Chargers Defeat Broncos 32-3, Take Over Division Lead

Hello all.  I forgot how easy Sundays are when your team wins in a blowout.

Let's start here though: the Broncos are not a great team and not a horrible one either.  They have the ability to play with the Chargers when they have a decent quarterback.  That was not the case today.  Still though, Knowshon Moreno is really good.

The Chargers running game looked great, the secondary looked good like always and the pass-rush seemed way too easy.  Offensively, the Chargers did whatever they wanted to do.  It's a shame, however, that Jeromey Clary went down with what appeared to be a serious leg injury.  Having Brandyn Dombrowski or Corey Clark at RT for the rest of the season is not something any Chargers fan is looking forward to seeing.  Kansas City, who is not as good as the Steelers made them look, and the Browns will be a good training ground for whoever takes over the spot.

Due to dinner with the in-laws, I saw only the first and fourth quarters live.  The rest has been recorded and will be watched before I write the full Bolts & Dolts tomorrow.  This is definitely one of those instances where I could use input from you guys to point me in the right direction.  Who would your Bolts & Dolts be and why?  Try to avoid the easy ones, like LaDainian Tomlinson, Mike Tolbert and Jacob Hester.

John, I told you, that you were way too overly worried about this game.

I’d be surprised in the Broncos finish the season with a winning record now. I have to say I’m surprised at how poorly prepared McD had the Broncos and how poorly he coached this game.

Also, easy Bolts? Gregory is easier than the three you mentioned. Two fumble recoveries and I can’t even count how many passes defended. Pretty much the whole team was a bolt though.

True

with the possible exception of Larry English, whose ineffectiveness up to this point is starting to worry me. That’s just nitpicky though.

So let’s make them SuperBolts. Who played GREAT?

You’re right about Gregory. He was everywhere. He moved to Nickel CB right when the winning streak started, and I do not think that’s a coincidence. I think Jammer deserves a Dolt for always getting hurt by his own teammates.

SuperBolts?

No Dolts on either side.

Offense: Starts with Norv completely and utterly outcoaching Mcd all week and continuing through the entire game plus ONE PENALTY. Rivers for perfectly sticking to the game-plan. Nate the Great for kicking all of those FGs and keeping Eddie Royal OUT of the equation. The entire Offensive Line NO SACKS and OVER 200 yards RUSHING.

Defense: Gregory. Shaun Phillips had a sack, FF, and batted down a pass at the line. There are probably more. Burnett had a good game.

I was not a fan of Turner's playcalling at the end of the first half.

2 min left, first and ten at our 20, I would rather have gone for the jugular there instead of running it up the middle three times and punting it away.

With the Bengals losing and the Pats winning

there is now a 3-way tie for the 2nd seed in the AFC and a first round bye. I have no idea how the tiebreakers shake out. Just keep winning, beat the Bengals when we play them, and we’ll have a good shot at that week off.

Pats-Cincy-SD tiebreakers

1) SD or Cincy will hold a head-to-head tiebreaker over the other. NE is out of that picture.
2) Conference record. All 3 teams have a tough road game and a softer home game against the NFC, and all 3 are 2-0. So we don’t know anything about how this will shake out, and it’s really the first tiebreaker for NE at this point.
3) Common games. NE vs. SD common opponents are: Denver, Miami, Tennessee and Baltimore. NE is 3-1 and SD is 2-2; both have one to play (NE vs. Miami, SD vs. Tenn). NE vs. Cincy common opponents are: Houston, Baltimore, Denver and New York. NE is 3-2 and Cincy is 2-2 with 1 to play.
4) SOV. No clue; too soon to say.

So we need to beat Cincinnati and win more down the stretch than New England if we want a bye round.

by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Nov 22, 2009 5:25 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Conference record is the inverse of NFC record

Same difference, but there are only 4 games to count instead of 12, and you have to remember that the worst record wins.

by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Nov 22, 2009 9:19 PM PST up reply actions

That is,

If a 12-4 AFC team has a 3-1 NFC record, well, they must have a 9-3 AFC record, no? So if some other 12-4 AFC team has a 2-2 NFC record, then that team would hold the conference tiebreaker over the first one.

by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Nov 22, 2009 9:21 PM PST up reply actions

I guess

but wouldn’t it be easier just to count the AFC wins?

Could this be the emergence of a running game?

Clearly, LT and Sproles is not the answer. Tolbert and Hester were effective today. Do they deserve more touches? Probably.

"Get on board early," Black said, alluding to, what he feels, is a crop of up-and-coming players.

I think LT and Hester as the RBs and Tolbert as the Fullback is the answer.

They obviously realized

That giving LT extra carries in garbage time probably isn’t the best way to keep him healthy. Sproles couldn’t move the football, so they sent in the bangers to make some holes and eat some clock.

