Outside of staying at the Q, I think the downtown site makes the most sense.

Sounds like there is some momentum here. Escondido has broken off talks because they see Downtown as a more likely destination. The mayor sounds optimistic and they are getting creative on the financing front.

Let's get this thing done!

This is a great idea

Parking is already there, the only problem really is it is going to be a HUGE PAIN getting to the game.

I think it'd be okay

if only because people going to the 4pm game would definitely start filtering into downtown at noon and then walking.

The good outweighs the bad in this situation for me, by a longshot.

What are these 4pm games

of which you speak?

We play football at one o’clock around here, son.

Damn

you’re right. Well everyone will go downtown at 10am then.

It's really easy to park and get around downtown on weekends

If the Chargers have any Monday or Thursday night tilts at 5 pm, then all hell will break lose.

it would be much easier to get to games in downtown

than at qualcomm… which only has three entrances and one trolley station. Mon/Thur games will be tough though… and tailgating won’t quite be the same

by truheeyo on Nov 10, 2009 4:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

but just imagine a game when the Padre's play too.... that would be chaos..

still i think its a great idea trolley’s right there and people can get on the ferry or a boat taxi and park across the bay at Coronado Im just tryna figure out where the spot is. It just makes more sense to have it there where all the bars and hotels are and the clubs are right there to enjoy the rest of the night so i hope it works out

Don't Worry

The schedule won’t allow it, unless the Padres make the playoffs. So don’t worry.

by Jonny Dub on Nov 10, 2009 4:05 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I like it!

The train and trolley station being so close make it easier to avoid bringing your car into downtown. I have family who take the coaster down from the OC too. The downtown location is ideal for them.

Great location

I’ll believe it when they start digging. I’m still not sold that Dean really wants to stay as much as he wants it to look that way.

As big of a Repub donor as he is, why was there not even an attempt to block the bill exempting the City of Industry site from environmental impact regs? Seems a little suspect to me …. unless perhaps Dean expects a quid pro quo.

Wonder what the PSL’s will cost in a new stadium?

Why would he block?

That City of Industry bill is a bargaining chip, and obviously it’s worked. It was a clear “We’re ready to go if you don’t want us anymore” and obviously it light a fire under the city and it’s officials.

The City of Industry is an empty threat

Everyone knows that the Spanos’ don’t want to sell part of the team in order to move there and Ed Roskie doesn’t want to bring a team there without partial ownership.

was that the team

that Kenau Reeves was the QB of?

I’m not sure how good a QB Reeves was but Gene Hackman was quite a Coach. Took over the avengers after leading Hickory to the state title. A real renassance man.

Actually, Keanu Reeves plays for the Washington Sentinels. The Avengers are (or were?) an Arena League team that is (was?) quite good.

That movie is awesome though. I personally like “San Diego Stallions” quite a bit.

What MAY have lit the fire

is finally getting Aguirre’s contentious & clueless ass out of office & more substantive talks with Escondido. As for whether or not Dean might deal w/Roski regarding partial ownership ….. does anyone here have Dean’s ear to get that straight from him? Bueller?

Again – proof is in the pudding. When the dirt gets turned over, I’ll believe. Until then, it’s just more talk & pandering.

If the thunder don't get ya then the lightning will!!

by Buck Melanoma on Nov 11, 2009 4:21 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The ownership thing is a big unknown, but not just because nobody has publicly declared anything on it.

I don’t think it was long ago, maybe 2-3 years ago, Dean Spanos went on record saying that his family loved owning the team and they were not interested in selling any part of it to anybody for any purpose.

At the same time, apparently Mr. Roski and Alex Spanos are long-time friends….so that might be a difference maker.

Anyways, it’s good to see talks and ideas instead of nothing.

Good location

I’m just nervous about how this is going to be paid for. I’m still fuzzy on why the Chargers rejected the idea of building another stadium next to Qualcomm and then demolishing QC. Anyone have the facts on that?

by ArksnBolts on Nov 10, 2009 2:28 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I imagine it might be back on the table now. The main issue with the current site was that the Chargers wouldn’t be able to build their profitable community around it and therefore wouldn’t be able/willing to fund the stadium themselves. I think the main issue with that site in the past was “The city is unwilling to give us a dime.” It seems like that may no longer be the case.

by John (obviousman) on Nov 10, 2009 3:22 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Did you read the article?

The city is still unwilling to give a dime. The downtown site offers certain “redevelopment” incentives that the Mission Valley site does not. That’s why the push is there. As for the “profitable community” part, that has pretty much been a pipe dream for the Chargers since the economy went in the tank. They lose more money than they’d make if they tried to do that.

I've always wanted the Chargers to move downtown.

This is like the best case scenario for me. I just think it would be so cool to have the baseball and football parks close together, like they do in Pittsburgh.

by JollyWaffle on Nov 10, 2009 4:20 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

No, Pittsburgh works fine

Philly’s stadiums are close, but not downtown.

