our strongest--defense and special teams--failed against the Giants in allowing big plays for big scores. Prior to that, nobody scored more than 20 points on us since the Falcons did (21) in Week Seven.

Some more recent points to consider (I'll talk in first-person plural to make things simpler):
- Our running game comes up big in games, but can be absolutely nullified in others. It's annoying.
- There is some sort of chemistry issue between K Nick Folk and holder, Mat McBriar (P). Tony Romo volunteered yesterday to begin practicing holding duties again. Insert Seattle playoff joke here: ___________________.
- Injuries: FS Ken Hamlin is doubtful with a high ankle sprain. Converted CB Alan Ball has taken his place and has done an adequate job. The same can be said for RT Doug Free, who took over for Marc Colombo (broken fibula).
- Evidently, the "JerryTron" will roll out a new enhancement featuring some 3D-action this week against your Chargers.
- Finally, thank you for Igor Olshansky. He's a beast against the running game and looks to be improving with each week (plus, he's from Oregon...Go Ducks!).

Feel free to post your questions here; we will check in regularly to answer them. Looking forward to a great game!

We miss Igor, he was the most consistent run-stopper on the team, but not at that price. I know with Jerry as owner it doesn’t really matter, but gosh did Igor get paid.
Thanks for Kevin Burnett. He’s awesome when he’s healthy.

Burnett was rarely healthy for us, as well.
Frustrating, but in some games he really laid the wood. Does he get caught behind plays at times for you guys?
Igor was a value pickup for us, compared to what it would have cost us to keep Chris Canty. The Giants’ price was nothing in the range of what Jerry was willing to spend, especially considering DeMarcus Ware was due for an extension.

Not really
Actually, when he’s healthy, he’s been great at bursting through the line to break up plays in the backfield. He’s positively fierce when he’s on the field.
Agreed. 3-4 defensive linemen are becoming way overpriced, which is why the Chargers attempt to fill those roles with younger players (draft picks).

What do you expect from this game?
In the games that I have seen the Cowboys play they have been anywhere from great (Sunday Night @ Philly) to atrocious (vs. Giants @ home). Looking at this game has always been a toss up for me because it seems like you have be inconsistent and don’t know what to expect.
The one and only AzDuck
From the Cowboys' perspective, I expect them to tighten up on defense and special teams.
Mike Jenkins has been a stud at CB this year, which makes me think that Rivers will attack Terence Newman or our slot guy, Orlando Scandrick. Because the defense was burned for big gains last week, they may ask the CBs to play more man-to-man. A mix of Scandrick and SS Gerald Sensabaugh will follow Gates around, and as usual, Wade will bring some pressure in various ways with his front seven.
Anthony Spencer is a guy who has been stepping up in the pass-rushing department, but he looked to be one of the guys responsible for Brandon Jacobs’ long catch-and-run last week. Perhaps they’ll keep him in to rush more and out of coverage.
On offense, OC Jason Garrett will probably try early on to establish the run. He will also use Witten early to get a feel for your coverages. Romo has been hot though, so expect to see him throwing alot.
I have to say that I see the Cowboys playing up to the level of the Chargers. Considering that we’re looking at New Orleans, the always tough Redskins, and the Eagles to finish the season, the team is in that “must win” mode every week.

Witten
Will probably have a big game since we really haven’t figured out the TE coverage yet. We are better than we were last year, but it is still a weakness.
Many teams have tried to establish the run against us. And almost all of them have been successful. Yet for some reason, they all seem to abandon it later in the game. I think this is due to our offense putting up points and this puts pressure on our opponent’s offense to match us, so they pass more and abandon their successfull running game. We’ll see if this game follows the same script.
I think our pass defense (from rushing to coverage) is a strength (aside from the TE issue) and if we can trick you guys into abandoning your run game and get into a shootout, I think we have an excelent chance to win.
by Stephen (shaynes41) on Dec 10, 2009 9:40 AM PST up reply actions
I think you have a more than excellent chance of getting us into a shootout.
If you guys can contain our runs outside, then that should effectively prevent big plays there. The Giants did that to force the run inside and it worked well.
If one of our RBs gets going—especially Felix Jones—it could change the dynamic of the game.

Almost any fantasy site worth their salt
Recommends starting the RB facing the Chargers. Just look at Jamal Charles’ numbers against the Chargers 2 weeks ago. And they had to abandon using him around the end of the 3rd quarter.

Moreso power guys, but speed guys do fine as well. Felix will have some nice runs outside, Marion will look like a beast inside.

Did you know that despite our terrible run defense, the Chargers have only allowed one RB to get over 100 yards rushing?

