-Is there any concern about McDaniels as a coach?

-Do you attribute any of the Broncos recent downswing to the age of veterans on defense?

-Has Moreno taken over as the #1 back? Has Buckhalter seen less carries lately?

I'll take the first stab since I'm here, I'm sure there will be disagreement though

-I don’t think there is any concern about HCMcD as a coach overall. I think that the majority of people (not just Broncoholics) believe he will have a bright career. As of recently, whether it was his fault or not we have clearly been in a skid. My personal opinion is that it appears he is trying too hard. He is afraid to let games get away and makes rash decisions when playing it safe is the way to go…..but then again what did BellyCheck do this weekend?

-As far as an aged secondary goes….and I don’t currently have the stats to show it…..I believe our secondary is still preforming at an above average level. They have INT’s, BDawk has tons of tackels, and I have yet to see anything the leads me to believe anyone (excepting may Law) has lost a step. Simply put, we have a great secondary despite the age, though this could change in the coming years quickly.

-Moreno is unequivivobaly the #1 back. He gained the title when Buck went down with an injury and has retained it to date. With his performance Sunday I don’t see that changing any time soon. Personally I would love to see a healthy, Fired up, ball protecting Hillis get in there and run the rock a bunch as well. He was our lead rusher last year after all.

Feel free to disagree Bronco Bretheren this is simply my take.

Personally, I've given up on Hillis this year

THIS YEAR, that is. His skill set is too good to ignore. But he is having serious growing pains in McDaniels’ system this year.

Pass Defense

Broncos are 12th in the league by DVOA and slightly above average (from a historical perspective, obviously 12th is above average for 2009). They seem to be holding their own. Although, I suspect a lot of that is Elvis Dumervil related, which isn’t necessarily a direct reflection of their secondary.

Maybe a better look at it would be to look at the numbers for covering each position since that takes the sacks out of it.
31st in the league against #1 WRs (ouch)
5th in the league against #2 WRs
5th in the league against “Other” WRs
15th in the league against TEs
22nd in the league against RBs.

That’s interesting. Either Champ is losing it or teams purposely line up their #1 WR against Goodman or the nickel DB a lot.

Goodman

He’s not the problem, he’s just getting picked on. He is definitely the weak link in the secondary, but that is a stellar secondary. I don’t know enough to know whether or not that is due to his age; I am inclined to think that it is not.

Something is going on because there are 30 teams in the NFL better at covering #1 WRs this year.

The strange thing is...

I did a Fanpost at MHR when we were 5-0 that addressed FO’s stats regarding the #1 WRs. Most every stat was seen as understandable and expected; the #1 WR issue was a problem then as well (27th) but we were all at a loss to explain it.

If you look at stats for #1 WRs in our first games (i.e., Ochocinco, Braylon Edwards, Randy Moss, Roy Williams), none of them had superb stats. All were average at best— certainly not 27th in the league. This was confusing to us, as it is now.

I can only suspect that their definition of #1 WR is “whoever gets the most yards”, which if true makes that stat lose credibility for me.

It has more to do with

Having “success” for a certain down and distance.

n first down, a play is considered a success if it gains 45 percent of needed yards; on second down, a play needs to gain 60 percent of needed yards; on third or fourth down, only gaining a new first down is considered success.

We then expand upon that basic idea with a more complicated system of “success points.” A successful play is worth one point, an unsuccessful play zero points. Extra points are awarded for big plays, gradually increasing to three points for 10 yards, four points for 20 yards, and five points for 40 yards or more. There are fractional points in between. (For example, eight yards on third-and-10 is worth 0.63 “success points.”) Losing four yards is -1 point, while losing 12 yards is -1.8 points. Interceptions average -6 points, with an adjustment for the length of the pass and the location of the interception (since an interception tipped at the line is more likely to produce a long return than an interception on a 40-yard pass). A fumble is worth anywhere from -1.70 to -3.98 points depending on how often a fumble in that situation is lost to the defense no matter who actually recovers the fumble. Red zone plays are worth 25 percent more for teams (and 10 percent more for players), and there is a bonus given for a touchdown.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

by Wonko on Nov 18, 2009 10:36 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Great, but how is that "success" connected to which WR is #1?

I get that pure yards are not the only measure of success (and likely the least accurate), but something like 80% of the #1 WR’s yards would need to be DVOA-successful (accourding to the definition above) in order to account for the discrepancy between DVOA stats and pure yards stats.

