San Diego Chargers Defeat Oakland Raiders 24-16

Whew, that was a little closer than I would've liked.  The Chargers defense had a hard time stopping the run all day, and just like Week 1 we can all admit that a better QB wins that game for the Raiders.  The Chargers offense was ineffective and mistake-prone for most of the game, but especially in the second half.

This was not the easy victory it looked like it was going to be.  I believe this is three straight weeks where the Bolts have played better in the first half than the second half.  That, plus all of the problems with the defense, needs to be fixed before going to New York next Sunday.

Bolts and Dolts will be difficult and interesting tomorrow.  Your input in the comments section about who you believe should be in each category would be greatly appreciated.

Sproles didn't really do anything well

The pick was on Jackson but he also had some nice catches, Rivers was inaccurate but I’d put that more on shoddy pass blocking.

Sproles gets a Dolt for sure

Merriman and Phillips both had multiple sacks so maybe a Bolt together.

Special teams coverage sucked. Pass protection wasn’t very good.

LT had some nice runs and 2 TDs but probably not enough for a Bolt.

Dobbins did a nice job filling in for Burnett and Siler did a nice job filling in for Dobbins.

I’m optimistic about the season but focusing on our quality of opponents does you nothing, at the end of the year have more wins then someone else then you could be considered better, doesn’t matter if you got the wins from horrible teams or good teams.

by Dude52089 on Nov 2, 2009 12:10 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Focusing on quality opponent

At best is what helps you determine what the team can do in the future. Teams that go on to winning records and super bowl victories tend to dominate against the weaker teams (and sometimes the middle-of-the-pack teams) and teams that lose big often tend to be one of the weaker teams. Quality of opponents does matter when trying to analyze the performance of the team and in a sense it matters for determining playoffs because teams will make the playoffs based on getting a schedule that gives them a number of opponents that they can beat. Obviously, getting into the playoffs is what matters, but a lot of people also want to know more about the team than if they get in or not otherwise they wouldn’t pay attention to the regular season at all.

I'd just like to point out two things:

1.) That did not seem like a Raiders game. There was no electricity in the air at the stadium today. At all.

2.) The Raiders were only able to score when they had a short field. I’m not worried about our defense on this day.

by 'Eaters on Nov 1, 2009 5:07 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

i doubt you were sitting behind the Raiders bench

there were a ton of delusional Raider fans and they were pretty loud. One thing i hate about the Raider games is you can only get one beer per person and they stop selling at the start of the 3rd quarter.

Raider fans get a huge Dolt IMO.

There is always going to be animosity near the visiting bench

but there was no electricity throughout the stadium. No buzz, very little excitement, few times to stand and get loud. Raiders fans were atypically quiet and Chargers fans were very complacent. I’ve gone to nearly every game for the past 15 years. I know when the Q is abuzz and when it isn’t.

by 'Eaters on Nov 1, 2009 8:11 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Agree with both of these

A couple inopportune penalties and poor special teams play gave the Raiders some short fields and were the only reasons the Raiders were in this game.

Jeromey Clary...

Clary is the biggest DOLT of the game, by far… Completely whiffed on multiple occasions, especially the one they showed on instant replay during the broadcast where the rookie took down Philip after being essentially unblocked.

At what point do the Chargers start auditioning D-Linemen at O-Line? It’s worked in the past (Dielman), and at this point Sproles would be a better right tackle than Clary’s been. None of the backup O-linemen have shown anything, and its not like they haven’t been given opportunities this season.

by Peli on Nov 1, 2009 5:57 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

First of all, Clary isn’t that bad. Secondly, since when do we have extra defensive linemen?

merriman, phillips, LT get bolts

I wasnt as observant as usual for the game, mainly due to a horrible halloween hangover, but merriman seemed to be improving and getting healthier which showed when he finally broke free for a couple sacks, and although LT’s ypc weren’t impressive he had a few nice runs to go along with a couple TD’s which is HUGE since we couldn’t punch it in at the 5yd line against the chiefs

Well, it seems that the chargers the last few weeks have managed to get out to fast starts, but stumble in the second half. And, norv’s play calling is still too predictable. Lets see, first down, I know let’s run it. SOS every week.

uh 2 plays and a TD for the offense to start the game inc a 53 yard bomb to Floyd and LT runs it in taking a direct snap in the wildcat. The two turnovers kept Oakland in the game. Rivers was not accurate in the 2nd half.

Chambers bolt

Surprisingly! That catch in tight coverage with the sun in his eyes, ball coming out of the shade – wow

Nate Keading – Dolt – not for his kicking, but for his idiotic habit of standing on the field during several plays where the Offense was driving in the red zone towards a score. I know Nate is trying to get his head into the potential kick and he is only standing a few yards into the field it is still a 12-men on the field penalty. If the Raiders wanted they could have challenged that last Charger TD. I think 12 men on the field negates it. Stupid, stupid Nate. If you need to see the field get Charlie Whitehurst to clear a section of side line for you
.
Bolt for Seifers – the guy got pounded on the first punt, and he was in big pain the rest of the way. Not sure if it was a hip, a leg, or lower back but I know that walk. He was crawling off the field like an old man with arthritis, but he kept answering the call. I think it was a lower back deal.

by Trendsearcher on Nov 2, 2009 5:06 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Disagree on Kaeding

He was getting the ball down to like the five yard line, which is huge for him. Also he saved a TD by taking down that runback; how many times do you see a kicker just totally whiff that tackle? Didn’t notice him on the field but will watch for it.

