the TD catch where he came back to the ball

just highlighted why its almost unfair with VJ against little corners. he just decided “i am going occupy this region of the endzone, Rivers will throw it to me, and there is zero you can do about it. i WILL move you if i have to.”

the corner wasn’t even close. i love this dude.

now Chambers, on the other hand, can pound sand for all i care.

I love the radio call of that play, because Josh Lewin says “Rivers points to where he’s going to throw it.” And he did! That’s so ridiculous. He told the CB exactly where it was going, because he knew VJ wasn’t going to let the ball not be a TD catch.

How long has it been...

since our best offensive weapon (extremely subjective, I admit) has been a WR? If you leave out QB, when was the last time we had a WR as our top threat? Gates is Money, LT still has gas in the tank, and Sproles has his flashes, but I think it’s clear the one skill position player on this team that can absolutely take a game by the throat is Vincent Jackson. He’s getting better by the game, and I’ll venture to say he’s our best WR since Air Coryell.

AND HE’S JUST SCRATCHING THE SURFACE OF HOW GOOD HE CAN BE!!!

With PR throwing, this project out of Division 2 Northern Colorado has finally shown the promise AJ Smith envisioned when he nabbed him in the 2nd round in ’05.

I don’t remember if it was here or another site, but I argued with some Dolt that claimed that VJ wasn’t a #1 receiver. I said then, and I’ll say it now, Vincent Jackson is one of the top 5 receivers in The League.

Nobody ever remembers Anthony Miller

Maybe it’s because we block out the memories of Chargers who become Broncos.

Check out the 1989-1993 Chargers and tell me that Anthony Miller wasn’t the Chargers best offensive weapon. It’s still been a long time, but it was “since Air Coryell”.

If I really wanted to quibble I could also claim the Chargers best offensive weapon from 1999-2000 was Jeff Graham and from 1996-1997 it was Tony Martin, but maybe it was Freddie Jones since he got a lot of catches for most of those teams.

I'm pretty sure Richard is correct.

But given the number of Pro Bowls and the offensive environment at the time and the length of Miller’s time with the Chargers vs. Jackson’s time, you could probably make the argument that Miller was a better Charger. IMO Miller is probably the 6th or 7th best WR is Chargers history. I’m not sure I can put VJ up there yet.

But, I wasn’t thinking about that when I wrote the comment, just that Miller was unequivocally the Chargers best offensive weapon for half a decade.

when was there ever that choice?

Why would a good GM let it come to LB vs. WR?

I don’t think Merriman vs. Jackson has ever occurred to Smith. If they are both players he would want to keep, he’d be playing Jackson vs. Chambers, and Merriman vs. the salary cap. You find a way to keep ALL of your best players, especially if you are a “grow them at home” GM.

by Hoot1969 on Oct 26, 2009 5:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look

We were referencing a post earlier in the season where there were a list of Charger FAs at the end of the year. Because of the salary cap (future CBA excluded) you cannot keep all of your “best players”. We aren’t saying AJ has pictures of them on a white board and is doing a pros/cons list because he can only keep 1.

Just a hypothetical question to get people to think about who is expendable so we don’t overpay for guys that aren’t needed.

the amount of money...

needed to sign VJ to an extention is directly proportional to his play on the field. At the beginning of this season it was less than it would be now, and that is because he’s been a stud. If he continues this pace (he will) til the end of the season, his price will rise accordingly. The question was (or is) should he get top 10 (or top 5) receiver money? He should and he will. I just hope it’s with the Chargers.

Sproles

Was probably the hardest guy to put on the list. He’s terrific and a game changer, but he wants to be an every down back. The only way I see them keeping him is to use the franchise tag and pay him huge money every year. I’m not sure that makes sense.

He can want to be an every down back

for the rest of his career if he chooses, but I don’t think there is a team out there who will ever give him that. Much like Osgood wants to be a “real” wr, some things are just not goint to happen.

Your point about using the franchise tag and paying him huge money each year is very valid.

I hope he is offered a slightly more then fair contract with the chargers, understands it is probably the best fit for him and takes the deal.

Dobbins is also a free agent

He probably falls into that category.

