Tomlinson has been talking about how he wants to play five more years. But he knows that might not happen and his career is closer to its sunset than its sunrise.

"I've been through a lot in my career; it's hard work," he said softly as he stood alone in the locker room an hour after yesterday's 21-20 win over the Giants. "I don't want to say I'm coming to the end. But I don't know if I'll ever be in this stadium again. You cherish certain moments. That's one I'll remember forever."

Nice one LT.

I couldn’t have been more surprised seeing LT hug Turner on the field, after Rivers and Jackson connected for the final score.

Winning cures everything. I imagine so long as they keep winning, LT will keep being happy even if he’s not getting the ball very much.

We're boned.

If this team makes the playoffs

I think a lot of people are going to look back at this game, and that hug, and say “That’s when everyone got on board with Norv again.”

I hope someone hugged Ron Rivera.

I agree

Norv had a few questionable play calls (what’s new?), but getting the W on the road against the Giants is HUGE. Maybe once Hardwick gets back; the O-line might just open some holes for LT. Loved the Giants fans with the ‘get your own nickname’ themed sign in the stands…all the while it was VJ that they should’ve been worried about…

I was pleasantly surprised with Rivera.

He’s actually dialed up the blitzes the last few weeks. I like how he’s forcing the safeties to be aggressive by blitzing them on run and passing downs.

What I’d like to see is some new wrinkles next week against the Eagles. Perhaps bring fewer safety blitzes, but fake it a bunch to throw off their protection and McNabb’s reads, and bring pressure from another angle.

We're boned.

Hmmmm

This defense has done a great job of preventing the big play. I think if they play that way against the Eagles, forcing Philly to be patient with the run and short passes, they’ll do just fine.

And from what I recall

one of the reasons they crapped the bed against Oakland was because of o-line injuries.

It's true

Jason Peters is their only decent LT. He went out against Oakland and Richard Seymour destroyed his backup.

I’ve been reading Bleeding Green Nation, and apparently Peters went out with an injury last night and Ware started getting major heat on McNabb until Peters came back in. If he doesn’t play this game, Merriman will be in good shape.

From twitter

With 5 sacks in 3rd consecutive week, Chargers are tied for 4th in NFL with 22 this season. That, combined with Merriman getting healthy, is a pretty quick turnaround. I agree that Rivera deserves some credit.

If you notice

right before the awkward hug, Norv says to LT, “Great fucking call!” in reference to the Sproles play up the seam that Tomlinson and Sproles supposedly called.

Acee’s version of events is that Sproles told LT that he thought the play would work and LT went to Turner and told him.

I so badly want to see LT just get to a Super Bowl.

If that means keeping him on the roster for a few seasons while our next stud RB gets all the carries then so be it. The guy deserves it.

by JollyWaffle on Nov 9, 2009 9:21 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

What would be nice

Is that if we let Sproles walk, we could draft a RB who was a between the tackles runner that was also a kickoff/punt return guy. That way LT is there to spell him (since the ST work will take something out of him) and be an okay backup if he were to get hurt. I was hoping that guy was Jahvid Best, but it seems that, sadly, that is no longer a very good idea.

by Wonko on Nov 9, 2009 10:32 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

Saw that video this morning. It was jarring.

I don’t know that there are many guys like that in the league any more. There’s too big an injury risk for a guy returning kicks, and too much dollars given to a starting RB. I don’t think there are any starting RBs around the league returning kicks anymore, and Westbrook always got killed doing it.

You’re going to cringe at this, but I wouldn’t be 100% against putting Buster Davis on return duty next season.

$2 million

Does not seem like an awful lot to pay for a roster bonus.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

by Wonko on Nov 9, 2009 12:00 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That doesn't sound right
Tomlinson will receive an unspecified guaranteed amount of money in 2010, the source said. The amount might not be large enough to guarantee Tomlinson’s place on the team, but it gives him some security for the 2010 season.

Tomlinson reduced his salary in 2010 and 2011. He was scheduled to make $8 million next year and $9.275 million in 2011. The final three years of his old contract were worth $24 million.

Seems like he gets the money either way.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

by Wonko on Nov 9, 2009 4:53 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

More
In return for keeping his 2009 salary, Tomlinson reduced the overall payout of his three-year contract to $6.625 million

So that means the final 3 years are worth $17.375. He is making $6.75 millions this year leaving $10.625 million for the last two years. Then you subtract that roster bonus of $2 million and he gets $8.625 million for the final 2 years in salary (assuming there are no other bonuses). So, unless he gets $7 million in 2010 and $1.625 in 2011, the numbers don’t add up.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

I found the 2010 and 2011 details

here

2010 The $2 million roster bonus in March, and then $3 million base pay. Can also earn $2 million in yardage milestones.

2011 $6.15 million base

So the decision is gonna happen by March 2010 in which he would be due $5 million.

