A change of scenery
might do him good and the Chiefs don’t have many quality targets, jeeze the brought toomer back from the grave. Remind me again why they traded Gonzalez?

Please explain
I thought they only had one decent option at WR. Is it odd because they have so many holes, and Chambers is a fairly old plug?

Mostly I just don’t see the point of bringing in an older, expensive guy to play the second half of a lost season.

As a Chiefs fan
I’d like someone to explain to me how Todd Haley is supposed to be an expert at coaching Wide Receivers, but the Chiefs bring in Ashley Lelie, FAIL, Amani Toomer, FAIL, Bobby Engrahm, FAIL, Bobby Wade, he’s been OK, etc.
The Jeremy Maclin’s of the worlds are gotten through the draft, darn Philly!!!

I think you aren't seeing the forrest through the trees
The Chiefs (rightly so) have been using their draft picks to pick up pieces of their offensive and defensive lines. That is a solid strategy for a rebuilding team. The problem is (and it would still be true if they drafted a WR) is that they have more holes than can be filled by one or two drafts. To put a bandaid on that you try to look at retread veterans like the WRs you mention. However, the best WR coach in the world can’t really coach up an aging WR. Just be patient, if Haley sticks around he’ll draft some WRs once his lines are in place.

Makes sense
The Chiefs aren’t a team that’s going to be stretching the field on you and I still think Chris Chambers can be productive in the X position, he’s always excelled in press coverage. A spread offense like the one that made Cassel look so great in 08 needs guys like Chambers with soft hands and precise route running over blazing speed like what we run here in SD. Best of luck to him.

Good guy who's prime is behind him
He can probably teach Bowe some things about routes/positioning/technique, but he isn’t all that good anymore. Maybe the emotional or mental problems he has been having really affected him and a change will help. The Chargers got what they could out of him, and the bigger, faster, better Floyd took his spot. It is just the way it works. He might be a good fit for a team that is working on next year. I wish him luck. He always seemed like a good guy.

Definitely raises an eyebrow
regarding how good their talent evaluation and cap management staff can be. This is a bad move on the Chiefs part. The idea that a 1-6 team “needs” anything especially at Chambers’ price and age. And that’s not even considering that Chambers may not be better than Bowe or Wade or Bradley. This is either a bad move by a bad front office or token attempt at placating their fans (and kind of insulting their intelligence) by signing a vet to say that they are taking things “seriously”. If I was a Chiefs fan I’d want my team to embrace the rebuild and get back to being a playoff contender. This is a move more in line with the Kansas City Royals. What a crappy time to be a KC resident.

$2 million investment is nothing if it can help the team win an extra game or two this year.

What?
Win an extra game or two? What good would that do them? They should be focusing on what will win them games in 2010-2015, 2009 is a lost year. Failing to recognize that is a sign of bad management in my opinion.

Then don't play like it doesn't play
Play like what matters this year is getting a little better each day so you can be better next year. Plus, I don’t think guys on a 1-6 team are going to think that passing up on a guy who got cut would signify some sea change that this year doesn’t matter since they never knew that it was really an option.
I’m also saying that if you do think Chambers benefits your team, then see if you can bring him in on a more reasonable deal once he clears waivers. And if you miss on him because another foolish team claims him, its no real loss to you anyway since your season is lost.

Chiefs arent worried about money though
I know its a lot of cash but they have a lot to spend right now. Yeah hes not going to turn around the Chiefs but hes not hurting us either we dont have many good WRS atleast he will bring in some vet leadership and competition to see what the other guys have before next season. If he plays well then we resign him if not oh well we have the money to burn.

maybe he’ll do well there and show the younger receivers the ropes…he may be inspired by having been waived and show his ass…not that it’ll save their season but it could give them something to build on

IMO thats what they are going for we all know our season in KC is over. I just want to see improvement in the WR core as a whole.
by tomahawk44 on Nov 4, 2009 12:04 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
But what about cap space?
Cap space saved this season can be rolled over to next season (assuming the rules don’t change too much, although maybe that’s key here in that the Chiefs don’t care about future monetary concerns because of that sort of uncertainty).

Teams are actually saving money
Because next year is set to be uncapped (unless a new CBA deal comes by then). There is a record number of cap room now b/c of that.

I'm just not sure all that is worth the coin they have to send Chambers' way.
There have got to be better veteran WRs out there. They had Toomer in the preseason, he’s a class act and was a very solid WR for years.

Chiefs have a lot of spare change at the moment though
I wouldnt worry about the money I just think they brought him in to mentor because in KC this year that is a word we have heard on a consistent basis. I wouldnt expect Chambers to get a ton of playing time but Im going to say hes an upgrade over Bobby Engram

KC
is below minimum cap. They have to spend money, they have bad receivers; why not take a shot? It makes more sense than most of their off-season moves did to me. Chambers isn’t better than Bowe, but he has more potential than the rest of their receiving corps.

Actually...
They are under the Cap Floor so if they dont spend the money it just gets split up at the end of the year to everyone who attended camp. So really it is low risk High Reward. I think you guys should be questioning your own GM, Who gave up a 2nd rounder for that contract.
Really it is a good move for the Chargers, but I would figure they would want to hang on to any talent they have. Considering they are desperatly hanging onto their playoff chances and all.

How does Chambers cap number work for this season?
Since KC picked him up off waivers do they prorate his cap number for the proportion of 2009 games the he’ll be on the KC roster?
by Trendsearcher on Nov 3, 2009 3:31 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Not really sure
I would imagine it gets prorated and the Chargers can roll the extra cap space into next season.

I think the vast majority of us would disagree that Chambers will thrive in KC because it’s Cassel, not Rivers, throwing to him.

I for one know that Chambers had a better chance of being good with Rivers as much as I hate to say it but as of right now Rivers is the better Qb but he does as of right now..:)
by tomahawk44 on Nov 4, 2009 12:17 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
On top of that
Chambers dropped a bunch of passes that Rivers threw pretty accurately. Even if Cassel was more accurate, Chambers might still figure out how to drop them (especially considering that he has trouble getting separation so a defender could be assisting in that dropped pass).

We all are better than this bickering over who is “trash” talking. We don’t watch every Chargers game, just like you don’t watch every Chiefs game (lucky you, this year), so we have different prospectives. Even so, the following comment is not something I would expect from a moderator:
I’m pretty sure a lot of their commenters have no knowledge of the NFL outside of Kansas City.
Most of us play fantasy football, and know for instance, that Phillip Rivers is usually a good play, not at Drew Brees level, but better than Matt Cassel level, etc., but as a moderator, I shouldn’t have to explain that to you.