They make them work for it, ey?
You will see the coaches rotate our 3 backs in quite often.
Barber will start. Felix usually starts the second half, and gets mixed in from the 2nd or 3rd offensive series of the game. Choice is our WildCat QB and 3rd-down guy.

The Chargers' run defense has three saving graces
but otherwise isn’t very good.
1) They’re not bad at forcing negative plays. Their real problem is that they give up too many 5-10 yard gains and set up too many short-yardage situations.
2) They’re very good at stopping long runs, but how much of that is injured Eric Weddle is hard to say. Josh Cribbs and Jamaal Charles ate us alive, but both of those guys are standout players on bad offenses.
3) The SD passing offense is just unreal, so it’s not uncommon that opponents end up in a hole and have to mix in more passes in the second half despite the fact that our pass defense is quite solid.

The Chargers defense has actually been above average defending tight ends this year and rank 10th overall against them.

But our second TE, Martellus Bennett, will probably be out this week with a concussion.

BTW, a mystery for the Cowboys this season is why they have struggled against 34 defenses when they practice against it everyday.
Just FanShotted this over at BTB, but here’s the summary:
From DC.com’s Josh Ellis:
They only scored 10 in a loss to Denver in Week 4, followed by 26 points (20 in regulation) against Kansas City the next week, in a game it took well into the third quarter before the offense got on the board. Against Green Bay on Nov. 15, the Cowboys had one of their worst offensive outings in recent memory, scoring only seven points at the very end.

what happens when you lose?
I don’t follow the Cowboys closely, but it always seems like you guys should be doing better than you are, not that 8-4 is bad. Romo puts up great numbers, you good RB’s, stellar TE (arguably the best), good wideouts, a D that has a tough reputation. And I like Wade. So, how do you lose, or, as with Washington, almost lose?
I heard a Cowboys writer on Hacksaw's show yesterday
Saying he figured the Cowboys would make it to the playoffs in okay shape if they win 2 of their next 4 games. Of course, those aren’t gimmes against the Chargers, Saints, Redskins and Eagles and there are some in the Cowboy’s fanbase that starts calling for heads after every Cowboy’s loss. But, 10-6 doesn’t seem to bad to me given who they have to go through to get it. If I was a Cowboys fan though that would be the break even point and I’d want to see 11-5 or 12-4 in order to like my team’s playoff chances, both of which probably mean beating the Chargers, so I could see why a loss on Sunday would be tough to take.
Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.
Every single loss brings up all kinds of chicken little-type hype.
Fire Wade, fire Garrett, cut the kicker, bench Roy…if a guy has a bad game, he can easily be the goat of the week, maybe the season, even the franchise.
I’ve been guilty of it sometimes, too but we can’t expect our teams to win every game. Look at what the ’Skins did to the Saints last week, or how the Raiders beat the Eagles.

I think it's more
“We want the guy out because we’ve always hated him and we don’t want to risk him earning his job back” than anyone thinking that a midseason coaching change will help. And for those that didn’t always hate him, it seems like better punishment for failures to fire midseason than to wait until the offseason.

As a self-proclaimed anti-Norvist, I would have definitely said yes last year, and probably at the beginning of this season. Teams have been able to take out one facet of our offense to make it one-dimensional.
In the beginning of the year, defenses were bracketing Witten. Then, when Miles Austin busted out, they rolled coverages towards him to eliminate the big play.
The Cowboys’ other WRs have been inconsistent, in the fact that they are doing little to help take coverage off of Romo’s top two guys. Recently, Roy Williams has been finding some soft spots in the end zone and he’s looked pretty good on the screen or two they throw to him per game.
The running game has not been much help since the beginning of the season. As one of our writers has pointed out, they are big but not the kind of big that blows DL straight back. They’re more agile-big, if that makes sense.
The D, on the other hand, is usually pretty solid.

I like to ask this
Who are some players on the Cowboys that Chargers fans may not be familiar that are having good seasons?
Good question.
Some of the guys I touched upon above: CB Mike Jenkins, OLB Anthony Spencer, WR Miles Austin, though you’ve probably heard of him.
Our FA guys are doing well. Keith Brooking has proven to be a beast on defense and is a valuable team leader. He and NT Jay Ratliff, along with Spencer and SS Gerald Sensabaugh have helped to shutdown have all been dominant at times. 4th-round pick OLB Victor Bulter comes in for pass rush situations and can get to the QB.
On offense, the weapons kind of shift. Fans adore UDFA WR Kevin Ogletree, but he hasn’t been used much recently. TE Martellus Bennett may miss this game with a concussion, so 6th-round pick John Phillips will take his place. He’s been a good blocker, so it will be interesting to see if he contributes to the passing game.
Rookie kickoff specialist, David Buehler, is our Chuck Norris-type guy. He outbenched several Olinemen at the combine and also works on the punt coverage teams. In training camp, he beat one of the DBs (now waived) in a foot race. Also, P Mat McBriar has been awesome in pinning PRs back inside their 20.

