Browns fan answers your questions
Visiting from SBN's Cleveland Browns site: Dawgs By Nature. You all probably aren't too worried about the Cleveland Browns this week. What with the 1-9 record, the coach dealing with constant distractions and injuries gutting our already suspect defense, you may think this is a glorified bye week. But if you do have any questions about the Browns, list them here and I'll do my best to answer from a die-hard Browns fan's perspective.
Go Browns!

Do you think Brady Quinn is the answer or do you hope to draft another QB?

There are opinions all over the board on this issue.
Some think we haven’t seen nearly enough for Quinn to make a decision. He has played less than 10 games across 3 different seasons and at least 2 different systems. He has been yanked in and out of the starting lineup and dealt with an injury for the last 2 years. And he’ll be on his 4th coordinator in 4 years next season.
On the other hand, he has digressed in so many ways since leading Notre Dame. He is uncomfortable in the pocket, doesn’t always trust his arm and goes down too easy. He couldn’t beat out Derek freaking Anderson until the end of the preseason and even then DA was the “guy who gave us the best chance to win” by week 4. He lost the job to Derek Anderson. That’s bad.
I’ve said since week one this year that our 2010 starting QB is not on our roster right now. I don’t think we want to draft a QB in the top 5 of the draft. But if someone is there at the top of round 2 or 3, I’d be ok with that. Hopefully Quinn can hold us over until that player is ready, otherwise, we are looking for a vet in FA or trade.

I’m a big Brady Quinn fan. I think if he could get behind a line he trusts he’d be really, really good.

Part of that is on him though. The left side of the line from LT to C is really really good. The right side is a bit patch work, but I’m so disappointed in his inability to rise above any adversity this season.
I’m not ready to quit on him. But he has gone backwards this season.

I was about to say that
What I’ve seen, with him, is that when his receivers are as better than the corners and his line is better than the pass rush, he has a strong, accurate arm and makes good decisions. That’s just very, very rare. Last year, he targeted Winslow a lot because Winslow is typically better than the LB or Safety that’s defending him. This year, every receiver he has is overmatched.

And don’t forget the drops.
But it isn’t that they are over matched always. He has missed wide open receivers, in the pocket, with time.
And the most frustrating thing of all is the countless times where he and his receiver have not read the defense the same.

I wanted him in that draft too
Each of the last three drafts, I’ve looked through the draft preview magazines and picked out the biggest DTs listed (I’m looking for 6’3"+, 325+) and hoped and prayed to hear one of their names in the late rounds to the Bolts – just find me a monster for depth behind Jamal. Hasn’t happened yet, but Rubin was one that fit that bill.

A 325-lb DE with a 5-second 40 time?
Better be ready to see all running plays going Castillo’s way; he has injury problems as-is. And we still need a nose tackle. I think what’s really going on is that we thought we had Williams and Bingham, and wanted to get VM on the field somehow. Unsurprisingly, VM failed to show himself to be NFL ready, so we had to get Scott and Boone to fill in the nose rotation. So now VM is an end, ‘cause that’s what we need today.
If VM can play NT, we should try to groom him as an NT and spend a pick on insurance or on a DE/DT (much easier to find). If not, never mind, and we need to be ready use two draft picks (yuck), to get the guy we want and an insurance policy. It also depends on how it goes with JW. If he doesn’t retire they might be tempted to just draft one guy on the first day.

It is a large part of the fabric of Cleveland generally, and definitely our sports culture. We are extremely passionate, especially towards the Browns, and have had our heart ripped out in every way imaginable. I don’t think it is frustrating when the national media mentions our championship drought. It is a weird sense of pride. But that’s what we got.

He has his defenders.
There are a few things we all agree on though:
- He was hired too quickly and in a very odd way.
- He handled the Kokinis situation oddly, though it isn’t clear what happened.
- He has had so many odd and worrying off the field issues, you wonder if the distractions have consumed him.
That said, many fans are supportive of what he has done on a personnel side. We needed to get rid of Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow and I really like his draft. Would you want to be paying Mark Sanchez all that money?
All that said 1-10 is unacceptable. His offensive coordinator looks like a atrocious hire. His clock and game management has been questionable, at best. The media has been unfair to him, but at 1-10, it doesn’t really matter.