Travis Johnson too, but I think we all knew that. Manumaleuna probably won’t return unless its for cheap.

Cromartie isn’t a free agent until after 2011.

Neither are Chambers or LT, but their age and price are obviously why you are listing them (cap casualties).

I haven’t done the math, but I think you can let all the free agents except McNeil, Sproles, VJ, Clary and Floyd go, cut Chambers and still be under the cap (assuming there is one). Someone will probably need to be franchised just to make negotiating window a little easier (hey, if we don’t make the playoffs, more time to negotiate, bright side anyone?).

Of course, that means that you need some cheap replacements at ILB (somebody from practice squad?), 3rd string QB, 2nd and 3rd string TE, 5th WR and basically keep the DL the same with Bingham and Williams returning to go with Cesaire, Nwagbuo, Martin and Castillo (and maybe Boone or Scott re-sign on the cheap). It also means that Vazquez, Ellison/Oliver/Gregory, Tolbert/Hester, Burnett and English all develop such that we are comfortable enough that the positions won’t need to be upgraded. It will probably also mean some more casualties come 2011 offseason, but that’s a whole new world as far as I’m concerned.

I was under the impression that Cromartie's contract is up after 2010

and Chambers is up after this year.

I imagine we’ll draft at least one linebacker.

I’d like to think we’ll make a little bit of a splash in free agency this off-season, so we can get back to being good faster. Though if AJ sticks with the same approach he’s used the last couple off-seasons, we’ll see zero FA additions and draft picks only. Which is fine, but it will take longer to rebuild the roster and we’ll stay mediocre for another couple years.

As far as free agency goes, I’d like to beat the drum again for Sean Jones at safety. He’s the guy Philly signed to replace Dawkins and he’s played pretty well this season so far. They only signed him to a 1-year deal, so he’s available again this winter.

i still don’t see it happening. i think the chargers front office has a hard-on for the white guys in the secondary.

by BORTZ on Oct 27, 2009 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Some of it

will be determined by who they like in the draft. I’m guessing running back, safety and nose tackle all have to be prime targets; though if a strong road paving tackle fell in their laps they might have to take him. If they can keep Dobbins; I wouldn’t be averse to that. His coverage is weak, but he is a physical presence there.

The one thing the Patriots do, that I like better than the way AJ handles it is trade guys that are going out anyway, and trade them to bad teams. So they have a second rounder coming from the Chiefs and a first rounder from the Raiders, those are golden picks. AJ lets folks walk and takes the fourth and fifth rounders.

One thing that is interesting if we go capless is the extra transition tag, so not only do teams own players for six years, they can keep two (or be well compensated for them) beyond that with the tags. Considering the average career length in the NFL is like four years, not so many players are going to make it to free agency any more; everything will be based on drafting skill.

Kinda

Like any commodity the amount of money he is worth is the amount people are willing to pay for him. His play on the field does put him in the upper echelon of WRs but the market basically determines what hes worth. If the market is out of control and WRs are getting insane contracts then letting him walk doesn’t hurt as much because we have 2 other very good WRs so the drop off in talent isn’t as other positions.

VJ is a must sign

AJ has to get an extension on the guy. Period. After VJ comes McNeill.

You can count CC as gone. Get VJ signed & Merriman likely gets the RFA tender of a 1 & 3. If someone is willing to pony that up – hasta la vista, baby. On the fence about Darren – love the guy, but he’s gonna want to get paid. Cro is going to have to show me some serious attitude adjustment for me to get behind keeping him. He looks much better in man-to-man coverage, but his tackling is still downright atrocious. I don’t know if that will change. I’m also on the fence about Burnett & Cooper. If Cooper stays, he needs to be in a rotation with someone who can lay the wood like Dobbins & Siler.

This year, we gotta draft beef first. Help at RB can come on the 2nd day unless we end up with extra 1st day picks & there’s the next LT out there. I don’t see Jamal back in a Chargers uni – sad to say, but it’s what my crystal ball tells me. Build the defense with big nasties, build the OL with guys who can keep PR upright, & keep PR’s weapons intact.

LT could be a casualty.