One game, he got two sacks in a row to (vs CAR) to help seal the game.
In Philly, he tripped up McNabb before he could scramble for a first down on their last drive.
Only knock on Butler is he’s from Oregon St…I kid, of course…well, sort of.

Was cruising the Cowboys board
And was surprised to think people think our secondary is suspect. Why do you think this is? Ask most people here and Im sure they’d tell you are secondary is well above avg. We rank 8th, 9th, and 2nd in passing yards/per game, yards/per pass, and 20plus receptions.
The weakest part of the defense clearly is the Dline, which has been called the gum and tape crew.

I don't get that either, considering many guys were wanting them to draft Jammer and Cason in their respective drafts.
How is your SS? Gregory, right? The Cowboys have exploited teams with big plays when they don’t keep their safeties back.

The Chargers will employ 3 safeties
They currently have a rotation at one safety spot with Kevin Ellison and Paul Oliver. Ellison is practically the size of a LB and is used on running downs as the eighth man in the box. Oliver is a former college CB who we haven’t really seen get exposed since he started playing that spot. I prefer to think that its because he’s do a pretty good job out there. Gregory will man the other safety spot, which is normally filled by Eric Weddle. Gregory gets exposed a lot in coverage, especially zones. He will have a tough time with Witten.
Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.
It will be interesting to see whether Dallas uses Austin or Witten as a decoy.
Witten has, up until recently, been held back by defenses. It’s just too tough to ignore Austin to cover JWitt. Austin is really tough to tackle, so Romo may look his way more if that is a weakness of SD.

The Chargers secondary gives up less big plays than any team in the league, I think. I don’t know exactly why that is, but outside of two blown coverage plays in week 1 and week 2 (where the WR ended up uncovered downfield) nobody ever gets the Chargers for a long pass.

Dallas doesn't do much deep passing, if at all.
I don’t remember the last time Romo tossed a 40-50 yard bomb. Most of their big plays come via YAC. Felix is fast and Austin, JWitt, and Barber are all tough to bring down.

Darren Sproles on both offense and ST.
On defense, I would have to say Cromartie. Romo can be deadly in his accuracy, but he squeezes throws in to really tight windows at times. He could easily have more picks this year that defenders simply dropped. Plus, Cromartie can take it the distance at any time.

They will use it once or twice early in their first few series, just to get a gauge on how susceptible the D is up to it.
They have yet to throw from it, though.
BTW, they call it the Razorback even tho Tashard Choice rather than Felix Jones (ARK alum) is utilized more in it.
They also have some formation where Miles Austin lines up in the backfield. It was effective last week, and helped Roy get open for a score.

I liked the pass they had him thrown
Normally on the lateral to the a passing WR the guy has to throw it down the field to a sometimes open man (and then gets in trouble when he’s not open). The Chargers seem to like to have the ball thrown to Gates while the WRs (Jackson and/or Floyd) run down the field as decoys.

Our defense consisted of mostly backups who played a deep zone on the first drive
They didn’t score the rest of the game until the very end when the defense did the same thing.
We pretty much let them score because we knew we had won the game and we wanted to rest our players and not risk anymore injuries.

Yup, UO '01!
How can you not be worried about Romo?
On defense, Dallas is weakest at…hmm, I would say at giving up 3rd-down plays. Sometimes, the CBs (Scandrick and Newman) can be beat, but what CB doesn’t get beat. Other than maybe Aaron Rogers, though, this unit has yet to see the caliber of QB that Rivers is. With him and Breesy coming up, they’ve got to buckle down.
As far as HC goes, a lot of Cowboys’ fans like to fantasize about the future instead of living in the present. Here in San Antonio, after they lost to Denver all the talk radio guys were all about Bill Cowher coming in. Now, it’s all about Shanahan. It’s all talk. Really, who’s going to run the defense if Wade left? Would they bring in a guy like Mike Nolan as HC? They certainly can’t go back to a 4-3. And then, what would happen to Jason Garrett.
Those who like the tough guyness of Parcells seem to think Coach Phillips is too laid back.

To Romo's credit, he's got his head on straight.
He’s really focused and you can see it in his competitiveness. He’s learned to just take a sack to protect the ball instead of potentially fumbling. He also has no problem with throwing it away anymore.
This offense has looked stagnant at times, and he’s definitely helped them pick up the tempo.