But he is a head case who can catch. A quick looks says you are getting almost no receiving yards from your tight ends now. Maybe I’m biased because I always liked his father, but it seems like he was a good option even with all the drama. A second rounder isn’t bad, especially from Tampa, but a bird in the hand and all that…

But it wasn’t just that he was a head case. The biggest problem was his health.
He has the best hands I have ever seen on a football player. And he is one of the toughest guys, playing games with severely separated shoulders, etc.
He is only 26, but his body is probably about 36. That knee is really a ticking time bomb. While he hasn’t missed a game yet this year, he is on the injury list most weeks with that knee. Browns fans are mostly happy they didn’t give him a big contract extension. (6 years! over $20M guaranteed!)

What are some players on the Browns that have played well that Charger fans may not be familiar with?
by sdpads24 on Dec 1, 2009 12:26 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Josh Cribbs. Maybe you have heard of him. Maybe you think he is a good player. But he is a great player. He is the best kick and punt returner in the league, he is an all pro caliber special team gunner, and he contributes on offense with gadget plays, as a wild cat QB, and as a WR.
Joe Thomas. Top 3 LT in the NFL.
Alex Mack. Rookie Center. Eats 340 pound DTs for lunch.
Eric Wright. CB- Not quite a shut down corner, but has a nose for the ball and teams rarely test him.
David Bowens- Savior of a linebacking corps that has been destroyed by injuries. Plays inside and outside and likes to rush the QB.

Speaking of Mack...
will he be starting at center, or does that job belong to Hank Fraley?
Also, how’s the pass rush on the left side of your defense (LOLB and LE)? They’ll be matched up against our right side— a rookie guard and either a 2nd-year tackle who started his first game last week, or Jon Runyan.

Mack is the starting center. He won that job from Fraley in the preseason and hasn’t really looked back. Fraley sees some time at RG and as an extra FB/TE/Tackle eligible. Not just in short yardage situations.
As far as our pass rushers, it really depends on the injury to Kameron Wimbley. If he is ok, he’ll be on one side and is pretty good (though quiet lately). Jason Trusnik will be on other, and probably against your right side most of the time. This is his first season as a starting LB. He has looked good since coming over in the Edwards trade. Rob Ryan mixes up the blitzes quite a bit. Also, an addition from the middle of last week- Matt Roth will see time at OLB. He had a sack last week against the Bengals, just 4 days after being added to the roster.

How has Wimbley looked? I know Browns fans were pretty high on him in the offseason.
He might have saved his career this year thanks to Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan’s more aggressive scheme. Under Romeo Crennel, Wimbley had exactly one move- a speed rush. And he came from the same spot on the field every down he was in. On pure talent he got 11 sacks as a rookie, but then just 9 in the next two seasons combined. He had 4 in the first 5 weeks of the season, but has slowed recently because of minor injuries and less talent around him (more injuries). He now has 5.5 sacks on the season. He did leave the game last week with a bum knee and ee said they needed to do more tests today to see how serious the injury was. If he is gone, we are looking at 3 of 4 starting LBs from the start of the season out injured. This from the weakest position on the team coming into the season. 2 of the starting LBs against San Diego will likely have been mid season pickups off the waiver wire and practice squads.
Are you okay with Davis as the starting RB next year? It sounds like Lewis is done (retiring).
I despise Lewis. I want him gone now. I like what I saw from Davis before he got hurt, and some fans are big supporters of Jerome Harrison, thinking he can play a Darren Sproles style if he got more touches. But he can’t seem to get on the field because of injury or because he can’t pass protect worth a crap. I’d like a 2nd or 3rd round pick on a RB. Davis and Harrison isn’t enough and I’m a big fan of 2 or 3 talented backs.
What single player/event has caused the most problems for the Browns over the past 3-4 years? It has to be LeCharles Bentley, right?
Interesting question. Bentley was a huge disappointment. But its tough to say him going down on his first play of camp as a Brown and never playing again has caused the MOST problems for the Browns. If for no other reason, the Browns mitigated that situation well by finding Hank Fraley immediately, who helped anchor a very good line during the Browns 10-6 2007 season. I’d say Winslow’s motorcycle accident was worse. He was never the same, and his knee became a major liability. It made trading him a necessity. Instead of the best TE in the league as our number 1 playmaker for the next 10 seasons, we had a frustrated guy who was betrayed by his body and staph infections. That we got a 2nd and a 5th for him was a minor miracle. Bottom line, I don’t know if you can pick just one player or event. It has been that no player or coach or front office guy has been able to raise above this crap. It was systematic. That’s why Romeo and Savage had to go. And why hopefully Lerner can get Mike Holmgren or someone like him in a front office Parcells/football czar role.
Any chance Brodney Pool plays against San Diego?
I hope not. Pool has had several serious concussions in the past. Word is he is considering quitting football all together. And that is probably the right decision. He needs to be thinking of his long term health. It would be tragic, because I always thought he had potential and heart.

