Broncos vs. Chargers Position Breakdown
Hey guys this was posted last week and I thought it was pretty cool.
http://www.sdnn.com/sandiego/sports/chargers/position-by-position-breakdown-chargers-broncos
The coaching advantage that the Broncos are given is the most surprising to me. Yeah McDaniels has had early success but he hasn't coached a Monday night game or even a tough division one yet.
We all know that the Chargers need this one!
San Diego Super Chargers!

Generous in a few areas
But all these types of conjectures are just that and usually biased based on where they are coming from. This wasn’t the worst I’ve seen by far…called it like it was a few different ways.
I do agree with the coaching edge though…McDaniels and Nolan are showing far superior coaching this year to most of the teams out there.

I don't see how it was that bad
There were two thing the chargers won and ya it came from San Diego so i would hope they want us to win. Rivers is bettter then Orton and our recievers are better then your recievers as a group.

Epic Fail
Rivers may be better than Orton, but I don’t agree at all with the assessment of WRs.
You have 2 decent WRs, we have 4 (B Marsh, E Royal, Stokely, Gaffney). I’ll be okay with calling a draw, but lean towards Broncos having better receivers for sure. See some of the other threads on this blog…I’d be worried about our WRs for sure if I were you guys.
Especially if you think match-ups (which is all McDaniels thinks about)…We have Champ and Goodman to match up with your WRs. Who you got that can handle ours? I don’t think you even have 4 CBs that can play with these guys.

Way off
WR and TE are massive positions of strength. You’re probably vastly underrating Floyd and Naanee, who I wouldn’t swap for Stokely and Gaffney at all.

Our WR's are very good. Our TE's are very good.
Lets look at our Wideouts, V-Jax=6’5, MFloyd=6’5, Naanee=6’3 (And FAST), Chambers is our only reciever that is not massive.
As for TE’s, you cannot even come close to arguing that you have a TE as good as Gates.
Here is the new question…DO YOU have the CB’s to cover our guys? Baltimore sure as hell didn’t.

See above
I already addressed this. Your WRs aren’t scary at all…you go look up our secondary. Yes they can and will match up with your guys.
And it isn’t that we have a TE as good as Gates, it is that we have TE depth…Graham and Scheffler are the bomb.
One or both of us are wrong…we’ll see Monday.

Well…yeah, I would be…Brees is playing out of his mind.
But really, honestly — no your WRs don’t scare me in the least. We have a defense now. You may be able to score points, but you aren’t going to be all “Air Rivers” on us…that just isn’t going to happen.
Fearless, maybe…stupid, no.
Either way we see tonight. I promise I’ll be back after the game to eat my words if I’m wrong.

Lets brake this down...
It takes two men to cover V-Jax, Believe me, you cannot argue your way out of that.
For your own dignity, you shouldn’t cover Gates with a linebacker, any linebacker not named Patrick Willis cannot handle Gates alone.
Then comes in Darren Sproles in the flat, If you don’t commit defenders to preventing this play, you will pay dearly…You learned this last year.
So, that leaves 6’5 Malcom Floyd singke covered on the perimeter or deep (Rivers can throw one hell of a long ball), Naanee loosely covered (at best) underneath…And quiet possibly Chambers on the field as well, with single coverage. I like our odds :)

Homerism at its best
Your logic is seriously flawed if you think that. There is a football world outside of San Diego. There are great receivers out there besides your own.
I’ve always thought Gates is one of (if not the) best TE in the league…yeah I covet him for sure. But I wouldn’t trade your WRs and TEs for ours. OVERALL we have more talent and versatility in our group and it is perfect for our offense.
I do get your analogy, but I respectfully disagree.

