A Question From a Chiefs Fan

i was just wondering why the chargers cut Chris Chambers. He has just been really awesome in his first three games a Chief. He has caught 10 passes for 249 yards and 2 TDs and helped the Chiefs beat the Steelers. How is the Chargers receiving core without him? why did you get rid of him?

Capt

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Chris Chambers gets past Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark to run for 61 yards, setting up a game-winning field goal during overtime of an NFL football game Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, in Kansas City, Mo. The Chiefs won the game 27-24.

P.S. - screw those Broncos. im rooting for the Chargers to make the playoffs just so the Broncos won't

a lot of reasons

he appeared to have lost a step, he was dropping a bunch of passes and he had become the fifth best receiver on the offense, behind Vincent, Floyd, Naanee and Gates.

hes a good dude and im glad hes doing well tho

Simply,

1) He was playing awfully
2) He was getting old
3) He was expensive
4) He was taking play time away from some good young receivers

And by playing awfully we mean

Had trouble catching the ball, had trouble getting open and had trouble beating his man for jump balls. He was a total liability in the passing game. Moving him to the bench and then off the team has really helped the offense run more smoothly, because dropping balls on third down or not getting open on third down stalled out drives and made the offense sputter.

There is a chance that for some reason he executes better with a chip on the shoulder. I’m not ready to dismiss that some of his better performances have come just after he joined a team (as a rookie 2nd round pick when he probably thought he should have gone in the 1st round, traded to the Chargers and claimed by the Chiefs) as a pure coincidence.

He looks like

a new man in KC. That’s great, I think he needs more balls than the Chargers could throw him with VJ and Gates, et al. When he came to the Chargers he was the new number one receiver, but he had injuries and there are just a bunch of talented receivers here. I think the Chargers are better off with Floyd who has better hands. Great job beating the Steelers by the way, those guys have owned the Chargers lately.

This will not be the same CHIEFS you played a 3 weeks ago!

Let me just go on the record and first say, mad respect for the Bolts. They are the cream of the crop for the AFC west and we want what you have. The talent is all over the place and the defense has really stepped it up over the last 4 games.

With that being said, look for a very competitive game this Sunday against the Chiefs. We can certainly win. I know, we win a game against the Steelers and we are not in realty! This is not true. The Chiefs have won 3 of their last 5 games and dumping LJ has really helped this team to include the addition of Chambers. Additionally, our defense is getting pressure and causing turnovers. I hope for a great game in San Diego this weekend and good luck. Go Chiefs!

You team aways plays hard against us, but the Chefs have no chance this week. Feel free to use some of last weeks magic on Denver in weeks 13 and 17 though.

I'm torn...I don't want to lose the top 10 draft pick

But KC is on an emotional high that will carry over the rest of the season. San Diego is emotionally done and popping the champagne corks already, at least Cromartie and crew. So, logically, KC wins this week, but I really want to stay in the top 10 for the draft.

Those darn emotionally done Chargers

I do worry that the Chargers would think that this win is so important that they would take off the rest of the season.

Maybe if they had a few more vets who had been to the playoffs and won could tell these guys that this win doesn’t mean that they can coast the rest of the season.

Wait! They do have those. 90% of the team is made up of those. I’m not f___ing worried about this at all. We must be thinking of some other team. The Bengals had a big win against the Steelers a week ago. Maybe you are thinking of them. They are probably the ones that are emotionally done.

Also the Broncos. Although in addition to being emotionally done, they are emotionally immature.

Unfortunately for them, their head coach is to blame for that.

I don't think so.

I think these guys won’t be happy with just a division title. They’re as hungry for a ring as any team in the league, and your chances of making the SB double if you have one less playoff game. I don’t suspect that Indy will leave the door open on the #1 seed, but the #2 is there for the taking. These guys aren’t due for a letdown: they’re going to see the Chiefs as a motivated-but-beatable team in what might be a must-win game.

If San Diego wins this game, then Denver has to win all 3 remaining division games. The Chargers aren’t unbeatable, but they don’t look past anybody. When was the last time SD lost to a bad team? There was the ‘07 Chiefs, but they had a winning record when they faced the Chargers… and the ’08 Bills, but they were also riding a great early record. I wouldn’t bet on KC in this game straight-up even at 5:1.

by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Nov 23, 2009 5:48 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The problem with your argument is

That it is not a must win game. Denver is done. They may not even win another game. Look at their schedule. You can’t possibly be pumped up for a meaningless game.

