Chris Chambers Released By San Diego Chargers

Chris Chambers

#89 / Wide Receiver / San Diego Chargers

5-11

210

Aug 12, 1978

Wisconsin

I understand his play has been poor, but after making arguably the best play of the game Chris Chambers is out on the streets.

Chris Chamber was the catalyst for the 2007 Chargers' run to the playoffs.  His production has declined since then, but he's always been fairly reliable in clutch situations and in playoff games.  Against the Raiders, Malcom Floyd took his spot as the starting WR opposite Vincent Jackson.

This makes Legedu Naanee, who has disappeared since having a good start to the season, the Bolts' new slot receiver.

Back to speculating about replacement ILBs

Zach Thomas is familiar with Wade Phillips’ D, but I’m not sure how much that counts for at this point.

What’s Derek Smith doing these days? Matt Wilhem?

I believe Wilhelm is with San Francisco. Hopefully Derek Smith is retired.

For the record

I think Zach Thomas is about as good as Wilhelm and Smith.

I’d rather have Thomas than Wilhelm or Smith, though.

Agreed

Although, Wilhelm obviously doesn’t need to be mentioned anymore since he’s a 9er.

I have to imagine it’ll be Beckwith since he’s on the PS.

I agree

But A.J. throws out a couple change-ups now and again. So far though Acee’s tweets haven’t mentioned Beckwith by name (even as a candidate) so it makes me wonder.

I doubt he’d bring in a Zach Thomas since we need help on ST. Who else is out there?

But isn’t he like 103 years old now?

32 years old

he played both OLB and ILB with the Chargers, I believe. I’d take him if he’s a leader on defense.

Meh

He was never very good in coverage either. All of Polk’s faults are Siler’s too, but Siler is younger, stronger and faster.

He’ll get monster numbers, I’m sure.

More from Acee
The primary reason for CC axe was Floyd’s emergence. Defensively and in the kicking need to get help. Will add a LB in the next few days—ka

Beckwith makes the most sense, because I believe he has a reputation as a special teams stud.

Also, Dobbins is out for a few weeks. That means Siler probably gets the start alongside Cooper against the Giants. Yikes.

Dobbins out

Basically they were comfortable enough with Legadude and Kassim as #3 and #4 WRs and needed the depth at LB

I think this is partly a function of roster construction

They would have to plan on Davis being active for most games in order to benefit from him getting additional reps. Since Osgood is on ST, he is always active and it’s just the #4 WR spot, we don’t use it that much.

Plus PR17 is confortable with him and Kassim already knows the offense like the back of his hand
Rivers says Kassim Osgood is very capable of filling in at WR and knows the offense as well as anybody

from his days in Miami. He could go anywhere. The Baltimore offense seems to be moving pretty good, and I don’t think he’s better than their top 3 guys there (Mason, Clayton, Washington).

WHOAWHOAWHOA

Do you guys not remember me asking everybody this on the game thread yesterday? I said, and I quote:

“Why do we still have Chambers? The ball goes to Gates Jackson and Floyd 98% of the time.”

And JOHN told me “Because cutting him would accomplish nothing.”

I saw it coming the whole time.

I really didn’t think they’d cut him, and pay him his whole salary, just to get an open roster spot. I thought he was worth something as a 3rd or 4th WR. Guess I was wrong.

You called it.

Not trying to brag or anything.

But i LOVED Chambers. You know, all those important playoff catches for first downs. But I’ve seen games this year where he didn’t even get THROWN to. When you think of CC, you think of a guy with amazing hands, and they weren’t utilizing him nearly enough.

He was thrown to plenty. Some games he was thrown to more than anyone else (including VJ and Gates). He just never caught the ball.

Wrong

They were utilizing him waaay too much. They’ve thrown at him over 30 times this year and he only caught 9 passes. By DVOA he was the 3rd worst WR in football this year, ahead of only Heyward-Bey and Chansi Stuckey. He was not helping us.

Amongst qualifying wide receivers, Chambers’s -84 DYAR and -49.6% DVOA ranked 79th and 80th out of 82, respectively, and he’d caught only eight of the 30 passes (27 percent) on which he was the intended receiver.

drops aren’t that much worse than not be able to get open and making your QB throw the ball away. But, obviously, they aren’t a positive either.

