O-Line

We’ve had our share of O-Line struggles due to injuries this year, but what’s the sate of yours at the moment? As bad as the Oakland game or has it gotten better? What’s the likelihood Jason Peters is healthy for this game? And how worried are you with the re-emergence of Merriman and Phillips as a result?

by gman87 on Nov 10, 2009 2:18 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

It’s gotten much healthier since that Oakland game. Starting LG Too Herremans is back, Jason Peters is back. They’ve done a good job with edge rushers, but have been susceptible up the middle.

Peters got banged up during the Dallas game after his ankle was rolled up on… but he came back to play in that game and basically shut down Demarcus Ware, so I’d be pretty surprised if he wasn’t able to play this week.

Which injured players are out?

Will Peters play? Will Samuel play? Will Hobbs play? Will Westbrook play?

How are these injuries going to hurt you?

We're boned.

Like I said Peters came back during the Dallas game so I would assume he would. Samuel also came back during that game so I would say yes. I’m not sure about Hobbs, but he’s been the 4th corner so… I don’t know that it would matter that much. They keep saying Westbrook will play, but then again they said that last week. So who knows?

Andy Reid said on Monday that he’d play unless something unforeseen happens.

Hobbs has just been put on Injured Reserve.

Only if we treat McNabb like Pennington.

He’ll play a couple snaps. 2 or 3.

The Chargers defense has had success with stopping long passes, but has had little success with stopping strong running teams. Do you think this will pose a problem for the Eagles?

I don’t know. The Eagles offense has been so hit or miss this year. They’re always going to look to throw the ball first and if McNabb is feeling it that day then I think they generally can be successful against anyone. But they’ve been very up or down this year. We can usually see if McNabb is crisp and accurate before the end of the first quarter.

by JasonB on Nov 11, 2009 1:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

What is the most vulnerable aspect of your defense? In other words, where would it be advantageous to attack when on offense ( I promise I won’t tell Norv!)?

By the way, I am very jealous about how well your rookies have played thus far (especially McCoy, not to mention Maclin).

Defense, Im talking to you! You want to kill this Osweiler fella...Come on defense, FOCUS god dammit!

I respect you Juju, you and your gorgeous brilliance

Definitely attack the linebackers with underneath passes to the tight end. Our linebacking group has been decimated by injury this season, starting with the tough loss of MLB Stewart Bradley, who was supposed to be a stop-gap on defense for us this season.

a question i like to ask..

who is the most underrated player on defense? most underrated on offense? and on special teams?

also, who creates the biggest mismatch?

thanks, appreciate it!

and Trent Cole is not an acceptable answer. Everybody knows he’s a beast.

Maybe I have to get used that… I’ve been so used to calling him the most underrated Eagle for years.

I’ll say probably one of the outside LBs Akeem Jordan or Chris Gocong. Neither guys rack up huge amounts of stats, but they do everything asked of them well and are both key reasons the Eagles defense has been so good against the run for the past couple years.

by JasonB on Nov 11, 2009 1:20 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh and Brent Celek on offense. He’s having an absolute breakout year. He’s probably been the most consistent and surprising part of the offense.

by JasonB on Nov 11, 2009 1:24 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

daseaun jackson..

will jackson play..is he 100%..will he take the kicks on kickoff’s and punts??

by vasquez_kristopher on Nov 10, 2009 6:18 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah he’s fine. He’ll be returning punts. Jeremy Maclin will probably be returning kickoffs.

by JasonB on Nov 11, 2009 1:21 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t really. I guess I was hoping he’d be a big red zone presence thanks to his size. I thought he’d become a pretty important part of the offense, but then again I didn’t forsee Brent Celek having the kind of break out year he’s having.

by JasonB on Nov 11, 2009 1:23 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

How has the defense changed since Jim Johnson (RIP)? Are there noticeable differences in scheme, or are any new weaknesses in the defense due to personnel and injuries?

by cowbell on Nov 11, 2009 8:45 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I've got a buddy who is an Eagles fan

and he has been anti-McNabb for a very long time. I assume this is pretty universal.