That's the thinking of a fan from a team that just wants to MAKE the playoffs.

If we get to the 3rd or 4th seed (which I agree we probably will, win or lose on Sunday), our odds of getting the only thing that matters are 1/16. But if we get a better record than NE or Cincy, our odds are 1/8.

Frankly, another playoff appearance, or even another Championship loss, would do little to quiet the Norv-haters and would give this team nothing except avoiding a black eye. There’s only one way to get what we want, and that’s much harder without a bye.

by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Nov 24, 2009 3:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

So

You say “I don’t think so” and follow that up agreeing with me that this team won’t let up and the idea that they are emotionally done is ludicrous and borderline insane. Bad choice for a title.

Momentum is in your favor? The Chiefs are coming off an improbable, but largely luck-fueled win over a 6-4 team. The Chargers are coming off trouncing a 6-4 team. Your best receiver wasn’t good enough to play here any longer. Color me unimpressed.

They are a veteran team that can spot a weak opponent when they see one and figure out how to exploit them. There is nothing about that Chiefs game that would point towards any future success. God, it’s like it’s week 5 and I’m talking to a Broncos fan.

That's A LOT...

Of shit talking by you cpa913…you do know that we are going to rape the Chiefs right? You beat a team that was down to their 3rd string QB…and barley might I add.Plain and simple you got lucky and the defending champs were unlucky, this is the year of the injury.Had it not been for a few lucky plays you would have lost.Luck is a hell of a thing, shit we’ve skated by a shit load of times off of pure luck,so we know.

So I think that by you being so confident that you’re a good team and that you’re going to beat us is being WAY too cocky on your part.I could see it if you were actually in contention for the division or even a wild card spot, but you are in neither position. We all don’t know what will happen, you might very well be right and you will pull out a win,but the confidence and sureness that you’re brimming with is VERY VERY premature.

Oh and the SuperBowl has to be played by an AFC & a NFC team apiece,so It would be impossible for the Breezer to play Favre in the big show.

We released Chambers because

1) Emergence of Vincent Jackson as our #1 receiver began to limit Chambers targets.
2) Emergence of Malcolm Floyd as our #2 receiver began to limit Chambers targets.
3) Emergence of Legadu Naanee as our #3 receiver began to limit Chambers targets.
4) Chambers was making ~$7 million, which is too much to pay for a #4 receiver
5) Chambers was dropping a few balls each week, not getting separation to get open, and becoming irrelevant/ineffective in the Chargers offense.

That is not to say Chambers isn’t still a solid receiver, and can’t be successful in another offense. I don’t think anyone is saying he’s washed up or anything like that, but the Chargers are in a nice situation where we have a lot of younger, cheaper talent. Hope you enjoy him and able to re-sign in 2010.

His numbers on the Chiefs are kind of irrelevant.

While he was in San Diego, in 2009, he had a hard time getting open and a hard time catching the balls that did get thrown his way.

It’s fairly understandable that he would put up more numbers in Kansas City, considering Bowe is out and he isn’t playing behind Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates.

Dwayne Bowe 07- current

Jackson has two years on Bowe but Bowe wouldnt be a started in SD? You guys are high pass what you are smoking please…

Bowe is certainly as good as if not better than Floyd and Naanee. His skillset doesn’t fit into the Chargers offense as well as Floyd’s does, though. Also, Naanee is able to run the Wild Frog which Bowe probably couldn’t, so I doubt they’d rather have him over Naanee either. If one was building a team, they’d take Bowe over either of them, though.

We are a play against Dallas, a play against Oakland, a play against Jacksonville

from a 6-4 team.

Just one play in each of those games. San Diego is not that special. If you think so, watch the Saints or the Colts.

(Raiders game 1 should be listed here, 409 yds off, we let them off the hook)
(Cowboy's should be listed here - They are who we thought they were)
Skins
Raidaaas (game 2)

Next victim: Bolts - Thanks for Chambers by the way, Cassel to Chambers = Touchdown KANSAS CITY!

who keep barely squeaking by sub-par teams? Wonko, you should show him their DVOA charts.

This is actually a sign of a bad team

They either get blown out or play close games. Sometimes you win close games, sometimes you lose. It’s not something to be proud of.

Like the Broncos last year. They either won close or got blown out.