See, I think the cap hit the Browns took with Bentley (and Stallworth now too) has ruined any chance of them being a player in free agency. With bad teams, it starts by putting in veterans that know how to win and can raise above the crap (see: Orton, Buckhalter, Dawkins in Denver) and then having them there to work with the young talent. At this point, the only thing that’s bringing those guys to Cleveland is money and it seems like far too much of it is and has been tied up in players that are not on the field.
I agree with the Winslow assessment though. That motorcycle thing was a mess.
I think the Browns should be looking at Shanahan more than anybody else, honestly.

The Browns have stayed below cap and have an owner willing to spend. Savage was a little loose with cash, but cap space hasn’t really stopped us from doing anything the last 4-5 years. And the cap is so high these days that most teams don’t really think of it as much of an issue as it used to be.

No probelm.
Mack- has been great. After struggling with the snap exchange early, he has settled down, is finishing plays, plays with a mean streak, and should be the center of our line for the foreseeable future.
Brian Robiskie, WR- major disappointment for a second rounder who was touted as NFL ready. Can’t get on the field and has been passed by practice squad players and kick returners on the depth chart.
Massaquoi, WR- shown flashes of dominance both as a #2 behind Edwards and as a #1. Probably more of a #2 WR going forward. Really struggles with reading blitzes and when to break off his routes. Not the surest hands in the world, but not bad.
Veikune, LB- odd pick, moving a DE to ILB. Pretty much has only seen the field on special teams. This is a long term project. Disappointing, only because it was a second rounder.
Kaluka Maiava, LB- starting because of injuries. Looks a little small, but has good instincts. Still is going to get burned in coverage, but once the game slows down for him and he is used to playing in the NFL, not the Pac10, he has potential.
Coye Francies, CB- sleeper at the time, but also can’t get on the field. And with Hank Poteat seeing time, this is disappointing, but a late pick, so the jury is still out.
James Davis, RB- liked what little we saw, hurt in practice, now on IR.
Chris Jennings, RB- UDFA, shown some promise, but still raw and not sure he is big or fast enough. Now our #2 RB.

Easy. Philip Rivers. We need a franchise QB, and I am very high on Rivers.
Who would the Chargers want on the Browns? I don’t know enough about the Chargers personnel. Cribbs to add some spice to your offense and a dynamic kick returner? Joe Thomas and Shaun Rogers (if healthy) would be starters on any team.

I know you like that Mack Pick
But to drop way down into the first round to draft a center seems strange to me. And then to take a couple receivers on the first day is also weird considering position value.
Now thats just my take, I personally would only take an OT, CB, QB, LB or a edge rusher in the first round.
by AirNorval on Dec 1, 2009 8:58 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I think you are underrating a top end C. And it had worked with Mangini before- Nick Mangold in New York.
Also the drop way down made so much sense. As the guys at WFNY said:
Think of it this way: with the #5 pick, the Browns drafted Alex Mack, Mohamed Massaquoi, Coye Francies, James Davis, Abram Elam, Kenyon Coleman, and Brett Ratliff, and will pay all of them combined probably the same or even LESS than Mark Sanchez will get from New York. That’s value, no matter how you slice it.

The team has been absolutely awful on offense this year. Besides the explosion against Detroit, the passing game has been historically bad. Part of it was the QB play. Some was on the right side of the offensive line. Some was on the hands and routes of the WRs. Some was on the offensive coordinator. There was plenty of suck to blame. But the coordinator gets the majority of the blame from me.
I don’t think “studs” is the right word to describe the ceiling of Massaquoi or Davis. Massaquoi seems perfect as a #2 WR. And if he can run a little cleaner routes and learn to read when to break off his routes a little better, he’d be right there. He was rushed into PT because of the Edwards trade, but it will help his development in the future.
At RB, I think NFL teams are getting away from searching for feature backs (unless you have a Peterson or a Tomlinson, circa 2006). You need 2 or 3 productive RBs for a good running attack. (see Giants, Saints, Panthers). Davis can be one part of this equation. Because of this, I wouldn’t mind taking a RB in the draft next year- we do have 11 picks.

Harbaugh was out there for the others.
There were a lot of really close games, including a Buffalo game where we knocked out their starter Rob Johnson only to have Flutie beat us in OT.
This was post labrum repair for Leaf, so he wasn’t the same thrower at that point. I think he also hurt his finger that season, which was the injury that basically put the nail in the coffin for his NFL career.