Oh his kicking was fine

and that saving tackle on the kick off was great too!

If he takes 6 points off the board because he is standing on the feild (at the side lines) that is absolutely idiotic. And that is what he was doing. Literally for four plays in a row the guy was standing out on the feild, “visualizing” the the feild goal kick. you can’t do that Kaeding! Get your but off the feild you dolt!

Scared of New York....

I was just wondering what you were thinking about these New York Football Giants. Their Defensive front is the best in the game right now, but their secondary has more holes in it then swiss cheese. With Bradshaw doing the job of Sproles, he is scarier then Jacobs! After their embarrassing loss to the Eagles, where they clearly looked unprepared, Do you see the Giants losing three straight? What do you see being the hardest part of next weeks game (you know, other then the chargers shooting themselves in the foot with more mistakes)? And also, would you Trade Manning for Rivers today?

I realize it’s monday…but it’s my prep period…

Personally, I think it is making Manning play catch up. This is the key to beating the Giants. What are your thoughts?
P.S. I got the parking permit and gates open at 11 and I don’t have to drive back to Virginia till the Next day. Only thing missing is a grill…which i am working on…

I think the Giants already lost 3 straight. This would be 4 in a row.

The Chargers will not be able to stop Jacobs. Power running backs that can break tackles have been nightmar-ish against San Diego so far.

HELL NO. I don’t think I ever would’ve. Rivers is five times the QB that Manning is.

The key to beating the Giants is scoring early and stopping the run. Manning doesn’t have to play catch-up by himself if it’s still close.

My biggest fear about this game

is that it turns into a repeat of Pittsburgh. Our offense starts slow and defense shows a complete inability to stop them. After a couple three-and-outs, we’re down 14 or 17 or 21 to nothing, and forced to drop back and throw every down, and they start blitzing the hell out of Philip.

We're boned.

Giants game

To me, this game could be anything. You could analyze matchups and try to focus on recent performances until the cows come home. But, you have one team that has basically gone from the top of the heap to desperation mode in the span of three weeks (anytime you lose a NFC East divisional game to fall a game behind the team that just beat you, the sky starts falling). Sure, they lost because they are vulnerable in a couple of areas, but they are also starting to realize it and this could be the game where they adjust. Or they could keep freefalling. Then, the other team is a team that many now see as a .500 team, but has seemingly fixed some things and got well against some skimpy opponents so they could be on to something. The Chargers both have something to prove in New Jersey, but on the other hand, could just be waiting for a better opponent to expose them on the road. It’s an very compelling matchup, but I don’t think we’ll have any idea what kind of game it will be until late on Sunday.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

by Wonko on Nov 2, 2009 9:46 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

I thought this was a good game.

Here’s the scoop on Oakland. If you break the game down to rushing O, rushing D, passing O, passing D and all ST, Oakland is pretty good on 3 of the 5 categories. Their weaknesses are a poor (not terrible, just subpar) rushing D and a truly awful passing offense. Otherwise they’re solid.

What’s this mean? Well, they can kind of run the ball, so they can sort of stay in games. And they can force the opponent to run, so if the opponent is having trouble running they can build a little lead and hold it. But if they give up a lead, the opponent will run on them and they won’t be able to throw their way out of it, so they tend to give up.

What happened yesterday? The Raiders didn’t give up. They couldn’t give up. This game would absolve them of everything else that happens this season, and with 3 weak opponents coming up would probably get them above 5 wins; hell, they could go 8-8! They did their best, gave it their all and instead of losing 41-7 lost 24-16. Note also that of the 16 points Oakland got, 13 were caused by short fields on turnovers or long returns… that’s pretty much how you score when you have a good shot at getting any given first down but no offensive big play potential. That probably kept them going, emotionally, even when it was clear they weren’t going to make it.

Bolts: Yay LT! Two more steps in the Emmitt-ward direction! Keep it up, come back, put up 800 yards and 11 TDs in the next 9 games. Get us some history, baby! Turner put some thinking into this one and it showed. Chambers showed how you respond to a benching. McNeill held his own when it mattered. Merriman is getting back into form, and this defense will stiffen. Phillips is almost as good as Merriman is… that is, as good as Merriman is at any given moment, so when Merriman gets better, Phillips gets better. Gregory is the twelfth starter. Ellison is a true SS, and can start for this team. ILB depth as a whole (Dobbins, Siler) is a Bolt.

Dolts: Clary is a Guard. Should’a drafted Oher and moved Clary inside. OL in general is mediocre. The injury bug gets the biggest Dolt of all, though, for taking out our ILB squad.

Neither: I’m tired of all these bolts for Rivers. He turned in a standard Rivers performance. Jackson put Oakland in the game and then took them back out. If I were a fantasy football guy and had Jackson I’d say he’s a Bolt. Can’t call him a Dolt, but that Int basically cancels the next drive. Gates and Floyd were good but not great.

by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Nov 2, 2009 8:40 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Everytime LT got the ball and fell down 1 or 2 yards past the line...

I little part of me died inside. It really kills me to see him just not get anything to work with play after play. I really hope Clary doesn’t start next year, and that we can get a solid RB in the draft next year to at least share the load and learn some things from LT.