Reverse for the Chargers. They either lost close or blew the opposition out.

You've written here before,,,

And that’s why it surprises me how foolish you have acted. You are usually a smart, level headed commentator and have solid arguments, and now you have drank from the kool aid that they have been serving at AP.I have seriously lost the respect I had for you by your insisting and annoying arguments and redundant questions.
Have a nice Thanksgiving!!

Another Chiefs fan here

I just want to say thanks for answering some of our questions. I for one am guessing that you guys will beat us again this week, but I do think we will keep it much closer. That game at Arrowhead was the worst the Chiefs have played all season. Obviously you guys had a lot to do with that, but there was sloppy play that was worse then what we have seen in other games this year and it appeared that the team gave up, which is one thing that they haven’t done in other games this year, even when down by several scores. If you look at the number of points KC has scored in the fourth quarter I think you’ll see that it backs this up. I think you all raise some valid points about Chambers, but if we can ride this wave of “effort” he is giving us for the rest of the year I will have no complaints. I have two questions for you:

First, any chance Cromartie doesn’t play this week with all this night club drama?

Second, do you feel that Merriman is becoming the dominant player he once was or have injuries (and possibly roids) had an effect on him?

Feeling "The Love" and "Drinking the Kool AId"

Unless he gets suspended

Cromartie will play.

Merriman is improving every game. Early this year he was recovering from a major injury and not playing for a year, and he injured his groin a couple games in.

1. What Maestro said

2. Also, just the presence of Merriman has made our entire pass rush more effective. SP#95 has had a tremendous year because #56 is back. Also, yes, Merriman is getting better week by week. Teams are also running away from him, letting Coop and Weddle to make tackles in the middle of the field.

It was, in fact, the worst game you guys have played this year. It was only our fourth best game, though.

Merriman’s best season as a pro was 2007. He was suspended in 2006. He has looked more and more like the player we saw in 2007 as he’s gotten healthier this year.

Fly criteria, bury me in Africa
With whips and spears, and rough diamonds out of Syria

Retard-less, I'mma blow regardless
Resume is straight up live, I shank niggas up for larger E's
And speak with the youth in the spot, eat the fresh fruit in the crop
All these hip hoppers eat cock

In the back of my mind, though

I’m still just really worried about the team being distracted by everything that’s going on this week. They’ve got the blood drive today, Thanksgiving, the block party on Friday, the 50th anniversary celebration, plus the latest issues with the law. It’d be easy to think “No problem, it’s the Chiefs, we’ll roll them.” That concerns me. I still think they’ll win, but I think there’s legitimate reason to be a bit worried.

Why exactly are Chiefs fans talking smack here?

No, seriously. How is beating a team without its Super Bowl-winning quarterback for its final drives somehow an accomplishment that elevates the Chiefs above their pathetic 3-7 record (with the other wins against Washington and Oakland)?

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

by Ben R on Nov 24, 2009 3:23 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

so what your saying is...

since Big Ben played the whole game except the last drive and we took them to OT (you know the pathetic Chiefs) that we dont deserve the win b/c Ben was out for 4 plays of the whole game? Sorry I dont buy that and its a sorry excuse to not give a team respect. They had there chance and we beat them plain and simple and its sad if thats the way you look at it b/c your Bolts cant get it done against them

by tomahawk44 on Nov 24, 2009 7:50 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No one is saying that the Chiefs didn't deserve to win

The only games where the winning team doesn’t deserve to win is when the refs eff things up. A win is a win. A lot of us are just saying that simply beating the Steelers the way the Chiefs did is not a sign that the Chiefs are anything more than a struggling 3-7 team.

we also won

the turnover and special team battles it doesnt all come down to numbers. We made the plays when we had to thats how teams win games. The Chiefs havent been doing well at doing that this year but the last two week they have seemed to start making the big plays to win games so dont count us out. Examples. Studabakers 2 interceptions and one of them was in the red zone and the week before Mike Brown stepped it up and made two key interceptions. We will hang around this week we may not win but it wont be as easy as a lot of you think.

by tomahawk44 on Nov 24, 2009 8:44 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t have won. Making plays like that earned the Chiefs their victory. My point and I believe Wonko’s as well is that the performance just wasn’t the sort that is predictive of future victories. In general, good teams win blowouts and lose close games. Bad teams tend to do the opposite.
