Don't worry Raiders fans.
You can still draft a QB in the first round… of 2012.

Did they trade away their 2011 first round pick too?

I thought it was their 2011 pick
that they gave away for Seymour.

I checked
and it was indeed their 2011 first rounder they gave up for Seymour.

So then do they have a 2010 first rounder?

Well, damn
That means that Neoplatonist’s comment doesn’t make sense.
Too bad, it would have been pretty funny if it had.

No one is like Leaf
Leaf had off the field issues to match his on-the-field woes.
(IMO, his on-the-field woes were mainly inexperience and then injury related, JaMarcus is pretty much nothing like Leaf)

It always amazes me
How these teams go for the quarterback with the “big arm”. Scouts fall all over themselves for the guy who can gun the ball 50 yards downfield on a frozen rope.
You would have thought by now teams would have learned it isn’t all about the arm. Its about being able to read defenses. Its about accuracy and being able to fit the ball into tight windows. Its about game awareness and being able to convert third downs and not make negative plays.
It always makes me laugh when I would here commentators talking about Russell being able to throw the ball 60 yards from his knees. And exactly how common of a need is it to need to do that in the NFL?
Joe Montana didn’t have the strongest arm. He did all right. Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady and our own Phillip Rivers, sure they have some zip, but none are known for the “big arm”. And they are probably the four best QB’s in the league right now.
Let’s hope our rivals stay enamored with the guy with the cannon arm.

Well yeah,
But JaMarcus has a big arm. After all, thats all that really counts

The Big Arm
The idea isn’t necessarily that they would throw it down the field 60 yards, but that they could squeeze it into tight spaces by getting it by the defenders so fast that they can’t knock it away. There are also certain routes that (the deep out for example) that need a certain amount of arm strength or they end up being easy picks for the defense. Scouts love the big arm because they wishcast those throws on top of the deep ball. The thing is, unless the QB is already making those throws with his armstrength in college, then you will need to coach him up to do it. Footwork, accuracy, touch and mental wherewithal will need to be improved before the QB ever sees the fruits of that arm. Guys like Peyton Manning and Matt Ryan had all those things coming out of college and became studs. Guys like Brady and Favre took some time to learn the other stuff that would help them use their big arm. But, of course, its not a must for all systems. West Coast-style offenses don’t necessarily need the big arms. Hasellbeck, Bulger and Pennington lead franchises to the playoffs without those. And, like DCB said, there are guys like Rivers, Brees, Palmer and Warner that just maximize all their skills so that they don’t need one of the top 5 or 10 arms in the league to make “all the throws”.

Notice
That I actually include Manning and Brady in the big arm category. I think their arm strengths are terribly underrated. They can chuck every bit as well as Russell or Cutler, but they just don’t do it that often because its overkill. It’s also very effortless for them. Watch them throw the deep ball vs. Rivers or Brees. Brees and Rivers have to work a little harder to do it, not that it’s any less effective (although I’d say Rivers doesn’t hit his guys in stride quite as well as the others, so there’s a teeny, tiny accuracy issue there).