Dobbins Injury

Is the catalyst here. When I saw his leg snap around I thought he was done for the year. But Chambers had one grab in two games and that simply does not cut it.

Props to Brandon Siler for picking up Dobbins after he went out. You could tell that was the kinda of thing Siler said to Dobbins before they carted him off “I got your back, buddy”. Siler was a wrecking ball in the 2nd half.

Funny

After the Steelers game, everyone wanted major shake-ups on the team. Since then the Bolts have cut a starting WR, the starting SS, moved a rookie to starting SS and benched the young nickel CB (replacing him with the backup SS). How’s that for a shake-up?

Every time the team makes a big move like this and it appears to work (like with Ellison and Gregory), it gets the other players on the team fired up. It gives them the feeling that the team will do whatever it takes to win.

Definitely

This is a gutsy move in a season where a gutsy move or too seems necessary. I definitely think that (even moreso than the Hart release) this is addition by subtraction and it gives Chambers a chance to find a home on a team in need of WR depth.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

by Wonko on Nov 2, 2009 1:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

And it also seems like these shake-ups have improved our team overall. for instance, if everyone was healthy on the team, including JW and Hardwick, and those additional personell changes had been made, I think we’d be an amazing team right now.

Yes, he was worth a second rounder.

Chambers gave us a season and a half at veteran pro level; some would argue that 2007 was the best year of his career. If a team drafted two second-rounders and one of them got three productive starting seasons, that’s not bad.

It was funny watching Rivers eye the corner that was covering him.

Rivers was ready to run out of bounds if the corner decided to bump him.

by SJO on Nov 2, 2009 3:17 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yes

They joked about it in the postgame. Canepa (I think) asked if there is any variation where Rivers gets involved and everyone had a good laugh. They asked both him and LT the same thing. It got a laugh both times (they probably asked Norv too, but I didn’t see it).

It basically gives a free shot for the defense to hit Rivers. They also could choose to not cover him. Not a fan of QB as bystander in the RB direct snap plays.

that you leave the quarterback on the field when you want to disguise the formation until it’s time to line up.

Miami takes him out because they don’t care if the defense knows about it ahead of time.

On a more serious note

Let me “eulogize” a little with Chambers. I think the best thing Chambers did for the Chargers was to challenge VJ. Jackson didn’t necessarily look like he was going to become a #1, but its very possible that bringing in Chambers was exactly the motivation VJ needed to step his game up. If that’s the case, then I don’t regret having Chambers for one second.

Like a lot of players on the Chargers at the beginning of this season, I don’t regret the Chargers trading for Chambers at all. It was necessary in 2007 and it helped a lot of the young WRs (Jackson, Naanee, Floyd). I just think he held onto his starter’s spot for too long.

To me it looked like Chambers' problems were in effort rather than skill.

It was weird seeing him just stick out an arm on balls towards the sideline instead of diving for them like he used to. Or nonchalantly letting a defender bat down a ball without really trying to catch it.

by JollyWaffle on Nov 2, 2009 1:17 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I was hearing things about him in the offseason. Stories that would definitely equate to huge off-the-field distractions. I’ve never had the stories confirmed, but it would explain a lack of effort if somebody couldn’t separate on-the-field from off-the-field.

There still aren’t that many plays to go around for all these guys. It’s still mainly going to be VJ, Gates, Floyd, LT and Sproles with about 4-5 plays a game for Naane, #4 WR (Davis or KO), Tolbert, Hester, Manu and Wilson combined.

This probably isn't the right place to put this

but this post seems to be where everyone is hanging out right now.

In regards to are struggling coverage units, I have a theory. Perhaps all the players we had that used to be special team standouts have now graduated to the starting lineup, and therefore don’t play ST as much? And the current crop of young-ins aren’t as good?

We're boned.

There's also the possibility

That we are missing a couple of guys that maybe were better than we thought. Cletis Gordon and Marques Harris come to mind. Applewhite is another candidate for that. It wouldn’t surprise me that English isn’t as good as Harris or Applewhite, if for no other reason than they knew that they needed to excel in those roles to make it in the NFL.

Blowin things up like he usually does. I remember last year against NO, he just launched himself and took out like two or three Saints.

Could you let me know what it is?

I think its pretty safe to say that KO will not be a Charger in 2010, even if he did make the 2009 Pro Bowl on ST (by earning it).