The #1 WR is determined

As far as I can tell by a somewhat subjective process. It’s part depth chart and part # of targets with a judgment call made by the FO staffers.

“something like 80% of the #1 WR’s yards would need to be DVOA-successful "
Why is that so hard to believe? If that’s the case, then that’s the case and it’s interesting to wonder why the Broncos are giving up such a high success rate to #1 WRs.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

by Wonko on Nov 18, 2009 10:58 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It's possible this is definitely a problem for us

But honestly, I don’t understand it because there is too much I don’t know about the stats (i.e., the #1 WR designation) and too much about the stats I don’t see with my eyes.

Started an unscientific sampling

Patriots game: Moss definitely didn’t do much, but the one catch he had was a big one and I’m guessing that since they only threw at him a few times that this could be a positive day DVOA-wise. Too of the incompletions were on third down, so maybe not. It’s close.

Chargers game: VJ definitely had his share of good plays. Obviously, the TD was a successful play. He got 17 yards on 2nd and 21 and the following play drew a PI on 3rd down. Both of those are pretty successful. He got 8 and 18 yards on two first and 10 catches. And he had one incompletion. That’s definitely a game working against the Broncos DVOA-wise. The PI and the 18 yard catch were against Goodman. The incompletion and the 17 yard catch were against Champ. I’m not sure about the others.

Baltimore Ravens: Not much going on here. Mason got a TD and another successful catch. He had one incompletion and 2 unsuccessful catches. The TD was a 20 yard catch on 3rd and 8, which is huge. Overall that is definitely a better game for the opposing #1 than the Patriots, but probably not as good as the Chargers. Definitely, not a mark in the Broncos favor (remember this is a rate state, not a cumulative stat)

Cleveland Browns: This one is gonna hurt. Braylon Edwards is prone to getting the drops and doesn’t keep a high catch percentage. But, in this game he was thrown at 7 times and 6 of them went for 1st downs including a 3rd down catch (3rd and 9, went for 14 yards, ouch). All but one of those catches (a 5 yard catch on 2nd and 4) were greater than 10 yards.

Washington Redskins: This is probably one of those ambiguous games. Santana Moss could be called the #1 by seniority, but he is so quiet this season it makes you wonder if they could call Randle El the #1. Moss did absolutely nothing successful in this one. Randle El had 3 catches that all went for 1st downs (including a 3rd and 4 that went for 26 yards) and 1 incompletion.

Thanks!

1. Some. There is a segment of the Bronco population that was rabidly anti-McDaniels to begin with, have only grudgingly accepted him before, and are quick to point blame now. The more rational elements are putting blame elsewhere. However, I would also echo DenBronx that I feel he is struggling with effective play calling

2. No. Not at all. The age is only an issue in the secondary, which is still playing very very well. The defensive issues are vs. the run (which is mainly on the line) and teams running the hurry-up, not allowing substitutions (again, mainly on the line).

3. Effectively, he did so right about the time we last played you. He has been steadily getting mroe carries all season long, and right about Week 5 is when he started to eclipse Buck. With few exceptions, that trend has continued. It is clear McDaniels likes Moreno very much, and values our running game as a key part of our success. We have had the best success running Moreno up the gut 15+ times, and Buckhalter on screen passes and swings 5-10 times.

McD in NE

It’s not like he ran guys 20+ times all that much with the Patriots. I suspect that the split in touches is by design. After Corey Dillon left NE, it was never really easy to tell who the #1 RB was on the team.

by Wonko on Nov 18, 2009 10:15 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

A lot of that was due to Maroney not panning out

and no one reliable to take his place. Plus, the Pats substituted RBs based on situation and/or package. McDaniels made no secret from the beginning that he signed Buck for his versatility (meaning, doing nearly everything well) and drafted Moreno for the same.

How is the DL holding up?

I was very surprised how effective the Denver D-line was in the early season with nothing but rookies and nobodies. Have they started to wear down or suffer injuries, or are they a part of the team that’s held even during your skid?

by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Nov 18, 2009 10:09 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

They're performing adequately

Right now, they’re about where most (rational/informed) Bronco fans thought they would be during the preseason: good, serviceable, but not great.

Their strength in the early going was multifaceted, but I would say it boiled down to 1) lack of scheming by opposing teams; 2) frequent roation and/or packaging playing to their strengths; and 3) confidence. As a side note, Elvis Dumervil was getting held far less.

