Big Blue View on the scene to answer your Giants questions
Hi guys, my name is Jim, I am one of the co-writers on Big Blue View, the SBNation home for the New York Giants. Obviously my Giants need to rebound, but it won't be easy against the Chargers. Bear with me, I'll get to all your questions as fast as I can.
Please Rec this FanPost to keep it at the top until Sunday
Let's get the two questions out of the way:
1. No, it is not supposed to snow Sunday.
2. Yes, I think the Giants made the right choice in Eli Manning.
Looking forward to the rest of your questions!
Thanks!
Jim

What's the issue on offense for you guys?
Are you struggling to get the run game going? Having protection issues?
And do you expect Brandon Jacobs to rush for more or less than 200 yards against our defense?
We're boned.

honestly
I think the biggest problem on offense is our defense. The defense over the last 3 weeks has been as bad as any Giants defense I remember watching, and I think it’s getting into the O’s head that they need to make big plays to keep up with the other teams. That leads to abandoning the run way too early, and lot’s of ill-advised throws down the field.
I also think Eli’s foot is bothering him more than he’s letting on. He went from being the #2 ranked QB in the NFL 3 weeks ago to #15 this week. I know some of that is going from playing teams like the Chiefs/Bucs/Raiders to playing the Saints/Cards/Eagles, but no matter how much of a talent discrepancy there is, it’s not possible that that’s the only explanation. Heck, Donovan McNabb looked awful against a Raiders D that Eli picked apart.

That’s the second time I’ve seen somebody mention ill-advised downfield throws. I would imagine the Giants fans to be very happy with the downfield throws, since the Giants lead the league in 20+ yard passing plays.

they had a really good mix going early in the season
but the past 3 weeks, it seems like they’ve been panicking – the timing of the downfield throws has been atrocious. I can’t tell you how many times on 3rd and short they’ll heave a deep ball.
Earlier in the season, they were running the ball and controlling the short passing game, and then when the safeties would start to cheat they’d burn them deep. They also had a few screen passes that broke for long gains. Lately, they’ve gotten away from that. So it’s not necessarily that I’m against deep passes, but the timing of them lately has been bad, and Eli’s accuracy since the foot injury has been off.

Any chance that Ross plays on Sunday?
Most of what I read is attributing Manning’s past 3 games to his injured foot. Is there any sign that it’s been getting better with each week?
Where has the pass-rush been? Can you blame the struggles there on Osi not being 100%?
What are my chances of making it out alive if I wear my Rivers jersey?

I can answer the first one
Ross is currently without a hamstring (maybe he lost it playing poker or something), and the fact no progress has been shared by the team in forever, he is getting close to the IR list (in my estimation).

WR...
Post Plaxico, it looks like Eli has found some guys he really likes to throw at, most notably S. Smith, Nicks and Manningham (when healthy). Any word on if we will see Ramses Barden get a shot this year? He is a huge target at 6’-6" (compared to the other Giants WRs he is huge…he would actually only be average in height on the Chargers roster), and eventually could become Vincent Jackson like with his size (although I doubt he possesses the same speed). I am a Cal Poly alum and watched Ramses throughout his college career, and it would be nice to see him to succeed at the next level. I want to hear your take on how far away you think he is from actually getting some consistent playing time.
Do or do not. There is no try.

Just a thought on this
I remember hearing about both Jackson and Barden before they were drafted. Both were thought to be raw. However, Jackson was close enough to being ready that he went in the 2nd round, Barden went much later. Jackson took at least year before he really even saw the field and a few more years after that before he was a reliable starter. If you think of Barden as a rawer Jackson you basically need to keep reminding yourself to be patient whilst waiting for him to excel in NFL.