DVOA and DYAR are great stats
But in the end they are still just stats. http://www.aaronschatz.com/stats/wr
If you look at the rankings for recievers this year you’ll see Austin Collie, Devry Henderson and Kevin Walter rated above Andre Johnson. Does this mean they are better recievers then Andre? Not even close.
I have a LT doll... yeah I'm a little embarassed.
by catch22b on Dec 2, 2009 6:47 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
So what you're saying
is that those receivers are outproducing Johnson and are having better years than Johnson, but because of some subjective factor you think Johnson is better. That’s fine, but we need to be clear about it. Wayne, Jackson, and Rice are, so far, the highest producing receivers in football. You may like Fitzgerald or Johnson or Moss more than them, but they just aren’t producing as much this season.
What exactly about Johnson or Fitzgerald do you like? Their physicality, their route-running, their hands, their willingness to fight for the ball? Because Jackson does all those things too. Maybe you can argue that they’ve been producing at a high level longer than Jackson, which is true, but it doesn’t change anything about who is a better receiver right now, this year.
"I aim to misbehave." - Mal Reynolds
by Zach (maestro876) on Dec 2, 2009 8:04 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Your mostly right. But that’s not to say the stats, even DVOA and DYAR, are perfect. They rely heavily on things like catch rate, which can penalize a receiver for having an inaccurate QB that targets him a lot.

But are you calling Matt Schaub and Kurt Warner inaccurate? Because if you aren’t, then that point doesn’t have any relevance in this discussion.
My biggest problem here is that we are using 2009 numbers exclusively, when some of these WRs (cough, cough… Wayne… cough) have established a level of production over a number of years.

Are they?
The difference is Andre still draws a double team every down, tilting the defense his way and opening things up for the rest of the team. the other 3 will nearly always see single coverage every down due to other players on his team so they may have better production in certain situations but that doesn’t say they are having a better season or are better recievers.

dude, stats are a tool
Subjective Human judgment is the final word.
Andre Johnson is awesome. VJ is great. Steve Smith is having a shitty year but he’s still better then most receivers.
The idea that VJ the best because of some stats, well only if stats are the measuring stick. IF the measuring stick is who is the most valuable to his team then others beat VJ. Including Andre Johnson, he’s the only elite player on that offense. They win 3 games a year more because of him.

In a career-to-date context? Nah. Above-average #1 WR.
In a future potential context? Top 3. A young guy, getting better every year!
Right this minute? There’s no one WR in the league who’s really lighting it up to the point where he’s absolutely dominant. Rather, this season seems to have a band of what, seven or eight guys who all look really good, and Jackson is one of them.
Underrated? Not really. Great player, gets lots of respect, hasn’t earned anything, may benefit from having a great QB, but may suffer from SD’s excess of weaponry.

cool stuff
As mentioned by others, great analysis and insight into the Browns and admire your passion for your team. Not that it is something we can really turn off very well, but still admirable.
Side point: I get annoyed with Big Media accolades for the diehard Cubs, Boston, NY, etc fans. Those markets have never had to persevere through prolonged droughts like other cities. The top contenders in the misery index: Cleveland, Seattle and SD. The Padres and the Bolts have decent first decade of this century, but still no championships. And mostly misery prior to that.
Seattle had the Sonics in 1975. Cleveland was the Indians in 1944? That is a lot of patience. The only silver lining for Cleveland might be Ohio State football, but not sure how passionnately they are followed there.
So, always pulling for Cleveland, just not this Sunday.

so no superbowl championships
SD won the AFL, similar to the Browns winning the NFL, pre-merger. The SD Sockers won some soccer league like 15 years ago. SDSU is not much of program to expect much from. The Clippers (thankfully) bolted a long time ago, but left a trail of ineptitude while they were here. So, as a SD fan, you got everything riding on the Padres and Chargers.
The Padres, like the Tribe, have huge salary disparity to overcome. So, perhaps they will come back, but I don’t expect many small market WS winners until they fix payroll issue in baseball. So…it is the Bolts. I am 43, and really wonder if I will see a SD championship in my lifetime.
Not complaining, but just want to acknowledge that I admire other small market, drought-ridden fans. That is a sign of true passion and commitment.

The Browns were unquestionably the best professional football team in 50, 54, and 55. They were NFL Champs and there wasn’t another league. I don’t discount even the 64 championship just because it was before the merger, and before the corny title of “Super Bowl” for the title game.
SD’s AFL title would be on par with the Browns 4 AAFC titles from 46-49. The champs of the second best league.
And I’m also not counting the professional indoor soccer dynasty of the 90’s: as the Cleveland Crunch and their 3 titles.