Just looked

He’s currently projected as a late 1st round pick, but it all depends on what he does at the combine I’m sure.

Keep in mind

We want a RB that can also catch the ball out of the backfield and do pass blocking. I’d wonder if a guy Dwyer’s size (and in Ga Tech’s run first offense) can do well in the receiving game (although, he might be good, but I don’t have an up to date scouting report handy right now).

To me, the ideal RB in this draft for our needs is C.J. Spiller. However, unless we start losing more games, I don’t see him being there when we pick.

by Wonko on Nov 9, 2009 12:51 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

And if he does have contract

I don’t like the idea of giving up a player to draft another player when you could have kept that player and still drafted someone. 2 is better than 1?

Plus, there is a chance that Spiller is a bit of a headcase. I’m not sure I would put so many eggs in that basket, but if he was there when our pick came up, that’s different. Then the risk might be worth the reward.

Spiller is very explosive

but is he a 20 carry a back player in your opinion? I think more than another homerun hitter and receiving threat we need a rb that can improve the ground game and take 20 carries a game. Dwyer has proven that he can carry the load in my opinion, I am not as confident that is the case with Spiller.
Dont get me wrong Spiller would be another great weapon for this offense and I would love to see him as a Charger.

I fairness at least half those backs had the same question about being able to handle 20 carries. So maybe the argument is moot because the concerns about Spiller are too speculatory.

Well, the discussion is about Spiller

I just wanted to point out that worry about how many carries an explosive back can get is a thing of the past. The modern NFL is mainly about getting explosive backs the right amount of carries to keep them explosive and then have a good second runner to compliment them. That still seems to hold true considering that there is only 1 player in the NFL that averages more than 21 carries per game and 2 others that barely average 20.

If

By “every down back” you mean a player who is capable of playing on 1st, 2nd and 3rd downs without being a passing or running game liability. Then yes I want that.

If by “every down back” you mean a player who is capable of playing every snap on offense from the 1st drive to the last drive. That player doesn’t exist. Stephen Jackson is probably the closest thing since I can’t really think of who they use to spell him. Benson is close, but they use Brian Leonard in some situations. AP comes out a lot for Chester Taylor, they just have a lot of carries to spread around so he still gets 20 (plus they get ahead and don’t need to pass anymore). All the other backs you mention spend a lot of time not being the “every down back” (by this definition). Especially Williams (since they use Stewart a lot, when healthy).

Michael Turner doesn’t even fit either definition. He can’t be used on passing downs because every one knows they don’t trust him (on 5 catches this year).

Yeah, I know the drill

But I was just participating in a conversation, asking why someone wouldn’t want a “20 carry back” on our team.

When I say “20 carry back,” I’m talking about a man, with two arms and two legs and a head who is capable of carrying the football 20 times on any given Sunday and getting 80+ yds and a TD or two.

Wonko is talking about a position on a football roster.

I’ve read this blog a lot over the past several months, this is where I come to get some deep knowledge about the Bolts. From what I’ve read, Wonko is one of the most intelligent participants here, I’m certain he must have gotten an A in statistics.

I thought we were just having a conversation until his “Oh damn” comment that basically said that I was just talking out of my ass, which was then “Highly rec’d” by you.

When I tried to clarify my statement, I screwed that up because “every down back” (while still a man with two arms, two legs and a head in my mind) wasn’t what I meant either. I thought it was what I meant at the time, but the reply I received illustrated the depths of my ignorance.

So, here I am, a passionate Charger supporter and fan of this blog, basically being told by three of the main authors of this blog that my commentary isn’t up to the standards of this forum.

I’m just trying to participate in your conversation, fellas, if nothing else than for some comic relief.

Didn’t mean to offend. I was mainly rec’ing this….

I think the ideal is get someone like Johnson, Jones-Drew or Williams who averages over 5 yards per carry and carries for less than 20 times. 20 times sounds like an awful lot in the Chargers offense.

and it sounds like you’re not too far away from that. None of those guys consistently carries more than 20 times a game, but against a team with a weak defense they’ve been known to carry it 25+ times to take advantage. There’s nobody on the Chargers roster that can really do that right now, which is what you’re saying.

I think everybody here is agreeing. The internet is just a poor place to try to communicate. One day they’ll come up with advanced emoticons to fix that.

By the way, Wonko is not a main author around these parts. He’s only here to bury anybody who claims Rivers is better than Brees under a pile of angry statistics.

