James Holt promoted from practice squad to active roster, takes Chambers' spot -- ccpearce
Interesting, I thought Beckwith was favoured for this. Is Holt going to be better against NY's run?
At least it wasn't Zach Thomas because then we'd need a new leader for this blog (after John did himself in).
(And of course I found this in the twitter-links on the side, but thought it should be raised for discussion).

Very interesting. This move seems to suggest that we need help on special teams coverage teams more than we need depth at inside linbacker.

I do seem to recall
Holt making a bigger impact on ST in the preseason. I got the impression they liked him more than Beckwith.
(Also, the problem was that Beckwith was indeed favoured, but unfortunately for him Holt was favored, and since this is America favored wins out. Haha. I crack myself up with my word play).

It seems less might be more
for both Wonko and I, though I suspect I’m going to continue adding in a few more u’s than are normal around here (we’ve got lots more ewe’s per capita over in here in Oz as well. And now I think the pun-dits might have me ahead in the terrible joke stakes…)

But wasn't Holt playing the OLB role?
And I thought Beckwith was supposed to be the ST star (just from reading old threads on here).
I guess Siler played pretty well. Is English ok, and how has he gone the last few games (I know he seemed to be the best of an average, or worse, lot a few games ago).

Holt definately started to come on in the last few preseason games
but as you said, he is an OLB, and I thought we were thin at ILB…
ILB – Cooper, Burnett, Siler (and Dobins who is out for a few weeks or so)
OLB- Merriman, Phillips, English, Tucker, Holt
I think the theory is that we really aren;t in our base 3-4 that much anyways, so maybe 4 ILBs isn;t needed.

With Applewhite also out
We are somewhat thin at both LB spots. With Burnett coming back and the Chargers comfortable with Siler as the primary backup to both Cooper and Burnett (with Dobbins out) I think just have the extra LB will help with ST and depth concerns. If there were a cascade injury scenario where 2 out of Siler and Burnett had to leave the game you could probably rotate some extra nickel packages (with only 3 LBs) and some pseudo-4-3 where one of the OLBs mainly does pass rushing, the remaining ILB plays MLB and the 2 of the other OLBs play their main position with at most one of them designated for pass rushing duties. But, that’s a worse case scenario (assuming that there is confidence that Burnett will be ready to play most snaps) and would probably result with someone needing to go IR anyway (and you could bring up Beckwith or sign someone at that time).

he did go to Kansas. He’s a smaller guy. 6’2" 220-ish. Maybe his time on the practice squad taught him to cover a tight end…but I doubt it.

He won’t be asked to cover anyone. He’s being promoted to play special teams.

You know what's funny?
That’s about the same size as S Kevin Ellison (6’1 221) and only slightly bigger than Billy Volek (6’2 214).

yeah, and Holt had a better 40 yard dash time. cuckoo crazy.
by BORTZ on Nov 3, 2009 5:46 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That's not crazy
I expect that if two similar sized guys run the 40 and one of them is hurt that the healthy guy will run it faster.

Less, but I doubt he was fully healthy until some time during training camp.

From what I recall coming out of the draft
Ellison fits the body type more of a linebacker than a defensive back.

HOLT
had 10 sacks his senior year 3 forced fumbles 1 pick 58 solo tackles..i didnt hear much about him in training camp just that he was in competion for wilhiems roster spot but i guess he cant hurt on special teams right?

He’s an outside linebacker. He would have been competing for playing time with the likes of Applewhite, Tucker and English.

Also saw this
5. LB James Holt
Holt has been arguably the most impressive member of this year’s crop of undrafted rookies. He has made a seamless transition from outside linebacker at Kansas to an inside linebacker in Ron Rivera’s 3-4 system.
Holt has lived up to his reputation as a sideline-to-sideline defender and has been surprisingly apt at dropping into coverage. With a strong performance over the final two weeks of the preseason, Holt can put himself in the running for the final ’backer position on the 53-man roster.

also listed as an OLB
on the chargers site…
Probably a moot point as he (hopefully) won’t see much time on the field with the defense, mainly with ST

I'll note
that Applewhite was listed as an OLB, but spent a fair amount of time inside.

He looks bigger
But who knows for sure outside of the team?
He looked quick in preseason. We just may get to see him at more than ST. With the load that NY brings in the running game & our need to keep pressure on Eli, keeping our guys as fresh as we can will be very important.

I saw James Holt at Kansas
My brother went to school there, so i got to watch some games. He was a beast, very underrated. He did make huge plays, but also did the unnoticed jobs so his teammates were able to make plays. what i also noticed is that he isn’t exactly an athletic freak, but his defense awareness is excellent
In the end, we all lose. Except some people.
