San Diego shake-up could be coming | ProFootballTalk.com
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, A.J. Smith is "spending time on the phone" with other teams, possibly in the hopes of swinging one or more trades before the October 20 deadline. (And given linebacker Shawne Merriman's comments from Wednesday, his contract status, and the general vibrations coming from the organization suggesting that he won't be part of the team's future, Merriman possibly could be on the block.)
The Union-Tribune also reports that there's a feeling within the locker room that defensive jobs are "up for grabs." Defensive coordinator Ron Rivera reportedly sent that message to his troops earlier this week.

I would not be surprised...

-Shaun Rogers
-Marcus Stroud
-Hollis Thomas
Those seem to me to be the best 3 candidates, but I don’t like anyone else really except for Rogers.

I think Stroud could be had without losing Merriman
Don’t like Thomas, and Rogers come up for free agency, doesn’t he? That would be an indicator that they’re still trying to save the season.

Can we PLEASE draft Ali Villanueva of Army this year??? I'd mortgage a kidney for a tackle/wideout hybrid.

Rogers is not a free agent until 2015.
It’s probably a bad sign that Stroud is supposedly available even though he signed with the Bills this past offseason.
That bad thing for the Chargers is that their weaknesses are at DT and SS, which are becoming the most coveted positions in the league because there’s not enough of those guys available.

Rogers would be extremely expensive
given how good a player he is, and how desperately we need him. I don’t think, and Acee agrees, that we’ll be picking up a new DT. What we have is what we get.

I agree that I don’t think there’s a new DT on the way. I just don’t know what other reason there is for AJ Smith to be working the phones.

Hopefully he's taking advice from Kevin Towers on working the phones
and the Rophynal.

I agree.
I don’t know what exactly they think they can do to bring in help that isn’t a DT.

Thank goodness.
Whether you like going the trade route or not, we really need to make a trade or else this season might be going down the tubes and fast.

I'd give Merriman and a 1st round pick
for Jenkins or Jay Ratliff. Ratliff is still under-the-radar, but the Cowboys would give away everyone on the team not named DeMarcus Ware before they parted with him.

What could we possibly trade for?
Top NTs aren’t to be had. SS, maybe? There’s no way that the unknown CB will be a better bet than Cro or Cason, the drop-off on the o-line is at C, where we’ve made a move, and on the left side, where any roster moves would be premature.
I’m telling you, man, there’s no fixing the roster. But it’s possible to fix the ground attack, which will let us score earlier. That’s the only solution we’ll get for the run-D.

Safety is about the only position I can think of.
But again, I don’t know that there’s anyone available we could trade for that would be a significant upgrade over what we have. The guy I was thinking about, Jermaine Phillips, is already back on the IR.
Other than selling out for a new DT, I don’t think there’s any fixing the roster either. At least in the middle of the season. In the off-season, I think the defense needs to get blown up, except for a few players.

I like to look at teams that are completely out of it already. Here’s the only players I could see being traded (going under the assumption that we’re looking for a DT or SS) and immediately moving into the Chargers’ starting lineup.
Dolphins
Jason Ferguson
Bills
Marcus Stroud (undersized for 3-4)
Bryan Scott
Browns
Shaun Rogers
Abram Elam
Titans
Tony Brown
Chris Hope
Bucs
Ryan Sims
Panthers
Damione Lewis
Rams
Clifton Ryan
Most of those teams would just want picks. At least a 2nd rounder, probably a 1st. I’d say the Titans would want Volek, but he’s got a bad history with Fischer. The Dolphins might want Volek.
I’d love to grab Rogers and Elam, but I don’t see it happening.

Rogers is the only player I think could really make an actual difference right now.
And he’d be the most expensive. And we’ve been told already what we have is what we get for the DT position.
I just don’t understand why AJ has so neglected the defensive line. With a team that is supposed to be on a championship push, he leaves the most important spot(s) on the defense extremely thin, so when an injury happens we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Just boggles my mind.

Rogers would be overpriced
to trade for, and overpriced in his salary.
Here are a few guys that I think we could possible get for a reasonable price:
Gabe Watson or Alan Branch on the Cards
Jimmy Kennedy Minn
Marcus Harrison Chi
They are not all traditional NTs but we need help up front and they are better than what we have now.
Again, the time to bring a player or two in was in the offseason, now we are scrambling for whatever scraps we can get (Boone, Johnson). I guess everybody was happy with the young guys and now here we are.
by JeromeB on Oct 8, 2009 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Watson and Branch – The Cardinals made it to the SB last year. They’re certainly not “sellers”.
Kennedy – Would be a good choice is the Starcaps thing wasn’t still looming over their DTs. Also, why mess with 4-0?
Harrison – Maybe. He’s not a starter for them and they could use another pick to replace the one they gave away for Cutler. Intriguing find. I think he’ll be a tough get because he’s 25 though. If he was 28, it’d be much easier.

Watson and Branch
While I agree that the Cards are probably not looking to unload anyone. Neither Watson or Branch start for them (they do get time each week) so I think that the Cards would listen to offers.