You are a poor decision

Sproles takes so many shots in the return and kickers are literally scared to kickoff to him

by BFTB_zach on Nov 22, 2009 5:44 PM PST up reply actions

I disagree on Hester

I think platooning him a fullback with Tolbert is the way to go. They need an explosive back to go with LT not a guy like Hester, but signing Sproles long term is not the answer. I think there will somebody the Chargers can draft that will be the RB of the future.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

by Wonko on Nov 22, 2009 10:02 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

no.

tolbert and hester contributed nicely but fair to say that it was largely during garbage time. sproles is great in passing plays and coming off screens and one of best return man in the game, but when it comes to short yardage situations and goalline carries, LT is still the guy. his conversion rate in those situations should be his biggest contribution and how he’s measured, no longer total yards and td’s and ypc. phillip and vj and gatesy can move them up and down the field.

Do we really think Simms was as at fault as lil Hoodie treated him.

His OLine was junk on that first drive. He held the ball a little long, but that seems somewhat correctable to me. I still have faith that Simms could have been every bit as good as Orton in that game. It just may have taken him a couple of series to get going (as opposed to Orton who steadily got worse the more snaps he had to take).

I thought I read somebody's lip (might have been PR)

And they were saying it was his calf. He probably tore it or something.

by Wonko on Nov 22, 2009 9:56 PM PST up reply actions

That would make sense

I commented during the game that it looked broken, but a rolled up calf muscle would deform the leg too. Coupled with the fact they didn’t splint the leg on the field that seems like a decent guess. The blow looked more like a leg-breaker than a muscle-tearer though. I’m sure we’ll find out today/tomorrow, so we should just come up with the most gruesome medical scenarios in the meantime so that the real news will sound good by comparison.

That's what XX and the UT are saying too

Dombrowski shouldn't be too terrible at RT

I wonder if Mooch can move down the line when Nick comes back, I have no idea what other positions he was played in the past.

You know what they say

When one guy goes down, it is an opportunity for someone else to step up.

Mooch is a Guard/Center as I recall, and it is pretty unusual for those guys to be able to slide out to tackle and play in space. So I would think the same would apply to Norman as well.

by DCB on Nov 22, 2009 8:06 PM PST up reply actions

Dombrowski is the backup RT. He will play there until he gets hurt. Norman and Mooch will not play tackle unless there is an emergency. If they could, then Clark wouldn’t have been called up. Clark < Dombrowksi. The team really likes Dombrowski’s ability to play tackle.

That's why I'm hopeful that a couple weeks work

will get him experience needed to face the Dallas pass-rush.

I've got to believe

That the dropoff from Clary to Dombo won’t be as big as Hardwick to Mooch.

Lord I hope so.

I’m expecting any minute to hear that Clary has been put on IR.

Tolbert=Natrone?

I like watching Tolbert run. He needs to refine his TD dance, tho…

Dolt

Scifres. A touchback. wtf.

I’m giving one to Sproles too. He can’t find any room to run and his returns weren’t that special.

Who got the one penalty? I forgot. Whoever that was gets a dolt as well.

Someone got a facemask on the first drive of the game. Can't remember who.

We also committed a couple penalties that offset corresponding Denver ones.

Biggest Dolt by far is Dick Enberg

I rewatched the game and his announcing was pretty atrocious. Lowlights are:

- referring to the Gaslamp District as the “Gaslight.” Really unforgivable since he lives in San Diego.
- said Hester was lined up at QB when it was obviously Philip
- several times misidentified Sproles as LT and vice versa
- claimed James Holt made a tackle on a kickoff when he was nowhere near the play

And I know there’s more that I’m forgetting. That’s way too long of a list of mistakes for a pro like Dick. Now I’m reading that the Padres are talking to him to maybe join the booth. That just screams Bad Idea Jeans.

by matthewverygood on Nov 23, 2009 4:20 AM PST reply actions

Oh Yeah

He was awful. LT-Sproles were mixed up every time. He referred to Merriman stripping the ball from Simms at least 5 times. He was just terrible all game. Dolt for sure.

The worst one

Was where he noticed LT limping off the field to the sidelines and made a comment about that and then assumed he was carrying the ball on the play that took place 2 seconds later.

I say bring him in & kick the tires.

I saw him last year

He’s not in good shape.

However, an old Jon Runyan is still almost as good as Jeromey Clary. I’d check it out.

I like the idea too.

That’s a mean, veteran tackle who’s by all accounts a great teammate.

What about

L.J. Shelton? Seems like he’d be the more obvious choice. Maybe he doesn’t want to come back though.

Runyan's got San Diego roots, to some extent.

He was a part-owner of the Riptide.

Can we PLEASE draft Ali Villanueva of Army this year??? I'd mortgage a kidney for a tackle/wideout hybrid.

They're gonna fall to 3rd

Watch Oakland move to 2nd now that they have a guy at QB who knows which team to throw it to.
