"It doesn’t matter who you’re playing, what you’re playing, you give up two big returns for touchdowns like we did on the punt and kickoff, it makes it tough. It makes it real tough and it didn’t give us a chance to take advantage of some of the things we did extremely well."
Norv Turner discussing the Chargers' Special Teams
I can already tell I'm going to get tired of this. Everyone is going to point to those 2 special teams touchdowns and say "Without those, the Chargers win the game!" Well, if for some arbitrary reason you're taking away Royal's TDs you should probably take away Sproles' TD also.
At the same time, there's absolutely no guarantee that the Broncos wouldn't have driven down the field and scored on those drives anyways. It's not as if their offense couldn't get anything going.

Echoing my thoughts exactly
Not sure who your guys’ ST coach is, but Norv putting it all on him is pretty lame. The dissension in that locker room is going to get nuts.
Just for the sake of making things interesting, I hope AJ has a trade in him.

I agree the Donks won on special teams… We just have to deal with the Scoreboard
We can second guess it too much. Special teams were big last night. The Chargers were great on returns not so good on coverage. Denver got it done.

Well said, John...........
I read BFTB regularly but I don’t ever recall writing before this week but I did because the general disconnect between fantasy and reality about this team is astounding. This team, as it is right now, is NOT A WINNER. It pains me to say that, but I think it’s pretty obvious. And the fans living with their heads in the sand making excuses for the team are ridiculous.
Much like the Sacramento Kings in the early ,00’s and the Atlanta Braves of the 90’s, this team is a collection of great talent without the knowledge and mentality to be a champion. They don’t have the toughness it takes to take that last step. And although it seems like typical Charger Fan won’t agree with me (at least that’s the way it comes across when they’re using their “tough guy” mentality), yapping and puffing your chest out on the field and in the media doesn’t make you tough.
The team as a WHOLE needs to be overhauled. It’s the only way this culture of “we’re great, we only lost because……..(enter excuse here)” is going to change and the Bolts are going to be the team we’d like them to be.
Maybe a little humility (aka reality) from Charger fan wouldn’t hurt either. As a fan when you’re more worried about having to hear barking from Bronco fan about the win than what the team did to cause the loss, perhaps you should tone down the yapping to begin with.
My two cents, obviousman.

Saying this team is like the 90's Braves
is over-flattering of this team. Those were some damn good baseball teams.

Marty’s 14-2 Chargers were like the 90s Braves. This is like the 2004-2005 Braves that weren’t juggernauts but kept winning division titles.

I agree that it's foolhearty to assume that you win the game without the special teams coverage problems.
But suffice it to say that it changes the game. The Broncos seem to have a pattern to their games where they start slow on offense and give up some scores on defense, then they turn it around in the second half. The Chargers really needed to take advantage of that better than the Cowboys or Patriots did where they both got 10 points before the Broncos started scoring. If you don’t fail so miserably on special teams maybe you could build a 13 point lead or a 17 point lead or possibly even a 20 point lead (the number of points they scored in the first half). That would have changed how the Broncos approached the rest of the game (maybe). So, I think what Turner is hinting at is that the bad special teams plays made it a different type of game than they wanted to play. It’s a case where you had a good idea what you could do on offense to beat them and what you could do on defense to stop them, but special teams got in the way of making it only about those two parts and that’s a shame. So, in that sense, you can blame the special teams for not living up to their end of the bargain.

oh blah blah blah blah
I dont normally post here either but I chose to yesterday for the first time. I’ve read posts on this site for weeks and believe me Charger Fan KNOWS that this isnt going well. I dont really see myself brushing sand out of my ears and hair this morning. But as FANS we know the talent we have on this team. Its beyond frustrating to watch them get taken out of games for a number of reasons…None of which I feel qualified to list. I love this team , I grew up in Escondido and as I stated yesterday my Dad was a CHP officer for over 20 years in San Diego. I love this team and I love this city ! The one thing I will say is I have never been sold on Norv Turner as the coach. I have felt this way since Day one of his hiring. Heck, I wanted Michael Singletary to coach in SD. We as fans and as a city are HUNGRY for a Championship. I dont care if the rest of the nation calls San Diego lukewarm because of the weather and beaches, etc blah blah. There a thousands of Charger fans across So Cal who support this team. But again, lemme state I hate that this team is UNDER PERFORMING ! The hunger to win has to be inspired from the GM to the coaching staff to the players.
I will remain HUMBLE because I’m a fan, but let me be very clear, it will be a cold day in hell when I am EVER humble for a DENVER, OAKLAND or GOD HELP ME KC fan.
I was raised watching Louie Kelcher, Billy Shields, Ed White, Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, Rolf Benirschke, and Charlie Joiner treating those teams like their bitches.
I dont have the answers….I just know I love this team. So Donkey fan go screw yourself.

Numerous people were saying this yesterday and it just doen’t make sense to assume they score on both of those. It is a hypothetical situation to could just as easily have resulted in 2 punts. The bottom line is the special teams gave up 14 points against a good team that didn’t need any handicaps.

Without those two TD’s, the Chargers probably do win. That’s not an excuse for losing. That’s just pinning the blame where it belongs. The coverage teams lost this game pretty much all by themselves.

14 points hurts for sure but the D surendered 20 more
We did just enough on Offence to cover of either, but not both at the same time.

Those returns completely changed the complexion of the game and forced both the offense and defense to do things differently than they would have liked.

not completly..
those returns are a reflection of the teams overall problem. players missing assignments. being out of position, and trying to do more than what thier supposed to do.
but hey, it’s football. things don’t always go the way you planned. so you make adjustments and overcome. it’s what great teams do.

I think many of us realize
That the Chargers aren’t a great team. So, surrendering 14 points on ST is too much to overcome.

Absolutely correct
The Chargers still led the game after the first half and those 2 touchdowns. It still doesn’t account for the dominating performance by the Broncos in the second half and the Chargers inability to respond.
