Around SBN: Tobias Harris signs with Tennessee

Help is on the way to aid the ailing Giants defense. Linebacker Michael Boley and defensive tackle Chris Canty are both scheduled to take part in practice tomorrow when the Giants begin their on-field preparation for Sunday's game against the Chargers.

Last week, the injured duo took part in some individual drills, but this week they will be pushed even further. They certainly are needed, with the Giants riding a three-game losing streak.

Canty is gnarly.

Now I’m a bit worried. The Giants’ pass rush took a big dive when these guys went down. Maybe some of that had to do with not playing the Redskins, Lions, Raiders or Chiefs, but still it’s not a good sign.

Agreed

I just read the story about his free agency. He went from everybody wanting him to nobody wanting him overnight, and signed with NY under what he wanted because nobody else was calling. Damn shame.

I'm going to write a fan-post sometime

about what we could have done this off-season to avoid a lot of the problems we’ve had this year. Not fantasy stuff, but realistic stuff.

And signing Canty is near the top of my list.

We're boned.

Will it involve a switch to the 4-3?

Seriously though, please include not firing our entire defensive staff and replacing them with 4-3 guys who did not have much success in 2008.

No.

That’s why I said “realistic”.

I’ve said I like the 3-4 and want to keep it. I wish we had an actual 3-4 coordinator, but unfortunately all the good ones were hired while we were still in the playoffs, or just after we lost.

We're boned.

Dom Capers wasn’t. and I don’t think he was really doing anything. I think we dropped the ball by not getting him, but I guess Rivera earned a chance to be top dog…..

I agree 100%

and I would have loved to have him. You have to appreciate what he’s done in Green Bay, converting them in one off-season to a 3-4 and getting them in the top 5 in team defense DVOA, all without a dominant nose tackle or outside linebackers. That’s an amazing job.

It would have been a lot to ask, though, to fire Rivera and hire a new DC just days after exiting the playoffs, which is when both Capers and Nolan were hired. And Rivera seemed like he had things in hand, given the circumstances, and he was who Turner wanted in the job.

We're boned.

Green Bay has some wide bodies. Jolly, Pickett, Raji, are all 320+. Cullen Jenkins is a stud. They can eat up blockers.

by BORTZ on Nov 4, 2009 2:12 PM PST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Bottom line though

is that the organization really messed up in the 2006-07 off-season by not making their coaching decisions quickly, and by not locking up key coordinators that they knew they liked and wanted to keep. They probably could have talked Phillips into staying, from what I read, but they didn’t do anything about it because they didn’t think he would get the Dallas job.

We're boned.

yes Canty would have been a key cog on our D.

ummm

a lot of our problems stem from injuries to the d-line. And isn’t Canty just coming off an injury?

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Nov 4, 2009 1:25 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That he sustained a few days before the beginning of the season.

There’s no reason to assume it would have happened with us as well. One of those freak things.

We're boned.

by maestro876 on Nov 4, 2009 1:36 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

with our track record this year

he would have been in sweats on the sidelines with Jamal and Bingham.

If you want to be realistic about how Canty could have impacted our team, you have to look at how he is affecting his current team. I’m not saying he wouldn’t have been a good signing, but he is injured since the 1st game and has made Travis Johnson look like an ironman in comparison this year.

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Nov 4, 2009 1:43 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I dunno

Canty had 25 tackles and three sacks last year and would have cost us 7 mil/year; color me unimpressed.

Whoops

25 solos, 12 assists; still not worth that much methinks.

3-4 DEs aren't about sacks

or even tackles.

It’s about tying up blockers and controlling the line of scrimmage. He didn’t start every game 3 straight years for the Cowboys for nothing.

And in 2008

Dallas was only average on the DL.

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/dl2008

Castillo at just over 8 mil, Canty at 7, 15 on just the DTs; netiher of whom were on great units or produced great numbers. It doesn’t make sense to me.

Not to mention

That’s less cap space to lock up Rivers with.

I suppose.

I’m just thinking that he would have been an improvement over what we have, and it would have been nice to not have a rookie/practice squad/waiver wire guy playing along-side Castillo.

I’m sure they thought the rotation of the “Haitian Abomination” and Ryon Bingham would be enough. I didn’t think it could be much worse than, as my idiot friend dubbed him, “the Jewish leprechaun” ( he honestly thought Igor’s surname was O’Shanksy).

Burnett will definitely help.

But I don’t think the odds are very large that Hardwick will play.

Probably won't be able to go at full strength

But just getting him on the field is probably a step in the right direction. Offensive Linemen don’t get back into a rhythm without actually playing.

So the question becomes

Which is greater 75% Hardwick out of practice or 100% MoochSki?

I was trying to imply

That Hardwick won’t be truly 100% until he’s played a game or two. So, at some point you may have pay up front to get a reward later or else you end up with Mooch all year.

At the very least

Nick will improve the line calls and blitz pick-ups.

And not a moment too soon.

I still think

That even that will take a game (or maybe just a half) to get back into the swing of things. No doubt though that we are better in the long term if he starts playing this week.

Why?

I’m pretty sure that skill is one learned by watching film, no?

Maybe

Although I suspect you don’t get hit by 300 lb giants when you are watching film. And I’m guessing your injured (insert body part here) isn’t barking like a sonofbitch as you dissect that tape. There’s got to be a certain amount of “feel” that goes into making that kind of stuff and I assume that’s what normally separates guys like Hardwick from other C. He may not have that feel yet in game 1.

Burnett & Cooper to start at ILB?

Great …. Jacobs will have a freakin’ field day if this happens.

The reverse is also true

Siler & Dobbins (or Siler & Cooper) equals a field day for Eli and Kevin Boss.

Buck wants Dobbins/Siler as the starting ILBs. He thinks Cooper and Burnett are ladies that should be wearing dresses.
