Around SBN: Has Kentucky Improved Since the Non-Conference Season?

Kevin Acee wraps up the game. Eric Weddle has a sprained MCL and will miss at least the next two games. Shawne Merriman didn't aggravate his foot injury, it was just too painful to play through. He may miss next week's game. Shaun Phillips is playing out of his mind good.

DAMMIT.

We’re going to miss him at Dallas. Lord can we stop with the injuries, please?

Oliver and Gregory won’t be too bad. Cason will be a better fit to play nickel in that game anyways.

On the bright side

KA is a sharp dresser… so we’ve got that going for us.

Sorry Weddle is injured

Get well quickly, Eric.

In his absence, I’d sure like to see Spillman get some reps.

Not going to happen

Spillman wasn’t even active against the Chiefs. FS is not a position where the team needs/want to go with a rotation.

Really?

Our SS/FS positions are pretty much interchangeable & we’ve been rotating opposite Weddle quite a bit. Weddle’s loss will be felt – not glossing that over at all – but we can weather it.

With Weddle out, Norv could quite easily decide to activate Spillman. It’s not like he hasn’t been active at all this year.

Maybe it won’t happen, but mark my words – you will be hearing good things about Spillman’s play with this unit in the future. Maybe not this year, but he’s going to make an impact.

They will go with the guys they already trust

So Cason will go to nickel, Gregory will fill in full time for Weddle and the Ellison/Oliver rotation will remain as FS. Maybe Spillman gets activated and fills in for Cason on STs. Or maybe Hughes gets activated and fills that role.

Oliver may be

on the field for most of snaps while Weddle is out, I think he is earning more time with his play each week.

by JeromeB on Nov 30, 2009 12:25 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

He already is

Ellison basically plays on first down and then comes out for second and third down unless is second or third and short. Ellison is technically the starting FS because he plays on the first play, but Oliver is the guy who plays there the most. When Weddle went down, Gregory moved to SS on Sunday. I don’t see any reason why this would change.

I may have flipped the SS and FS assignments

But the logic is still the same. I can’t really tell who is the FS and SS, because the Chargers don’t really have those positions. I think they call Weddle the FS though even though he lines up like a SS. So I probably did flip the position titles.

You did

but it is just their terminology so no big deal.

I guess my thought was that Oliver could be on the field full time (pretty much every snap). I know this will not go over big, because everybody is in love with Weddle, but I think since Oliver has been getting some real time he has been the best safety in coverage on the team.

You can think whatever you want

I’m just expressing what is the likely coaching move that will be made.

Does Buck

love Spillman as much as John loved Gartrell?

More

Buck never gives up on his guys (Spillman, Tolbert, Dobbins, Siler). I jumped off the one-man Gartrell bandwagon eventually.

And so far

The ones who have gotten their chance are looking pretty good, no?

You’re right, Wonko – it’s very unlikely that Spillman sees reps at safety while Weddle is out. Didn’t say that he would, only that I would LIKE to see it.

John, I wanted Gartrell to work out, too. There just wasn’t room at the time. We may try a similar experiment in this draft. ;-)

That's fine

But I’m not sure why you’d want to see a guy who is normally inactive thrust into a starting role over the more experienced guys who normally play ever week.

I'd like to see him get some reps

And I can’t think of any opponent more suited for getting guys like Spillman those reps. I didn’t say starting reps, either – he’d rotate in for a few plays.

Anything can happen – anything. Look at the injuries we’ve already suffered. Game reps, regardless of the opponent, are irreplaceable.

Did you think at the beginning of the year that we’d see James Holt on the field? Or a possible ILB’ing unit of Dobbins & Siler?

Whatever we can safely do to see that our b/u’s are fully prepared, I like to see. I don’t think that we’ll find a “safer” opponent this year than Cleveland.

He may get some reps

There are times that with a healthy Weddle we had the two starting CBs, Weddle, Oliver, Gregory and Cason on the field at the same time. It remains to be seen as to who the “dime” back will be. Although it may be that Hughes gets activated over Spillman and he becomes that guy. It’s also possible that Ellison fills in for Weddle on those plays, I guess.

I don’t think any NFL team gets into the habit of giving out reps just to get players some reps, unless its a blowout. If that’s the case, then I think every Boltbacker will want to get him some reps, just as they would like to see Volek take some snaps again, but beyond that we’ll just have to see what the coaches think the best way to line these guys up is.

what about...

Old boy that got shot? Do we still have the rights on him or is he even worth bringing into camp this next year?

Of course not. John was looking into ways to carry Gartrell’s babies.