It sounds to me

Like the owners will try. The Players seem to be interested in some sort of “eye for an eye” bargaining where they are happy as long as they get a concession for every thing the owners want to change. I don’t know that the owners will be content with that. There is going to be a real strong push from the owners to make the league less about equality and more about survival of the fittest (or richest).

Sigh

That’s gonna suck. PFT wrote a piece today about the players’ union realizing the implications of an uncapped year, how a lot of players will get kicked to the curb/find their salaries drop immensely once the spending floor is gone along with the cap, players who thought they were going to be free agents finding out they aren’t going to be anymore.

I’m not even clear about what the major issues between the two sides are. I hope it doesn’t turn into baseball where you’ve got a few teams at the top outspending everyone.

Football couldn't really ever become baseball

without the TV contracts changing. There will always be major revenue sharing because of that. I can’t recall the specifics, but there are other areas of revenue sharing where the big money NFL teams feel like they are losing out (jersey sales I think might be one, but there are others). I don’t think the uncapped year scenario really works for anyone involved and something will need to be done with the CBA to get past that, but the owners feel that simply renewing the old one was not in their best interest.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

by Wonko on Nov 2, 2009 3:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I knew that was true

about big money teams feel like they’re losing out. I think the Raiders are a big one of those, as they sell the most merchandise of any team in the NFL, yet they have to split the revenue with the other 31 teams.

We're boned.

by Zach (maestro876) on Nov 2, 2009 3:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure about the Raiders

I’ve heard the Cowboys, Giants, Redskins and Texans are the largest in gross revenue. However, the Texans don’t net much because they are paying for their stadium and I think the Cowboys may be in the same boat now.

I just hope they figure something out

so football stays, and it stays relatively competitive and fair, and doesn’t become the NBA or MLB.

We're boned.

by Zach (maestro876) on Nov 2, 2009 3:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

There's no chance it becomes like the NBA and probably not like MLB

Basketball games just aren’t as compelling as football to begin with (and I don’t just mean pro football and its “competitive balance”). The entire structure of the league is about the playoffs and the regular season is an afterthought (so much so that more than half the teams make the playoffs). That governs everything that happens in that sport.

I actually think MLB’s system works quite well. Their profits are good. The players are rewarded better than other sports. Both the regular season and postseason are still quite compelling. The sport is mostly a meritocracy where the teams that are run well end up doing well. You don’t really see a poorly run team make playoffs and world series’ and you don’t see a well run team finish in the cellar often.

The NFL will still have some sort of revenue sharing to keep teams from becoming completely cash poor. A little less revenue sharing may help to encourage better front office management and keep owners from taking advantage of fan loyalty. On top of that the sport is very compelling in nature and you can see that by looking at both the competitive differences between teams in the college game and the fact that market size doesn’t seem to limit attendance figures. The most likely worst case scenario in a non-revenue sharing NFL is that certain teams who are poorly run and take advantage of their current status would probably be forced to make drastic changes. But, how much worse could these teams be than some of the NFLs current sad sacks? I’d rather have the sucky teams’ owners be punished more for hiring Matt Millens (like Detroit) or not building their fan base (like Jacksonville) and maybe have to sell or move their teams to make them more competitive instead of getting constant bailouts.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

The real problem

for players is they get owned for six years. And beyond that they can franchise one and tag another; so the number of “great” free agents will go down and most will have their careers end before they can go FA anyway. The cap is largely fictive now anyway; a lot of teams don’t approach it.

I pointed out

That one problem for Osgood is that Scifres’ punts haven’t been as good so there is less time for him to break his double team. There is also the possibility that something about the old wedge helped him make plays (not sure what that would be though).

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

by Wonko on Nov 2, 2009 3:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

True

Part of the problem has been Scifres groin strain; but that doesn’t explain the kickoff returns.

I'm trying to think who would be examples of this.

It’s hard to say without knowing the exact lineups for kick and punt coverage. All I can recall is who I remember seeing around the ball when the returner is tackled. For kickoffs I’m positive that the following are out there: Cason, Osgood, Siler, English, Oliver. For punts, I’m not sure Oliver is out there, but I know Hester and Binn are. I want to say Kris Wilson is on both units. But I’m still missing 3-5 guys on each unit.
