My Optimistic Prediction
I've been pretty pessimistic around SB Nation lately, both on Gaslamp Ball and here on BFTB. Therefore, in celebration of our victory over the Raiders today, I've decided to put forward a rosy view of the future. An optimistic portrait of what we could accomplish in the coming weeks if we can improve each week.
After that, we get two nice games at home vs. Kansas City, and on the road at Cleveland. It should not be a problem winning those games. That would put us at a nice 8-4.
The following two games are somewhat more difficult. At Dallas, who is playing great football right now, and at home vs. Cincinnati, who currently sits in first place in the tough AFC North. If we can somehow manage to split those two games (the game at home vs. Cincy seems like the best bet), we'd be at 9-5 with two games to play.
Our last two games of the season are eminently winnable--@ Tennessee on Christmas Day, and at home vs. the Redskins. Winning those two games would close us out at 11-5, which COULD be enough to win the division if we split with Denver, and should almost certainly be enough for a Wild Card spot.
The keys are the 5 games @ NYG, @ DEN, @ DAL, vs. PHI, and vs. CIN. Going 3-2 in those games would almost guarantee a 10+ win season, assuming we don't mess up against the remaining crappy teams on our schedule. That's our best chance to salvage the season.

Optimism is a fine thing ... but
It is wonderful being optimistic … and probably good for the digestive system. Somehow, though, I will keep the optimism on the back burner behind realism for a while. We have won 4 games over teams with a combined record of 6-16. While 3 of those wins have come against division teams it is hard to get too pumped up about beating the Chiefs and Raiders. The Raiders have only scored 78 points in 8 games but 36 of those came in 2 games against us. Our three losses have come to teams with a combined record of 15-6 and each of those teams scored over 30 points. Keep the optimistic eye open but don’t close the other eye yet.

I'm well aware.
I wrote this post because multiple individuals have suggested I take some prozac over the past week. Trying to find the sunny side in things.

Mark Giants off as a win
they could not beat a college team right now. If the Giants get the spread (even as the home team), then I (as a Giants fan) will be betting on your team. That is how far they have fallen and how little faith I have in that sadsack defense right now (also the anemic offense is rather depressing as well).

The Giants are in such disarray
They would need an EXTREME amount of help at this point to have a real shot.

I find this amusing.
We’re both on opposite sides, each convinced our team has no chance.
This should be fun!

Seriously man
Provided the Chargers review what the Saints, Eagles, and Cardinals (to a lesser degree) did, they win this one. It seems all you have to do is:
-on defense, simply show blitz and make Eli audible, he will change the play, and if the team does not take a motion or false start penalty, he will chuck a long incompletion or try to wedge a ball into too tight of a space. The run is basically non-existent at this point (seriously).
-on offense, max protect and just wait… the secondary will blow coverage eventually (particular the safeties). As for running, simply run it up the gut, as the DT are getting pushed aside, and Antonio Pierce is too slow to close the gap any more.
-special teams can make big returns on the Giants all of a sudden, and the return game for the Giants has gone MIA since the Saints game (and that is mainly because the Saints had to kick off so much… so I think the ST were just tired for them at that point).
I have just outlined the exact plan the last three teams used to kill the Giants, I am sure Phillip Rivers can handle the chucking part of the offensive plan. I don’t know anything about your run game (I assume it is still Tomlinson and Sproles), but a FULLBACK for the Eagles ran past the LB and DB for a 40 yard TD! A FREAKING FULLBACK! They could not catch a Fullback… I am repeating this a bit as no matter how much I type it, I still can not believe they are that slow and pathetic.

From what I can tell
and correct me if I’m wrong, Eli’s poor play the last three weeks had a lot to do with being under a lot of pressure.
Meet the San Diego Charger defense.
Completely unable to get pressure against anything but the worst o-lines and quarterbacks. Eli will have all kinds of time to sit back and pick us apart.
We're boned.

I thought this post was about you being optomistic, and not reverting back to your pessimistic attitude the past couple weeks....you need more prozac.

Pressure may be coming back...
… but the Giants will run the ball effectively, so SD’s offense or ST needs to find a way to build a lead. San Diego has a way of opening the door and closing it if they get an early lead that makes for fun football to watch as well as good games for SD. They need to do that this week, or they’re toast. They can….

Don't worry
the amount of attention Boss got this week in the offense will be forgotten, and they will go back to ignoring him again until the game is 2 or more scores out of reach.

That actually seems low. They’ve been much better than the Chargers this year and they’re playing at home.

Yup
3-2 in those games is the entire season. Out of those, the Giants, Cowboys and Bengals worry me the most because all three are in the top 10 in rushing offense. Denver’s not far behind either….

I'm going to assume you are using total rushing yards as your "ranking" there
Going into week 8, Philly had a better rush offense than the Giants by DVOA. I’m sure the gap only increased on Sunday. I guess what I’m trying to say is that you can add Philly to that list (although, maybe when they travel 3 time zones west they forget to run), but you can still be worried about the Giants even if their top 10 rushing yards rank may be a little inflated.