The wrath you just got from him was a continuation of the preseason Gartrell Johnson debates we used to have. And I’ll admit I was wrong. This is the wrong offense for a RB like Gartrell. The Chargers need a back like MJD or Chris Johnson that is dangerous as a runner, receiver and blocker while managing to stay healthy.

That people are saying things that are wrong more lately. It’s making me ornery.

And, FWIW, Mr. Gen3ral challenged me on the 20 carry thing. So, he “deserved” my ornerarity when I found out he was misleading me with his “facts”. It seemed like you were concerned

that Dwyer could not be on the field every down if he was not a good enough receiver (a point that I am not sure about). Since you were worried that he could not be an every down back, I was just pointing out that Spiller has not proven, thus far, that he is an every down back at Clemson.

“20 carry back” was just a term I threw out meaning he could handle a fair number of carries a game. It was not meant to be an exact number that he had to get.

I have not watched Spiller play much so I am not a good judge, but I have heard people compare him to backs that are more third down receiving threats. That would fit in well with the Chargers offense, but it would be nice to get a back that was a little more of a between the tackles runner (something that you pointed out in your post that started all this, “What would be nice”.

by JeromeB on Nov 9, 2009 2:27 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

If this makes sense

I want an every down type of back. But, I’m not interested in having him being out there for every play. II don’t want a back that when he’s in he’s not an option in the passing game. But, I’m okay with having a RB that splits time with another back. That’s the way the NFL is these days. Keep your players rested and explosive.

The talk of Spiller being a 3rd down receiving back may have been before this year. He’s proven to a lot of scouts with his performance this year that he is much, much more than that. His grade right now by Scouts. Inc is a 94. That’s on par with Moreno and DeAngelo Williams and better than Chris Wells and Marshawn Lynch.

Thanks for your thoughts

on both backs. I will trust your opinion on Spiller as I have not seen him play much this year. I think Dwyer could probably catch the ball well enough that somebody would have to cover him, but I don’t know that for sure.
They probably will not take either one, but it is fun to think about.

There are a lot of Philly fans that travel for there team

I think I recall Jim Steeg saying that he was not worried about the game selling out, but a little worried about the mix of fans in the crowd.

Yeah

I remember them saying before the season started that this was the only game that was close to selling out.

We're boned.

Are you calling VJ a woman? I think the man in man crush refers to the sex of the crush…

Suppose...

LT decisively retires after the next couple seasons…as a Charger. We could hire him on as a running backs coach (not THE rb coach…yet), and still win a ring -with Rivers on board for the next 6 years, i like those chances. Granted, it’s a little different than playing yourself and winning that way, but a ring’s a ring, and his career in the league doesn’t have to be ova!

Oh, and a “Hello Gang!” to all.

"We suggest that in places in the Fourth World where things are really tough that you keep the record player going by rubbing two sticks together. And if all else fails, throw the record away...build your own green rosetta...try this recipe: We'll start with a lump of grass...the grass bone connected to the ankle bone...the knee bone connected to the wishbone...and then everybody moves to New York and goes to a party with Warren. Hey! " - Zappa

Hello!

and welcome to BFTB.

It’s very, very rare that a player retires and immediately becomes a coach. There’s good reason for that. It’s difficult for a guy LT shares the locker room with to respect him as a RB coach. The answer to every demand might turn into “Well if you know what you’re doing, why’d you have to hang them up?”

If he has any desire to coach, and I don’t know that he does, he’d be smart to get a job at TCU first and work his way up the way Mike Singletary did.

A lowlier position?

Mike Alstott went into scouting after his most recent neck injury (at the time he was what, 35? 36?). Perhaps LT could do the same and eventually become a coach at one position or another. Besides, the current offensive coordinator (Clarence Shelmon) was our RB coach, so it’s a bit of a moot point to have Shelmon directing the guy he taught for ten years to direct the guy the HE (LT), in turn, has played with for five years, plus a rookie/free agent pickup.

Can we PLEASE draft Ali Villanueva of Army this year??? I'd mortgage a kidney for a tackle/wideout hybrid.

Breaks my heart

I so wanted LT (and that’s LaDanian Tomlinson for any of you Giants fans) to defy logic and the odds, and excel well into his 30s. I figured if anyone could do it, he could. But I also wanted my ’87 Honda Civic to last 3-5 more years. And neither Cheryl Tiegs nor Christy Turlington ever called me! Point being, what I want rarely ever happens.

Maybe LT is still hobbled by the ankle. Or perhaps there’s more to the groin injury from last year. Right? It’s not because of age. Right? Not LT. Not MY LT! “Come back! Come back, LT! There’s work to be done!”