Your logic is seriously flawed if you think that. There is a football world outside of San Diego. There are great receivers out there besides your own.
Substitute San Diego for Denver and it can be used to describe what you’re saying.
Not being scared of our WRs because you trust in your secondary is fine. Claiming they aren’t very good is so incredibly off the mark it gives you zero credibility.
Den vs SD receivers is a debatable issue. Personally I feel your top 2 may be better but our depth is superior. TE isn’t close. Scheffler and Graham don’t touch Gates and Manumaleunu is reliable when called upon as a pass catcher but he’s msotly asked to block and he’s very good at it. Pass catching TE depth is not important for us, given the size and speed of our WRs.
by gman87 on Oct 19, 2009 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Total fail man.
Don’t put words in my mouth. Go back up and read the thread. I said I think the WRs should be a draw at the least, favoring Denver maybe. My statement was NOT that they were bad, it was that ours were really good and I wouldn’t trade them.
You can keep your credibility comments dude…I could care less what you think of me.
I do like your last paragraph there…it is quite the nice touch given the production of our TEs in this game. (And for the record you are preaching to the choir about pass catching TE…I am a firm believer in the importance of the blocking TEs too…see Daniel Graham)

Irony part 2?
You fail at basic reading.
My post had little to do with proving you wrong over the SD vs Den debate. I said it was debatable. I.e. it isn’t clear enough one way or the other to categorically claim an opinion one way is correct.
My biggest problem was you saying we had only two decent receivers. I take ‘not decent’ to mean ‘not very good’. Floyd and Naanee are more than decent. Vincent Jackson isn’t terribly far off becoming an elite receiver given his progression in the last couple of seasons.
Not all of my post there was a direct response to just that quote. It was a response to accusations of homerism and underrating other teams receivers because of said homerism.
To say Floyd and Naanee aren’t decent while Gaffney is? Yeah, flip that argument back onto yourself.
It’s cute you think one game like that is enough to make that paragraph incorrect. Gates is a better TE than Scheffler. You could Poll this on every NFL SBNation blog and it’d be a land slide. You won the game, no need to come here trolling, claiming you had the last laugh.
I feel fully vindicated in my post, regardless of anything that happened in the game.

I can’t help get caught in this little debate but you are really failing at basic logic here.
Sadaraine is NOT saying your WRs aren’t very good. He IS saying Denver’s are very good too, just as good if not more so.
Here is the basic equivalence: saying I am smarter than you doesn’t mean you are dumb.

Didn’t he have more receiving yards than Royal, Stokely and Gaffney combined?
Naanee was quiet, so was Floyd in the second half, but that had a hell of a lot more to do with the pressure on Rivers than their talent levels.

Everyone needs to think at halftime vs Denver
Our coaches are doing something extraordinary to adjust at half-time…it is just sick how we have been owning 2nd halves…

We scored 3 points
Most you’ve given up since week 1 so we had some success.

That is a win sorta
Your first drive looked very impressive in the 2nd half.

Some success may be a reach
But its the best success since the CInci game against your Defense and the most points you have given up in a game.

Well, yeah your 1st half was awesome
but we were talking about the 2nd half.

Points your defense has given up in the 2nd half
Game 1-7
Game 2-0
Game 3-0
Game 4-0
Game 5-0
Game 6-3
To say that it wasn’t the best success since Cinci is wrong. We didn’t make the adjustments but that doesn’t mean we didn’t play the 2nd best 2nd half against that D and the best game against that D, so far.

Clearly not...I'll fetch the numbers for you
Player Rec Yds TDs Long
M. Floyd 3 51 0 20
B. Marshall 5 49 0 15
J. Gaffney 1 27 0 27
B. Stokley 3 24 1 11
If you are going to try to throw stats out like that, don’t throw in excuses for your guys. Rivers is superbly talented enough to get them the ball…much respect for our Defense for shutting you down the 2nd half…maybe if your WRs were better, they could have picked up a 1st down. ;)

Royal, Stokely and Gaffney! Didn’t say Marshall.
Looks like I got the stats slightly wrong though, so I’ll correct myself.
Floyd had the same amount of receiving yards as Royal, Stokely and Gaffney combined.

K...I'll bite
If we are going to throw in Royal, then let’s add his return yards and scores into the mix. ;)
(My apologies for throwing Marshall in…that was a mistake on my part)

Ah, but I assumed we’re talking about receiving ability and performance only. Especially since as the positional breakdown posted had a seperate segment for special teams.
So Royals returns are another debate entirely. ;)

Not a bad read, but for future reference this sort of thing should be posted as a FanShot, not a FanPost.