Is this because of Eagles’ fans inability to do math and realize how high their winning percentage is under McNabb, or are most Eagles fans just longing for the pre-McNabb days when you used to get smoked by the Cowboys/Redskins/Giants every stinking year?

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Nov 11, 2009 9:38 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

It’s about 50-50, from what I’ve seen.

The simple fact is, and this often gets overlooked, McNabb is not very good in the 4th quarter when the team is losing. He’s not John Elway or Philip Rivers. He has tremendous tools, but lacks a bit of heart.

Fortunately for him

He’s really good and has a good defense so they have a lot of games where they don’t need to worry about him playing at an elite level in the 4th quarter.

I guess I should add the caveat to my previous comment

This was true for him until this year. He has consistently been in the top 15 in DVOA and was even higher in the early 00s (especially 2004, which was one of the greatest seasons of all time, it just happened to be in a year where Manning also had one of the greatest seasons of all time). This year, his DVOA is negative. Maybe that’s injury, maybe that’s age, but he’s definitely struggling out there.

by Wonko on Nov 11, 2009 10:50 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Oops

That 2004 comment was a little off. I think I was recalling an article written half way through that year that was talking about how McNabb, Culpepper and Manning were on pace for 3 of the greatest seasons of all time. Well, McNabb fell off a bunch, Culpepper ended as just great and Manning’s still ended as historic. So, it seems I’ve given McNabb too much credit, although it was still a damn fine season (on par with what Cutler, Pennington and Warner did last year).

There is a rift between Eagles fans who appreciate McNabb, and those that want to move on and see what we have with Kevin Kolb.

Those that appreciate McNabb realize just how hard it is to find a good QB in the NFL, and they know that Reid/McNabb have been a successful tandem over the years. They don’t see a need to replace a quarterback who knows the system, and has proven that he can win in that system. Either that, or they are old enough to remember the pre-McNabb era and don’t want to go back.

Those that are anti-McNabb are tired of his inconsistent play and confusing tendencies. It’s not that these people are spoiled – it’s just that they’ve seen the same mental lapses time and time again, and they have grown frustrated. You can only be a great QB for so long in this league, and these people are starting to question if that era has passed for McNabb. It doesn’t help that Kevin Kolb looked competent in our offense for a few games this season.

Also, if I had to guess I would say the McNabb:Kolb ratio is somewhere around 70:30

How much of the eagles 4th quarter lapses

do the fans attribute to McNabb vs. Reid?

Lombardi from the NFP loves to point out Reid’s lack of game management skills. On one hand, it’s hard to argue with Reid’s sucess, but on the other hand, I wonder how McNabb would do with a coach who consistently made good decisions in the last 5 minutes of the halves…

by Stephen (shaynes41) on Nov 12, 2009 12:28 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah you’re pretty much on the right track. I would say it’s a blend of the two, but my personal opinion is that Reid’s overall 4th quarter mentality is more costly to us than McNabb’s final drives are.

McNabb has had a decent amount of 4th quarter drives, it’s just that people don’t remember them because it doesn’t fit their “world view” of what McNabb is, or because our defense might allow the go-ahead touchdown and cost us the game. Reid’s mistakes, on the other hand, are much more common, widespread, and damaging in the 4th quarter.

I read that if he was out today it was going to be because of his ankle and not the concussion…and the ankle isn’t supposed to be bad enough to keep him out.

BUT

Eagles CB Joselio Hanson suspended 4 games by the NFL for a banned substance and left tackle Jason Peters not practicing for the Eagles today

Yikes

Missing a Wednesday practice when you’re an important player with an injury is very normal. Extra day of rest for Peters.

The Hanson suspension is huge though. I think that leaves them with 2 corners (Samuel and Brown)…..

Yeah that’s a concern. They’re going to have to find some corners somewhere. I’d expect that Macho Harris or Quintin Demps, who are both safeties that played CB in college, will see some time there.
