Nose Tackle
I know this isn't madden 2010 or fantasy football, but is the idea of trading for a nose tackle completely off the table?
I know AJ dealt a 2nd rounder for Chambers not too long ago so he is not allergic to a mid-season deal. This would be the most opportune time to do so seeing as the player would have the bye week to learn some of this complex (ha) defense.
The only large name that jumps is Shaun Rogers because of the off-season troubles he had with Mangini. Also we know that Mangini needs to build a team so dealing for picks would benefit him. Plus the Browns are awful and have a lot other holes needed to fill. I know having another aging D-lineman would not be a long term answer, but it would provide a spark for the short-term.
Back to the draft picks, its not like we're using these picks for impact players anyways. I mean English is starting to come around, I think missing most of the preseason really hurt him. Cason is a good player and I think will fill in for Cromartie sooner than later. And as much as people wanna knock Weddle, he keeps the team in the game by making a ton of tackles; if he was on a better defense, maybe he'd make plays as he did against Miami and Oakland this year. But other than that, the drafts have been garbage in the passed three years, that is why we are seeing a decline. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/sdg.htm
I think dealing for an EFFECTIVE nose tackle would open that window back up for the season and could potentially turn this porous, embarrassing defense around. Has their been anything insinuating a move of this sort. Or is AJ going to continue on with this team? Is this completely out of the question? It doesn't have to be a player of Rogers magnitude; obviously its going to take much more than one would like to land this woolly mammoth, but who are other NT's that could help?

Take rodgers
they might have to do that

Unlike Jamal, he hasn’t had any history of injuries I don’t think.

What if we sent 'em Merriman?
It seems like AJ doesn’t want him next year anyway. And he will not be close to 100% until the end of the season.

Why don't we send them a first round pick
Like I said they may have to
by BFTB_zach on Oct 6, 2009 9:39 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s hard to send them a guy that’s 1) technically not under contract past this season, 2) will be expensive as hell, 3) is coming back from a major knee injury and has yet to look like his old self, and 4) recently got arrested by Tila Tequila (not a joke, even fake arrests are looked at as “issues”).
Shaun Rogers will likely cost a first round pick and maybe more (like an additional, later-round pick). The only players the Browns would want are talented, young, underpaid players (Vasquez, Clary, Weddle, etc) and the Chargers won’t give those up.

Given AJ's penchant for building through the draft
Giving draft choices seems bad.
I agree we can’t loose the talented young guys.
How about Chambers, Merriman, and VJ (ouch!)
by Trendsearcher on Oct 6, 2009 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not VJ. Shouldn’t give up on Merriman because he’s cheap to keep if there’s no CBA. Browns already have a WR with a case of the dropsies, no need for Chambers.
I think Rogers could be had for a 2nd rd pick and a 3rd round pick. Maybe throw in Whitehurst – he can’t be worse than Quinn/Anderson.

Brown's just parted with their Mr. Dropsie...
I only put VJ out there because, I don’t think we are gonna be able to sign him next year with the way he’s played so far this year. Why not get some value from VJ while we still can.
The Brown’s might be able to work a sign & trade deal with VJ now that Edwards is gone

Well,
The way Cro is playing right now, We really only have 2 cornerbacks. BAM!!!
Something needs to get Cro going, he has all of the talent in the world, But as i am sure everybody else is…Im tired of this excuse. I think he will improve and come back to his 2007 ways
Well, lets find out who Juju will help us deal with next

Possible Suggestions
First off I am not sure of the contract status of the following players or if any of them are dinged right now, so I am not sure if any of them are actually good suggestions. But I think that they are players that would be worth looking into as far as trades go. They are not all traditional NTs but at this point we need to take what we can get.
Gabe Watson on the Cardinals, Marcus Harrison on Chicago, Jimmy Kennedy on Minn
Also I think that Kendrick Allen is a free agent, if he is still unsigned, healthy and in shape he might not be a bad option.
I put up a post in the pre season saying that the weaknesses of last season (experienced depth on the O and D Line and help at safety) were not addressed. Most people replied that we would be fine, the young guys we had were better than old free agent retreads. Yet here we are signing Alfonso Boone and Dennis Norman, and talking about what else can be done. I hope that things work out, but now the pickings are slim and the people that you bring in don’t have the advantage of going through training camp and pre season to learn the system.

They got two more D-linemen already this season.
I agree that Boone and Johnson aren’t exactly the most encouraging players, but what do you think is out there to be had? The answer is either Ogemdi Nwagbuo, Vaughn Martin, Alfonso Boone, some trick of scheme, more beef behind the line, or doing better on offense in the first half. Sorry to burst all your bubbles.
Next year, though… they need to draft a nose tackle in the top 3 rounds, but I think they’ll have a solid front in Cesaire, Martin and Nwagbuo. Just gotta figure out a way to keep winning until the kids get it together.
It might be easier to build a running game at this point. We have the halfbacks. We have linemen that we know can pull it together, for the most part. We have a really good blocking TE and a couple of passable fullbacks. All we need is a way to convert on 3rd and short, and a good first down play to set up 2nd and short, and the hole at nose tackle won’t be too noticeable.

As long as our kickoff coverage remains as good as it’s been, that is. If your opponent can gash you on the ground but always has a long way to go, and has to score when they can, you’ll usually win.

Agree, we are stuck with what we have
I was just throwing some names out because he asked for some ideas at the end of his fan post. Lets hope things work out.

He's not Shaun Rogers
but this Shaun is now eligible after his suspension (and a free agent in part because of the suspension). He’s got pretty good size, and his face looks like it would fill out a helmet on the order of a Casey Hampton.

I'm starting to think we should make a move for Rodgers.
A 2nd round pick and Cromartie.
I’ve pretty much had it with him. Sure, we’d need to go out and get a bargain bin replacement to play nickel when Cason moves to starter, but if we could actually get better line play, that can make up for a lot, and make replacement-level DBs look better than they are.
A lot like the Charger defense from 2004-2006.
Greg Maddux for manager.

A lot of the problem
is AJ’s infatuation with cornerbacks. I totally get it: if you want a really great CB, late in the first round is a good place to look. But a secondary is limited by several things: the better of the best safety or the second-best CB is one of them, but the pass-rush is another, and the run-D and the ability to set up long fields is a 3rd. The corners are fine (yes, Cro too). But they’ll look bad until we get either a good pass rush or a good enough run D (or first-half offense, either way) to make an average pass rush look good.