So you said you don’t know about Sproles because he’s going to want to get paid, and LT could be a casualty, but the Chargers shouldn’t look for a RB in the draft until the second day?

Burnett and Cooper are signed long term. They’re going to be the starters for the foreseeable future.

Deion Sanders couldn’t tackle much either.

Do you really want a Deion Sanders on this team?

I don’t. I want guys who are willing to stick their nose in & knock the stuffing out of the opponent.

As for addressing the RB – plenty of 2nd day guys can get the job done if we beef up the OL properly. The days of having to draft a RB on day one are done. Only the really elite talent – an LT or AP – are worth that unless you have a wealth of draft picks.

Burnett & Cooper may be signed long term, but that should guarantee nothing with regards to their starting ability. When should your order in the draft or money that you’re earning outweigh your performance on the field? In my book, your play is the determining factor unless you have to look at cap implications. When I look at Cooper & Burnett, I don’t see the type of impact players at the ILB position that I want as 3 down starters. Rotate them based upon run or passing down – OK. But a guy like Dobbins, with Siler as his backup, brings the type of nastiness that this D has lacked since the loss of Godfrey to retirement & Foley to stupidity.

If the thunder don't get ya then the lightning will!!

by Buck Melanoma on Oct 27, 2009 7:51 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, I will take the great CB of all time on my team. The difference is that Cromartie hasn’t reached Deion’s level of talent in defending the pass. Still, if he’s going to turn into that guy I’ll take him any day of the week. Deion literally took half of the field away from his opponents.

2nd day RBs are risks and usually are not ready to be immediate starters. Gartrell Johnson is an example of that. They’re “projects”. The Chargers need a RB to step in and immediately be the starter. A situation like the one Moreno/Buckhalter are playing in Denver would be perfect, with LT playing the Buckhalter role.

Dobbins and Siler also bring the lack of pass coverage skills that has created the Chargers problems on defense. Was 2008 Dobbins better than Kevin Burnett? I don’t think so. The only 2009 game where he’s really stood out is against the lowly Chiefs.

Cooper is not in there to be a nasty player. He’s the leader and the captain. He’s also usually a sure-tackler. He’s in there to play the Donnie Edwards role. Even when Foley and Godfrey were out there, Donnie was there to be the coverage LB.

Buck, the fact is that if you were to put Dobbins out there as the 2 MLBs the Chargers defense would get shredded. Tight Ends and Running Backs catching the ball would be unstoppable. Also, you’d be losing Cooper’s leadership. I know you like big-hitters, but those guys don’t necessarily make the best MLBs anymore.

I said put Dobbins in with Cooper/Burnett as a rotation

at the other spot. Siler would be rotated in with Dobbins. I see nothing at all wrong with one ILB being more coverage oriented while the other is a run stuffer. As for Cooper being the leader of the D – how’s that been working out for us lately? This D needs some attitude & right now I’m not seeing much of it. Dobbins didn’t just make an impact against KC – the kid has stiffened up our run D on more than one occasion.

I don’t draft RB’s on the 1st day unless they are a really, really good talent. They’ve become a disposable resource in today’s NFL unless they are in an elite class.

As for Deion – I’ll never be convinced that he’s the best CB ever, so don’t even try. Entertaining – maybe. When you play on my type of defense, you get down & dirty. If you want to tackle like a matador, get in a bull ring.

Advanced stats are now up for this week

VJ is the #1 WR in DYAR, YAR and DVOA. The triple crown for his position. And it’s not really close, except for DVOA where Miles Austin is only a couple of % points behind.

For some reason I just don't like Miles Austin.

I don’t know why. Maybe it was his smug expression and askew Yankee hat he had on in the post-game interview on Sunday.

We're boned.

I like him from last season’s Hard Knocks. Came off as a good guy and hard worker who had to fight his way up the depth chart. I think the only reason he wasn’t a bigger part of the offense last year is he had a hard time staying healthy and TO was still demanding the ball.

Damn

Let’s hope VJ’s agent doesn’t know about FO.

Maybe

But a big part of those numbers are all his big plays and first downs and I bet you he knows about those.