Witten
Sunday’s game features two of the three best TEs in the NFL today in Gates and Witten. As we’ve seen in recent weeks with the Chargers, teams are focusing on taking Vincent Jackson out of the game, which lets Rivers more time than not, find Gates over the middle. So my question is, if you can take one of San Diego’s big two weapons out of the game, who would you pick? Gates or Vincent Jackson?
Gates.
The dude’s a monster…he’s like 3rd in the league in YAC. He’s also helped me to 1st in my FF league—thanks!
My hope is that Jenkins, our most physical CB, can take on big ol’ Jackson. Some combo of SS Sensabaugh, slot-CB Scandrick, and nickel LB Bobby Carpenter will he shadowing Gates.
Throughout the season, the Cowboys have been much better in preventing the big play rather than preventing 3rd-down pickups. That’s been a weakness. It seems like teams can have 3rd-and-17 and still complete passes that make 1sts.

He has not taken one snap this year.
We call him Busted Davis— after a modestly productive rookie year as the slot reciever, he’s been shuffled to the back and completely unable to stay healthy. We anticipate that he’ll climb up the depth chart next season, especially if Floyd walks in free agency.

Floyd will be a UFA
Jackson will be an RFA assuming that no new CBA gets completed. With Floyd being elevated to starter and there being no cap next year he’s probably as good as gone to some team willing to fork out some nice dough for him to start for them (look at Nate Washington last year and he wasn’t even a starter for the Steelers). I’m betting the Chargers would match any offer made to Jackson. I’m cool with Jackson, Naanee and Davis/Byrd as our top 3 WRs next year.

I'm sure Aaron won't mind if I give a shot at this one
We didn’t have a first day pick that year as we traded away our first for Roy and moved back into the third round from the second.
Third rounders to 7th rounders are normally not first year starters, plus all our starting players were locked in from day one. So there was not an opportunity for any of our draftees to crack the starting lineup.
I’ll give you a break down of our draft:
3a. ILBJason Williams – Raw player from a small program with incredible physical talent. He came on strong towards the end of training camp and probably will be starting after Brooking leaves.
3b. OT/OG Robert Brewster – tore pectoral muscle right before Training camp started and is essentially on IR. We’ll see with him.
4a. QB Stephen McGee – Has some intriguing physical tools and definitely has a NFL arm, but he is really cautious and was given the nickname “checkdown” McGee in TC. His job right now is to sit and learn from Kitna and Romo as the third QB.
4b. OLB Victor Butler – On draft day he was seen as a reach, but now he has turned out to be one of our better picks. He is a good pass rusher, and every now and then he’ll come in to give Spencer or Ware a breather.
4c. OLB Brandon Williams – He too got injured during TC and was put on IR. He is probably a more developed than Butler, but doesn’t have Butler’s pass rush skills or potential.
5a. Safety Deangelo Smith – He was cut and someone picked him up.
5b. Safety Michael Hamlin – Probably are best value pick of this draft. He had a strong training camp and looks to be starting material two or so years down the road.
5c. K/ST David Buehler – A lot of people were initially upset with this pick, but ironically he has become sort of a fan favorite. He is a kick off specialist, but is athletic and built like a linebacker, so he is also used to cover punts.
6a. ILB Stephen Hodge – Had knee issues in TC and was put on IR. Although from what was seen of him he appears to be a good coverage linebacker.
6b. TE John Phillips – is an OK receiver, but is a very good blocker and has earned playing time based on that.
7a. CB Mike Mickens – had a pretty poor training camp, though he showed flashes at times. Unfortunately Tampa picked him off our practice squad.
7b. WR Manny Johnson – Didn’t really stand out in any way, and is currently on the practice squad.
UDFA. WR Kevin Ogletree – fast athletic receiver who runs good routes and can get YAC. Came in undrafted, earned his way onto the 53 man roster, and eventually earned some playing time. He might be a steal, and given our history with undrafted free agents it wouldn’t surprise me if he became a starter a few years down the road.

Superb...thanks, quincyyyyy!
Saved me some carpal!
We’ve all been chomping at the bit to see Jason Williams, but he’s developmental.
Hamlin is an injury away from getting on the defensive unit.
Buehler can’t beat us all in an arm-wrestling match.
Phillips could see a ton of snaps this week with Marty out.
Ogletree simply needs to play more. They’ve got some special screenplays reserved for him.

Great, now he’s gonna hunt me down.