Other cities that work are Cincy, St. Louis, Kansas City, Seattle, Detroit (those two are the closest, a roided up HR could hit Ford Field) and if I really want to stretch the definition of close Cleveland (it’s a decent walk, but still walkable). Kansas City and Detroit wouldn’t count as downtown though.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

by Wonko on Nov 11, 2009 4:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

i also thought that around 25% of season ticket holders come from orangecounty / los angeles. wouldn’t bringing a new stadium even more south lose the potential fan bases, ticketholders, and seasonholders from the oc/la area.

i am in the minority that i hope the chargers move to LA b/c i live there.

Moving the stadium south might hurt that, but I think being closer to a coaster stop evens it out a bit. It’s not like downtown is a great deal further south. If anything, the trip from LA/OC would probably be about the same by car coming down the 5. It’s equally far south than it is to go east on the 8.

Certainly hasn’t hurt the Dodger fan attendance at Padres games. If anything its increased since the move.

that is true.

i’m not sure where i heard this. generally speaking, i thought the chargers were having a tough time selling the luxury boxes and were trying to get potential holders from LA/OC area, but still had a tough time selling them (b/c it was far. and a number of other assorted reasons).

p.s. getting out of the Q is such hot garbage. i would imagine it even more of a hassle getting out of downtown.

Getting out of downtown isn't so bad

At least there are multiple ways out and a grid of streets to divert traffic. At the Q, 80% of the traffic has to get onto Friars Rd and then much of that onto the 15 no matter if you are going North, South, East or West. Downtown has the 163, the 5 (where you can go N or S and get on from different entrances) and the 94. Its a pretty nice setup. On top of that you can always go somewhere in the gaslamp and catch another game with a tasty brew (and if you head to the Tilted Kilt, some tasty babes). Or there’s a bowling alley, or there’s pool halls. Not to mention a ton of people already live downtown. And the trolly, the Coaster, buses cabs, pedicabs, hotels. You could take a freaking boat if you wanted to.

luxury boxes?

Have you ever stayed in the luxury boxes at Qualcomm? They should be a tough sell; they’re terrible. I’m sure the allure of a new stadium in a more exciting part of town will make that a moot point.

So the plan is to take the money $$$ from Redevelopment, Your meaning HUD federal money or some other government funding. That money should be used to build.. Low Income housing in the San Diego Area, that is not being built. Anyway, since your not building it, and feel that a Stadium is what you desire than have it.
1. You will lose more American’s. Folks born here in the USA. They are established, and can not afford to be re-established in San Diego. If they could they would stay in the area, and they aren’t able to.
2. Realize that El Cajon in the past 4 years has changed and now is almost all folks from the Middle East. They get the support to be here. Before you displace.. businesses, and people think! Is a football team worth it? What will you gain?
Things are not like they were in 2003. The climate of San Diego has changed a lot.

Interesting comment on El Cajon. The microcosm of what is going to happen in the US when we start to import mass refugees from Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan soon.

We’ll bring over even more unproductive sidewalk sweepers to take our social welfare system into a lower hole than the Mexican illegal’s have.

El Cajon has been taken over by Middle Eastern immigrants that operate liquor stores, buffets and littlie food places. They don’t operate Amtek Straza or the great business El Cajon thrived on.

Way to go US. Way to go El Cajon. You are now an Islamic sanctuary. Two pilots from the aircraft bombing of the world trade towers were form some d-bags that lived not far away in a sleeper cell leader’s home in Lemon Grove.

I guess I wonder why it doesn’t bother the folks in office here in California, Ah San Diego County, and City are not bothered by this FACT. No one is speaking up or out about the change that is has and will continue to take place in El Cajon….. an move to other parts.
They have to keep the numbers up because the Government provides money to an area by the amount of people it has. I just wish my words would make a difference. Not like I can afford to live in the area anymore. There is just no work, and I can’t get welfare. I am an American. I can’t say that San Diego City has built any middle income or upper lower income housing in years.

With enough number of high-caliber stadiums in town someday San Diego can even host the Olympics. When the Great Wall of China was first considered and built it was considered the Emperor’s excess and extravagance. Now it’s the Wonder of the world.

We’ll be all gone someday but the magnificient stadiums will foreever remain as symbols of our social and engineering progress …well… until our children would build something even bigger and better anyway.

Let’s go for it.

Kudos to the Mayor Sanders! He knows getting business into San Diego is key victory for jobs. Now if the convention center is expanded as planned along with the stadium, San Diego can soak up big tourist dollars as well — Super Bowls, major sporting events, shows, etc. Olympics? World Cup? All this brings more tourist revenue for tax payers to help fund roads, parks, police, libraries, and fire services. And to top all this off, the Chargers will be footing most of the bill. Get her done!

Is this what America has come to? You say Sanders is creating jobs? So let’s walk through this scenario… you do this…

1) drive to stadium and spend $20 for parking, employee earns minimum wage. Ace parking earns millions.
2) You buy program or "official" NFL crap, employee has a once a day job for only ten days at minimum wage.
3) You buy hot dog, nachos, beer or whatever, more ten days a year, minimum wage work.

GREAT JOBS WE CREATED! TEN DAYS A YEAR AT MINIMUM WAGE! WE ARE GOING TO SAVE THE WORLD!

WE ARE SO BRILLIANT!

Crap! I hope you are not serious? You can’t believe that is the reason. You can put a cigarette out in gasoline. The reason they dont allow smoking at the stadium is the second hand smoke that many people find offensive. Smokers are idiots.