(1) is not happening any more, (2) is being negated by no-huddle/hurry-up, and (3) is still there but is tenuous. Injuries really aren’t an issue on the line, although Ryan McBean has proven to be more significant than nearly everyone thought.

Holding

Maybe it’s just due to a coincidence, but I’ve mostly only seen blatantly obvious holding calls made this year. Sure, there’s a ticky-tack one here and there. But, without having some numbers to look at, I’m guessing that holding around the league is down and I’ve got to assume it’s not because offensive lineman are holding less.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

+1

It looks pretty bad this year all around. I even saw no calls with our offensive line that I thought were pretty obvious.

Different answer

The DL is holding up, but barely so…our schemes have been seen now and offenses are adjusting to it. I don’t see much changing from our side so we are getting beat. These guys are solid, but no superior…and when teams go no-huddle (a fad of the past few games) it has led to our guys getting worn out…see any of the 2nd halves from the last three loses by the Broncos.

No-huddle is part of it, to be sure

I also think that it’s due to the playcalling on offense: getting away from the run, not converting 3rd downs and giving the defense time to rest.

for what it's worth

McD and a couple of other guys referred to this and I saw some of it myself on the Rewind – the Broncos have suddenly stopped filling and holding their gaps. I have no specific idea as to why, but it’s been pretty obvious. It did happen when McBean went down, and there might be a connection – right now, it’s just something that is

How confident do you feel heading into this game?

Curious because both teams are headed in opposite directions. Also, it seems to be completely different from the first time we played where you guys had all the momentum and not really a lot for us.

Not confident

We are on a three game skid. I’m not confident in this team with the way they played the last three games. There has been some HUGE room for improvement in all three phases over the past three loses.

That being said, this is a great game for a football fan…probably will decide the division. I see it as an opportunity for our team to EARN our way to the playoffs. We need to beat SD this game to be contenders….if not we are on our way to a mediocre team.

Confident?

Not really much. That’s not necessarily due to your prowess (although you do have some strong weapons) — it’s more on our struggles.

I do think we have a very very good chance to win, since the Redskins game could be seen as a wake-up call and it is at home. Plus, you guys are more of a finesse team (I hate using that word, but I think it applies to us) like we are, and we match up well.

(in all seriousness, do you think Orton’s injury is going to hamper his game at all? because i think i speak for many in Bolt Nation when i say that i will salivate if the announcer says “Chris Simms is entering the game for the Broncos.” He is the opposite of awesome.)

Presssure.

If the Charger defense puts pressure on the Bronco QB, neither one will be awesome. Philip Rivers, on the other hand, can function with quite a bit of pressure coming at him.

I'm not sure that we "liked them" as much as we liked the change from the white and blues.

The broncos are orange. They should have orange jerseys as their primary jersey and not the alternate. The brown was an interesting uniform. I’ll leave it at that.

However, we were undefeated with those socks and haven’t won since we put them away after the Chargers game. Coincidence????

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

by kentuckybronco on Nov 18, 2009 5:50 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm with you. I wasn't a fan of the brown, but Gaffney and Marshall and Peterson did some cool things with the socks.

Marshall had a zigzag pattern. Peterson had the barbershop poles, but he had one leg spinning clockwise and the other leg spinning counterclockwise. Gaffney had the barbershop poles but they both went the same way.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Do you think the fact that Simms is a lefty will cause issues?

Now it becomes your RT protecting his blind side, not Clady. I read a McDaniels transcript where he said nothing would change if Simms starts.

Related question:

What do you think of Polumbus? Is he up to the task? I’d say we have our concerns about Dombrowski, but then again, we have our concerns about Clary, too.

by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Nov 19, 2009 10:45 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

You're right about McD not changing anything.

I think we’d all rather have Ryan Harris as our starting right tackle, but he is still injured. That leaves us with Tyler Polumbus. I guess this will end up answering Neoplatonist Bolthead’s question, as well.

Tyler Polumbus has played well in the last few weeks. The tackle positions are not going to be the problems of the broncos offensive line. The real struggles that we have had have come up the middle. The scapegoat of the offensive line, so far, has been Ben Hamilton. He’s been knocked on his butt a few times this season and hasn’t held his blocks as well as the other offensive linemen.