You think Aaron is kidding
but if you check out Buehler’s combine stats he outperformed Rey Maualuga.
He is probably the scariest kick off specialist ever.
Does he get touchbacks often
Our place kicker is very accurate on field goals but rarely seems to kick the football inside the 5 on kickoffs.
Also doesnt it seem like a stupid idea for Romo to be holding for field goals?
Do you guys carry a guy solely for kickoffs, punts, long snapping, and field goals respectively?
I think he leads the league in touchbacks
or at least in the top 5
Romo is actually a really good holder, the seahawks crew handed us a slippery K ball (as it rained earlier that day) and well you know the rest.
As to your last question, yes, but usually they are all really good at their respective responsibilities. Unfortunately Folk is having a down year. They say it is because McBriar doesn’t know how to hold properly. We shall see.
Buehler also has other roles on special teams.
He covers punts and is in on the FG block unit. He played FB in JC, and LB and S in a pinch.
He covers his own kicks as well.

Honestly, not too much.
Bennett is a cool cat and all, but he’s not been the threat in the passing game that he looked to be in camp and preseason. Grant it, they’ve been working his blocking skills in the 2TE set, but he’s been catching a few as of late.
His backup, rookie John Phillips, has played more snaps this year than expected. Often, he lines up as a FB and is a physical blocker. He’s been a project of the TE coach, John Garrett, who also coached him at Virginia.
While they lose Bennett’s athleticism this week, it hasn’t been a weapon they’ve depended on. He dropped a big 3rd-down grab last week that drew the ire of fans.
At times this season, Hamlin has seemed non-existent. This could be because they’ve used him more as a true centerfielder to help double-up on #1WRs, or simply because he just isn’t a playmaker.
His backup, Alan Ball, bounces between CB and FS in a pinch. He’s 188lbs and looks thin, but he’s brought the wood at times. Still, I feel that Hamlin is a bit better in run support, while Ball is the better cover guy.

He wasn't close, but he did make the practice squad.
At camp, he was a fan favorite. People would applaud just when he caught a ball.
Personally, I was disappointed that he won the competition rather than Andrew Hawkins. Although Holley is 6-3, 215 pounds compared to the 5-foot-8, 165-pound Hawkins, I felt that the little guy had more to offer the team as a kickoff and punt returner. He is also 3 years younger than Holley, so he had more time to develop as a WR. Both performed well on the show, but Hawkins blew away expectations, IMO.
Now, Dallas just has another big WR deep, deep down on the depth chart. My wish to get a shifty little Wes Welker-type weapon will have to wait.

I agree with you on Hawkins.
He looked to me like a Wes Welker type player that could really benefit the current team, including KR/PR.
Anyone looking at the coaching matchups this week?
Does Wade Phillips have an offensive dvantage being the old Chargers DC?
Or do the Chargers have a advantage playing against their old defense?
I would think the Chargers players would know the Phillips D, better than Wade can know what the old players can do in Norv’s system. Rivers was a first year starter in Wade’s last year. VJ was a shell of his current self. It was McNeill’s rookie year. Naanee wasn’t year. Floyd was just starting to find his way. The running game was good back then and LoNeal was still here. 6 different starters and 2 guys still starting who had started for 1 season and 1 guy that’s gone from MVP to second rate. How familiar could he be?
I heard Gates on the radio this morning talking about what Phillips liked to do to TEs when he was here. I’d like to think the Charger’s O has the advantage.

Also, our OC Jason Garrett played under Norv Turner back in the day.
That’s probably where he learned much of his vertical passing attack.

He was only there for 1 of Turner's years in Dallas
But I’m sure he had to study plenty of game tape of the Redskins since he probably had to pretend to be their QB in practice plenty.

Like Norv, his playbook is reminiscent of Air Coryell's.

Reminiscent
But, like Norv’s, quite different.

You make some good points, but I’m thinking more along scheme rather than pure player ability. Of course Jackson is a better receiver now, than when Wade was here, but as said so often, Cam Cameron was still using a form of Norv’s current offense, so I just wonder how familiar the plays might still be.
I don't buy the Norv-Cam thing
That may have been true in the first year where the offenses were similar, but now that Norv has implemented the whole thing and continued to develop there is no way they share a lot of similarities. Especially now that the power running game is no where near what it was when Cam was here. That has to change the types of plays that are installed and called on Sunday. On top of that, its not like Phillips was here dissecting the Cameron’s offense so he could beat in practice. He was gameplanning his own stuff for our opponents. The only familiarity is going to come from knowing the players and how they run routes, get off blocks, pass protect, run protect, etc and there’s not many of the same guys left and the ones that are different than when he was here.

Thanks for being great hosts, Chargers fans.
Cheers on a good game, and best of luck the rest of the way! Who knows? Maybe we’ll meet again to end the season.
