Quote from Will Carroll on Wednesday
Kyle Orton’s ankle is day-to-day, but a simple ankle sprain. Expect him to play, since he’s not that mobile to begin with

It gets better
So I start inquiring in the comments about this:
ESPN is reporting that the ankle sprain is a tear. That would imply that it’s a grade II sprain. Is that what was meant by “simple ankle sprain” or were sources saying that it was a grade I when the article was written?
Him:
All sprains are tears. It’s the very definition. A sprain is a tearing of a ligament, in the same way that a strain is a muscle or tendon tearing. I don’t know how people don’t get this and that I have to say it over and over.
A SPRAIN IS A TEAR.
Me:
I had thought that based on reading all your articles, but I was shown up when someone told me that a Grade I was not a tear. I tried to follow your definition, but then I looked up the definition of a Grade I sprain almost everything I could find said that its a stretching of the ligament, while a Grade II is a tear and a Grade III is a full tear. Trust me, I’ve heard you say this many times, but it seems like there are a lot of places that disagree with the “sprain is a tear” mantra for Grade I sprains.
Him:
For more on this and why it’s difficult to say, check this out:

I’ll refer everyone especially to MCL, image (2).
No mention of the grade of the sprain that I was trying to coax out of him. Apparently he was just slapping me around while he waited to update his twitter with the info.

On some level
stretching is tearing, no?
by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Nov 20, 2009 2:44 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That seems to be what Will is trying to tell me
Although, in my material science classes I learned about things that stretched without tearing. I’m guessing that those same properties may not apply to ligaments.

That's always been my understanding as well
You can certainly stretch the ligament too far without it necessarily tearing. Ligaments are actually elastic, so they most certainly can stretch out. Stretch them out too far, and they’ll stay stretched out, and the joint is now not as stable as it should be (in this case, Orton’s ankle).
A stretched ligament that hasn’t torn? That’s a Stage I sprain.

JMcD is not as good at this as Belichick
QB Kyle Orton won’t practice Friday but “absolutely” has a chance to play against San Diego on Sunday, according to coach Josh McDaniels. Orton has been deemed “questionable.”

I'd been trying to find an opportunity to put that somewhere
And you implied that Questionable meant 50%. While the guidelines may say 50%, it obvious doesn’t mean that. I’m not really trying to be critical of you, just trying to further my own agenda and you are a pawn.

Well what I meant to say was
The chances of Orton are really probably around slim to none but McD isn’t doing a good job of keeping that a secret.

If he doesn't practice today or play...
the league is going to be pissed at him being listed as “questionable”. There are certain guidelines that need to be followed with injury reports. I believe if the player is not able to practice at all during the week, the highest he can be listed at is “doubtful”.
If McD is listing him higher than that just to screw with SD, the league will ask for copies of the Broncos practice tapes and they could fine the Broncos for not following proper protocol.

and here. Looks like they won’t even test it until Sunday morning.

It does seem like a lot of misdirection
Most coaches won’t let any player play if they don’t practice on Friday. Especially, if they play a position where that doesn’t get rotated in and out.

I only had to type “questionable doubtful probable site:www.footballoutsiders.com” into google and choose the 8th link on that page. This stuff is not hard to find people.

That is really cool data, and I’ve always been curious. Though apparently not curious enough to google questionable doubtful probable footballoutsiders and find the 8th result.

to compensate for a reduced passing attack.

We have a coach in Australia
who is famous for the number of his players who ‘catch’ the flu… (there’s also been famous instances of players getting their broken jaws re-wired in secret and playing the following week with no one outside the club knowing what had happened – one player from my team however was stupid enough to walk past the press-conference in a moon boot [for a broken foot] at the same time the coach was assuring everyone that the player was fine!)

We’re back to where we started earlier this week. We really have no idea who’s going to start!

Well I guess
Kyle Orton is a game-time decision this week. But I think he’s a game-time decision every week. The coach just looks around before kickoff: “Ah, hell. No one better showed up. Kyle? You’re in again.”