The best thing about the broncos line is depth at the tackle position. We have two great starters in Clady and Harris, who are both young players. Throw in Tyler Polumbus and we are good to go at tackle. The guard and center positions are a different story. With Hochstein (9th season) (Hamilton as a backup in his 10th season) and Weigmann in his 14th season, we have two aging starters. We drafted Seth Olsen to hopefully turn into a starter in the near future, but we are going to need at least two more offensive linemen for the interior in the draft or sometime this offseason.

Simms is definitely shocking to watch because of the lefty release. It all seems backwards, to me. However, that shouldn’t affect how our line blocks. Regardless of if we have a right handed quarterback or a left handed quarterback, the line still needs to keep a nice pocket for the QB to throw out of.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

by kentuckybronco on Nov 19, 2009 11:55 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No problem

This comes up a lot, Buck, but the fact is that the plays and the protections are unchanged whether the QB is right or left handed.

Moreno/Buckhalter in '09

by Emmett Smith on Nov 19, 2009 12:43 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I guess my real question

should have been do you trust your RT to protect Simms blind side?

Plays may not differ much nor does the pocket – that I know. But a QB’s blind side DOES make a difference. That side is more vulnerable to “attack” & is the side that is usually their strongest for rollouts. If you feel comfortable with Polumbus, that answers my question.

Thanks.

Left Handed QB

What I think might be interesting from a psychological standpoint is how will a QB who hasn’t started in the NFL for a while feel about now having Merriman rushing right at him. When he’s at your back you can put your trust into your OL to get him blocked and possibly put him out of your mind for a bit, but I wonder if it makes you move your feet a little when a former All Pro is right in your face and looks like he might beat his man.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

by Wonko on Nov 19, 2009 4:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Good Point

But Merriman, while playing better when he has been healthiest — against the poor Chiefs and Raiders and the above-average Giants, has done very little when the Chargers only rush 4. Rivera’s going to have to be willing to blitz — to beat either Simms or Orton. That sounds a bit pathetic, but it’s true: our defense is mediocre — no two ways about it.

With a healthy Orton, if the Broncos play to their capabilities, they beat the Chargers D, unless the D takes chances and they pay off…. Even with an injured Orton and/or Simms in there, we’d better not go too conservative and think our D will be good enough.

Now this is just that match-up; the Chargers offense SHOULD have the advantage, but they’ve yet to play well for a whole game. If they ever do, they could be scary-good.

by jctess on Nov 20, 2009 1:41 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I know

I wasn’t talking about how Merriman was playing. I was talking about intimidation factor. Players don’t necessarily look at stats to change their perception of a player. For example, Chris Chambers kept getting double coverage last year even after it was painfully obvious that VJ was the #1 target and #1 threat. People in the game will often their perceptions rule over reality.

So I think its interesting to think about how Simms will perceive Merriman coming right at him.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

by Wonko on Nov 20, 2009 10:17 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

True: Simms could be intimidated by Merriman even though he shouldn't be.

Come on, Shawne, prove me wrong!

Rivers really is getting more and more impressive in terms of hanging in there in the pocket. Earlier in the year he was holding it too long too much (thus his early fumbles); but he and Norv and the entire offense are working better together now to at least avoid big plays to the downside. It’s knowing your personnel, being comfortable with everything, and being in rhythm…. And Rivers’ height really helps, too.

So if Rivera calls a good game, either Simms or Orton should be made to feel pretty uncomfortable out there and could very well get intimidated. Simms, because — even though he will have taken all the reps in practice this week, he hasn’t started an NFL game in years; and Orton, because he’d be out there with an ankle which is clearly less than 100% and won’t have practiced all week.

by jctess on Nov 20, 2009 11:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That'a different - and very good - question

Polumbus is a good young player. He hasn’t had a lot of first team reps, prior to Harris going down. If Harris was there, my answer would be an unqualified ‘yes’. But you raise a good point – he’s not.

Tyler Polumbus will turn out well, I suspect, but there is a weakness there, even so. Much like many young O-line players, he needs practice, experience and time to develop the communication and physical timing that will let the line consistently achieve at a high level. Does he have that yet? Probably not, to be fair. Still – he’s a very good young player who should do better each week, and that’s good, since Harris will probably miss a lot. It’s something that I’m sure the Chargers will be trying to exploit, though. Should be fun to watch that set of contests.

If....

The Broncos succumb to weakness and give us the division again, will the trade of Cutler and the way JMcD handled the whole situation be blamed as the major reason for a second mid season collapse? If not what would or could be blamed? IF it were to happen? Hypothetically speaking of course.
