San Diego Chargers Defeat Philadelphia Eagles, Tie for 1st in AFC West
Whew, that was an odd game. The offense looked great, even the rushing offense, but the defense played soft all game. It was almost a copy of the team that went 2-2 to start the season instead of the Chargers squad that has won it's last 4 games.
Either way, the San Diego Chargers coaching staff went into this game with a plan to stop the big plays, hold the Eagles to FGs and score TDs with Philip Rivers and LaDainian Tomlinson. That plan worked, and the Broncos losing to the Redskins was just icing on the cake. The winner of next week's mega-huge game will not only be alone in 1st, but they'll have a full game lead and the Chargers' next two opponents are the Chiefs and Browns. This has huge, huge, HUGE potential.
Although I have some clear people in my mind for Bolts & Dolts tomorrow, your input in the comments is more than welcome. Help to make sure I don't leave anybody out.

Winning out
After the last two games, I really feel like we might win out. I think the Dallas and Cinci games are the only tough ones, but I think we have a good chance of ending up 13-3…

Didn't the Broncos-Redskins game teach us
Just the Broncos-Bills tilt last year. Don’t count your wins before they hatch.
Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.
I'm counting
sort of. Besides, I don’t have a whole lot of influence in how the games actual go. My over-confidence should not actually harm the Chargers chances to win…
I just feel that every game from here on is winnable. I didn’t feel like that two+ weeks ago.
Plus, I think LT may have just gotten the jolt he needs to start off on a Rocky 2-esque emergence from his funk. If so, we may need to give a Bolt to LTT.

Every game winnable? Yes. All wins? Maybe, maybe not.
Two super-important games here: win them both, and the playoffs are there for the taking, with a bye round possible. Lose them both, and it’s a desperate hunt for the sixth seed. Split, and it’s a fight for the fourth seed.

First Place Chargers
Offense:
Bolts: Rivers, LT, LegaDude (big 3rd down catches and TD)
Dolts: VJ (1 catch),
Defense:
Bolts: Uhhhh, Siler accidentally had a sack once.
Dolts: Everyone unless they were in the red zone. 4 whiffed INTs, ZERO pass rush Merriman (1) and Phillips(2) combine for 3 tackles (though Phillips had that one really good one), Mcnabb throws for over 400, nobody can stop Avant even with Jackson out of the game…

I have to say
I am extremely impressed with this Chargers team. After losing to Denver following a bye, going down 3.5 games, and this stretch of games coming up, I thought 8 wins at best, and Denver looked like world-beaters.
The team has really responded well to adversity. We are not boned. We’re looking very good.
We're boned.

the deal was win two of three, including the Denver game. They have not won the Denver game.
That was assuming Denver beat Washington, though.

Since the schedule came out
I gotta think Dallas-San Diego gets flexed, with an outside chance at Cincy-SD.
Also, you gotta remember that CBS and Fox have dibs on a certain number of games where they can deny the flex. For all we know NBC asked last week if they could flex the Broncos-Chargers and CBS played their dibs card. It’s all very technical.

1st quarter
The 1st quarter D was great. We forget about it because they were so bad the rest of the game, but that and the red zone stops were what put them up enough to have that second half strategy work.
The defense
before the complaints about the defense come pouring in…..I think the defense did a great job, and I think that was all a part of the game plan.
I believe Rivera’s philosophy was to stop big plays down the field (which they did) and let the offense have the 10 yard crossing routes all day until they got into the red zone. With the Chargers’ offense, holding the defense to FGs instead of TDs is a recipe for victory.
I could bash Rivera for a lack of blitzes or too much zone, but in reality more man-to-man and more blitzes would’ve equaled big plays for DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. You can’t expect to shut everybody down by overpowering them. Some offenses you need to contain instead of trying to stop them.
I won’t exactly give it them a Bolt, but I will say that the defense and the defensive coaches played according to a gameplan that worked in the end.

Saw the db blitz a few times I think
but yeah, not much pressure. Maybe because we were playing with such a large point differential most of the game?
This blog has devolved into UT like, uncerebral blabber
SM and SP both had injury issues
And Philly’s OL was under a lot of pressure to prove they could get it done.

But they were missing their Left Tackle
When teams are playing without their left tackle the pass rusher should be embarrassed if he can’t get a sack.
Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.
I still don't think Ron and Norv
Would be that happy with how porous we were after the first few stops.
I wonder how much the health of Phillips and Merriman played into this? Tucker being out might have cost a bit as well, though I’d hoped this was going to give English the chance to step up a bit more.

This defense was fine when it really counted.
Both teams marched downfield for five scores. One team got three field goals and two TDs and one got four TDs and one FG. McNabb is very hard to pick, and the Chargers picked him once and almost picked him several other times.
You could just tell as the game was going that Philly would keep racking up the yards but couldn’t turn them into points with any regularity, and SD would let that happen. I don’t think this was a bad defensive performance at all.
by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Nov 15, 2009 5:35 PM PST up reply actions
Definitely a "good enough" performance
But, still some things to work on. Especially if we want to pound Denver into the mile high dirt next week.
Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.
I agree John
I think Rivera schemed what we saw. Avant might have had a bigger day than expected, but neither Jackson nor Maclin hurt us badly.
Looked to me like we were much more concerned about containing McNabb than putting a lot of pressure on him. I don’t care what his stats were – stats don’t win games.

Technically not tied for first place
As per the tiebreaker rules, the Broncos are still actually ahead of the Chargers and alone in the first place (the first tiebreaker is head-to-head games, and the Broncos have that 1-0 at the moment).
Win a game, win another game...
… and Denver will have to beat KC, KC and Oak, or beat two of them, beat Indy, NYG and Philly, and hope SD goes 2-3 down the stretch. Not that the Donks can’t beat the Chiefs or Raiders, but they have to sweep, which might be very hard. Basically, whoever loses next week will have to win out to win the division.

That the Eagles break DVOA year after year. They get tons of big plays that are usually associated with elite teams, yet somehow find ways to lose by doing things that don’t normally cause teams to lose. It’s really odd.

My favorite Charger made an interception in the endzone to cap off the win. I believe my man Cromartie deserves the game ball. I LOVE THE CRO!

Another Bolt
You should ALSO put down Andy Reid as a bolt. Without his FIFTYFIVE pass play calls, and his waste of his last timeout before the two minute warning while we had the ball, that could have been completely different. All we had to do was get that last first down then kneel. (That couldnt happen though) so we got to win the cool way.