Agree...
I totally agree with the time frame you are proposing. The one thing that Barden had going for his this year was that Plaxico was gone, and there have been a slew of injuries to the Giants WR corps pretty much on a weekly basis. He conceivably could see some playing time just due to sheer luck and injuries to other players.
Although I do think Ramses is still a few years away from making a big impact, I was just curious is he was even on the radar at all. And I think Ramses’ ceiling is more along the lines of Malcom Floyd than VJ. Hands and size go a very long way, but if you add speed to that (like VJ does) then you are the total package. I don’t think Ramses has the speed part…but he doesn’t necessarily need it to make a career out of catching balls.
Do or do not. There is no try.
by Clip Show on Nov 3, 2009 1:02 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The Plaxico thing
Didn’t end up working in Barden’s favor since Manningham, Nicks and Smith all stepped up big time. Plus, they also have Sinorice Moss (a top draft pick) wandering around there somewhere. He’s both a little raw and a lot buried.

I'm really excited for Ramses
and by all accounts he looked awesome in training camp (of course, in retrospect dominating the Giants secondary isn’t all that impressive), but the reports are that he’s really struggled memorizing the playbook and is still very raw. I think of him almost like one of those young latin american pitching prospects, who can throw 98 MPH but don’t really have much control yet. You know the talent is there, it’s just a matter of whether they can harness it or not.

really only one bad step away from surgery? Does he look like he’s been running with apprehension to protect his foot?

Yes he has a broken bone in his foot, but can’t do any worse damage to it by playing. He hasn’t shown any signs to me that he is holding back, although the offense has been so inept lately its hard to tell who is playing well

i know there are problems in the secondary but have opposing teams gotten more out of their running game recently? where do you feel the giants have the strength in matchups and where are the weaknesses?

The weaknesses right now are definitely in the linebackers. Not enough athletes there, one of the starters (Pierce) best days are behind them, and one of the other starters (Danny Clark) really shouldn’t be.

He has played well when he has been on the field. Hard to say “awesome” about the 3rd string running back, but I’ll give you “in the same state as awesome, but still quite a few miles to go”…..how’s that?

I have to imagine New York’s plan will be to take them away by applying pressure with their front seven since their secondary is rather pedestrian.

no, it's ok
you guys can talk as much crap about our secondary as you want. I promise it won’t be as bad as we’re giving them over at BBV.
Corey Webster is really the only guy out there who should be a starter on a championship caliber team, and he can’t cover everybody (especially when they have him playing a zone).

FO on NYG's run defense
FO’s numbers have the Giants D at 7th in ALY, and at 3rd up the middle, but not so hot on end runs, and near the bottom against long plays. Is this more of their problems with the secondary? if so, do I smell a lot of screen action?
by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Nov 3, 2009 4:35 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
The have injuries to their secondary
And CC Brown is absolutely awful and his counterpart at safety (Michael Johnson, I think) is not good either. They both struggle in run protection and can easily be manipulated so that they cheat up towards the box (and then get burned on play action. see: DeSean Jackson TD) and then even when they play pass they have trouble working with the CBs and getting good coverage. I expect to see a lot of deep corner and post routes, mostly run through play action (although with Norval, you never know).

to attempt to figure out the Giants game plan only leads to severe bleeding of the ears, take it from a guy with 30 years experience in trying.
The problem is, when you play “aggressive” on defense, it leaves your secondary exposed, and this secondary has been exposed more than Pee Wee in a dirty movie theater. I really can’t tell you what to expect on defense from the Giants.

that's what Cardinals fans told us
To me, that’s been the most troubling thing about the Giants D. The secondary is banged up (2 of their top 3 guys are out) and we knew the linebackers weren’t going to be very good, but our D-line was supposed to be elite, and so far it’s been very average at best.

By the way, have we had a less predictable Chargers team in the past few years? We have no clue which team will show up on Sunday. The one that got destroyed by Pittsburgh? The one that looked flawless against KC? The one that competed with Denver and Baltimore? It’s a crapshoot, and exciting.

