Owen Daniels - The best tight end in the AFC ?
The Top 4
| Player | Team | G | Rec | Yds | Yds/G | Lng | Avg | TDs | 20+ | 40+ |
| Heath Miller | PIT | 7 | 40 | 353 | 50.4 | 25 | 8.8 | 4 | 1 | 0 |
| Owen Daniels | HOU | 7 | 39 | 497 | 71.0 | 44 | 12.7 | 5 | 7 | 2 |
| Dallas Clark | IND | 6 | 38 | 485 | 80.8 | 80 | 12.8 | 3 | 6 | 2 |
| Antonio Gates | SD | 6 | 34 | 474 | 79.0 | 37 | 13.9 | 2 | 8 | 0 |
I know I'm a homer, so just wanted to get some other opinions about who has been the best tight end in the AFC this season. And I am just talking about this season, wasn't comparing career stats on these guys. I also posted this on all the respective blogs for these four tight ends to get differing opinions.

I think it's a tie
between Gates and Clark. Daniels is beast, and was awesome on my fantasy team the last few seasons, but I think he’s just behind those two guys.
I hate Heath Miller. Not because of anything he’s done, just because of how great Steelers fans think he is.

I think it's easily Gates over Clark
Just because our 3rd down offense usually revolves around Gates and the opponents know that; even though they did know they, they still can’t stop him.

Are you seriously asking a bunch of Charger fans
who we think the best tight end in the league is?
And what exactly do you expect us to say?

Expected you guys to defend Gates
but I wanted that. Because he isn’t getting any votes from the other blogs. Gates lead the league in percentage of catches for a first down, with Owen Daniels right behind him.

Sorry, I probably didn't need to take that tone.
My bad.
But yeah, all things considered we’d go with Gates. He also leads in YPC.

No Problem
just thought I would give each team a chance to defend their guy. Would like to focus on their blocking abilities as well, but there aren’t alot of reliable stats for that.

Are you going for best tight end THIS SEASON
or throughout their careers?
Because if it’s the latter, then it’s Gates no question. The only guy who can hold a candle to Gates career-wise right now is Tony Gonzalez, and personally I expect Antonio to pass him by the time he’s through.

Just this season.

Alright let's do this right...
1. As already stated by everyone above with a brain, you are NOT going to get unbiased results by polling teams whose tight end is in the polling.
(Ex.: "So-And-So is obviously the best TE in football because he plays for my team and since I am a winner and I only back winners, then by the Transitive Property So-And-So is a winner and is therefore the winner of this poll.")
2. You are not going to get unbiased opinions from teams who are in the same division as any of the candidates in this poll.
(Ex. 1: "I hate So-And-So’s guts because he plays for our division rivals and always makes our defense look like a pack of drunken hillbillies stumbling around in the dark looking for their lost coon-hound ‘Cletus’, therefore, I would sooner set my ass-hair on fire than vote for him.
Ex. 2: "So-And-So, our division rivals TE, regularly beats on us like orphans at a Catholic monastery, and since I know we’re awesome then the only logical explanation is that he is the best fucking TE to ever walk in cleats. He gets my face-saving vote.")
3. You are not going to get an unbiased opinion from inter-division rivals either, such as between the Colts and the Pats or the Steelers and the Pats, for much the same reasons as stated in point #2.
(Ex.: Pats Fan: "Gawd, I hate those douchebag Colts and Stealers! They’s always a takin’ what is rightfully owas’ as the best fans in the facking universe! I would rather stick my cawk in a gawdamn wood-chippa’ than vote for they’ra guy!")
4. You’re not going to get an informed opinion from any NFC fans do to lack of familiarity with the candidates.
(Ex.: NFC Fan #1: "Hey, who do you think the best TE in the AFC is, buddy?"
NFC Fan #2: "What the hell is the AFC?")
Conclusion: Poll the remaining AFC East teams (Bills, Jets, Dolphins). They have little-to-no dog in this fight and would be the closest thing you’re going to get to an unbiased and informed opinion. Hell, we’ll even give you the Pats. Go ahead and ask ‘em.
To make it truly fair, though, you need to change that Coltsbanishment crap in the body.
Unless, that is, you’re afraid of a fair fight?

hey bro
your ID might work on any other teams website, but in case you havent been watching, peyton is most assuredly NOT our daddy, in fact, its more the opposite.
dont get me wrong, i totally admire the guy, its just that for whatever reason, dating back to us ending the colts long winning streak to start the season, he has been more like our b*^%$ than our daddy

3 Things to Remember in the Future...
1. I ain’t your “bro”.
2. Every dog has it’s day, sometimes even a couple in your guys case. Don’t expect it to happen again.
3. You may think you’re some kind of Colts kryptonite, but just remember this:
Kryptonite may work on Superman but to everyone else that owns it, it’s just an ugly f*cking rock.
That’s the Chargers. An ugly f#cking rock that everyone owns.

I'm open to posting it for AFC East
You also might be surprised by the results on the Jags blog. Even though they hate the colts, Clark is leading vote getter over there. My main concern when creating this post, was that I can’t show these guys skills as blockers. When I get a chance to edit, I will remove the Colt banishment part of the body as well.

For those that care
Daniels has also been the best TE by DYAR this year. Clark is 2nd, Gates is 3rd. Miller is down there, but in the AFC he trails only Watson and Scheffler who are targeted much less often.

It looks like a strong case
can be made for Daniels being the best so far this season. My bias vote would still be for Gates, I will admit I have only seen three of the Texans games this year so I am probably not the best judge of it.
Clark is no doubt a talented TE but I really think the big numbers that he puts up are due to the offense that he plays in. I think there are a number of TEs that would look great on the Colts.

Three ranks
As a lineman:
1. Miller
2. Daniels
5 (tie). Clark, Gates
As a receiver:
1. Gates (by a stubstantial margin – unbelievable quicks, body control, understanding of routes)
2. Daniels (over Clark – uses body better, very good hands)
3. Clark (yardage/TD monster – knows how to find the hole in a zone, but Peyton is the engine behind this)
4. Miller (but underrated as a receiver over his career)
Overall:
1. Gates
2. Daniels
3. Miller
4. Clark

Don't you think
That answers the question “Who is the best tight end?” instead of “Who has been the best tight end this year?”

This generation of the NFL is flooded with talent at the Tight End position, it’s a beautiful thing.

I expect that once all is said and done and the bye catches up to Daniels and Miller
Gates and Clark will be the top-two, in that order.