That’s really what i expect, not exactly the time where we are going to step up for that run, i would love it if we started to get on a roll this week. I’m pretty much more optimistic for a couple reasons Philly doesn’t like traveling to the east coast, we always seem to play New York well in the regular season, i.e last year vs the Jets and a couple years back at home vs. the Giants, and finally the Broncos may look a bit more vulnerable after this week.

A lot of Chargers fans wished we had signed him. A lot of Cowboy fans I know think he is an under-producing bum and were glad to see him go. What do you think of him? Is he going to help the d-line because he is a dominant force or is he only going to help because it adds another body to the d-line rotation?

most underrated
player on defense, offense and on special teams?
by cameronm on Nov 4, 2009 2:21 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
on D it’s either Corey Webster or Mathias Kiwanuka. Webster had a stretch going back to early last season w/o giving up a TD, although he gave one up against the Cards. He hasn’t looked as dominant the last 3 weeks as he had most of last year and the first 5 weeks this year, but I imagine it’s pretty hard to be a good cornerback when you have literally no help from your safeties.
Kiwanuka is the overlooked guy on the D-line, but he’s probably just as good if not better than Osi at this point, and in a few games has clearly been the best player on the line. He’d be a starter on almost every other team in the league, b/c he can also be a 3-4 LB.
On O: I don’t know if Steve Smith still counts as underrated, so I’ll go with Hakeem Nicks. He’s been the one bright spot over the past few weeks. It looks like the Giants are gonna have a great 1-2 punch at WR for the next few years (and maybe even more if Manningham can remember to catch the ball). Also, the entire line often gets a lot of praise, but Chris Snee might be the best guard in the NFL, especially on pull blocking.
On Special Teams: Definitely Jeff Feagles. The guy is one of the best punters in the history of the NFL, and though his leg strength is almost completely gone, he’s still the best at directional punting. He’s like the Pedro Martinez of punters. He’s not Mike Scifres, but he’s definitely still in that top tier. He did have an awful game against the Cardinals two weeks ago, but it was the first time in his 6+ seasons with the Giants that he had a bad game, so I’m gonna give him the benefit of the doubt.

that's a tough one for me
a few years ago, Tomlinson was definitely my favorite, but I haven’t really been a fan of the way he’s carried himself as his skills have declined. Still, he was awesome to watch in his prime.
On the flip side, I was never a big Rivers fan, but he started to win me over when he played with the injured leg two years ago, and the more I hear about him the more I have started to like him.
And I like Shawne Merriman as a player, but I hate the fact that you guys got him with our pick. That stings a bit.

a few years ago, Tomlinson was definitely my favorite, but I haven’t really been a fan of the way he’s carried himself as his skills have declined.
I really couldn’t agree with that more.

Can't speak for others
Favorite: I want to say it’s Mr. Williams, but this year I have to say Gates or Scifres. Probably Robopunter. The PR Machine is a close #3. Gotta root for the hometown guys too, like Nwagbuo and Applewhite. Got high hopes for the Hatian Canuck and the USC kid too. LT is great and all, but he’s from TCU, so that takes him out of the running for my favorite Charger. It’s fun to say “Legedu Naanee” over and over.
Least: Last year, I’d have said Wilhelm. This year, I’d say Hart or Chambers, but now I can’t. Not sure. Can I pick the injury bug? I’d hate to say “Mooch” even though he’s the weak link on the OL, because I understand the spot he’s in and I think he’s a quality career backup.

Why do you call him Haitian?
He’s Cuban B Jamaican. It makes more sense if you think about it, Jamaica has a little closer ties to Canadia what with them both paying taxes to the Queen.

We actually have a healthy Jamacian population here
they come here and work, and then go back home once they retire to enjoy life in the home country with lots of money to live off of.

Scifres is awesome too
was it last year or the year before where he had that ridiculous playoff game? That was fun to watch

Last year. January, 2009. He’s had a handful of games like that, just never on as big of a stage.
