Around SBN: Sean Keeley's Week 12 College Football Buffet

These are not the words of a team coming off an embarrassing loss on national television, a group that for the third straight season has yet to find its collective step in the early going.

"It's a quiet confidence," running back LaDainian Tomlinson said Wednesday when asked how the Chargers were feeling going into Monday's game against the Denver Broncos. "You look in each man's eyes in that locker room, you can tell there is something extra."

Later, quarterback Philip Rivers voiced the same sentiment without being asked specifically about Tomlinson's comments.

"I think we're going to be a real confident bunch out there Monday night," Rivers said. "The bye week allowed us to kind of zero in on ourselves. It allowed us to get some guys healthy. We have no reason not to be confident.

"We didn't play well in our last outing. But sitting at 2-2 with 12 to play, we obviously know how big this is. There no reason this can't be our best year yet. Home on Monday night, I would expect us to be at our best."

Ugh

I hate this. Where is the accountability? Where is the desire to get better? This team seems to think “Yeah, we’re 2-2, but we’re still a good team.” That’s just not the case right now. Do they realize that if they lose this week their season is nearly over?

If you can look into each man’s eyes and see something extra, why have they been holding back? So the team can remain confident in their abilities even if they’ve looked awful on the field. Is that something be proud of? Denial does not necessarily make a football team good, or in this case better than they’ve been.

I believe in PR17's ability as a leader

If there is something wrong with attitude he’ll fix it.

who says there is no desire to get better?

Rivers acknowledges they haven’t been at their best. Confidence is better than a fold the tent attitude, and confidence after some poor performances certainly doesn’t equate to over-confidence. What could they say in this situation that would make you feel better? “We’ve sucked, and haven’t given our all, but now its on the line so we’re going to go balls out”? They are still a good team, that has been banged up and haven’t played their best.
If anybody has been “holding back”, they will be gone or sitting on the bench. I believe that. I don’t think its a case of denial at all. Maybe LT didn’t convey the mood of the team correctly by saying “something extra”. Maybe he meant a renewed sense of purpose and focus. I can’t believe anyone on the team thinks they can turn it on or off like a light switch (save SM). I’m glad they seem to get that this is near do or die.
If they lose and say “it’s ok, we still have plenty of time left”, I will Totally agree with what you said. I understand it now, but feel just a little more optimistic than you about their attitude this week.

LT certainly seemed fired up last game

Asking the defense for a bit of heart and imploring them to make the stop (not sure it did much good though).

A lot of proof will be in the pudding this week. Lose and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear some rumblings of discontent from within, win and hopefully they’ll show their bonding through adversity. The seeming fact that they need adversity to bond through is more than annoying, but we can’t do anything about that this year.

Going to be very interesting to see how both the defense AND offense start of this game.

I think that LT is fine.

The problem last time was that when you fall behind 21-0, it kind of removes the running plays from your game plan.

Yup

The few carries LT got he looked really good.

Yep but

my point was more about him being fired up on the sidelines in the last quarter, trying to motivate the team.

John was arguing that LT and Rivers should be saying we need to get better, and I thought LT’s energy and actions on the sidelines indicated a fierce desire for the team to get better. (I’m not sure it helped though.)

Recced.

We actually don’t know much about either team. This one will tell us what’s what. If the offense can start fast, and continue to play all game, we can win it. Frankly, though, I’ll only be confident against a team like Denver if we get a prohibitive lead. I’m not sure we can do that. This is a game of emotion… and I think that if this Chargers team is playing well they can crush just about anybody.

Silent but deadly...

might be the approach?..perhaps.? who knows? quiet/silence is scary… but I think it might be a good thing. It surely got quiet w/ them ESPN NFL sports men. After praising the Chargers being the AFCWest Champs, Playoffs and superbwl before season started are alllllll QUIET! <—- I hate that and Now that they’re all quiet it prolly helps the Chargers players think more about playing a game to win it instead of hearing that its a game they’ll win…

Monday’s game to me will show how good or bad the Chargers are and of course let me add the Broncos to this statement. Whatever confidence they have I’ll take it, just as long as they show it on the field come game day…

Silence is golden but could always be deadly!!!

This is a good spot for the Chargers

Coming off the bye. At home on Monday night.

Playing against a Broncos team everybody’s already crowning as a Super Bowl contender.

Everytime people start doubting the Chargers they slap you in the face and remind everyone how good they are.

I expect things to even out in the next 3 weeks.

San Diego has Denver, @KC and then Oakland.

Denver has @ San Diego, @Baltimore and then Pittsburgh.

I expect San Diego to go 3-0 and Denver to go 0-3.

Even if Denver wins 1 of those games it’ll be tied with San Diego going 4-0 in the division.

What do you expect them to say?

Gotta say something. Can’t say much. Gotta sound confident. Can’t sound cocky. Gotta admit realities. Can’t give your problems more than a nod.

I admire the restraint. Very well-chosen comments, guys. I hope it’s true! Kick dem Donkeys! Get a good start, victimize ‘em on special teams and offense, don’t break on D. Lots of multi-WR stuff, but don’t be afraid to run the ball once they go to nickel, but never let off the gas, ’cause they come back as well as we do (less dynamic, more consistent, similar result).

Norv

should adhere to some “quiet confidence” when it comes to play calling. YOU CANNOT RUN UP THE MIDDLE WITH SPROLES.

Sigs are for attention whores.

Or

WITHOUT Hardwick as well.

Do or do not. There is no try.

c'mon man

they couldn’t run up the middle, with hardwick.

I've heard more than one person claim

And a few others imply that Hardwick would have fixed the protection on the play where Lewis came free.

I believe it 100%.

Nick has been playing center a lot longer than Mooch. Plus, he’s played Ray Lewis and the Ravens multiple times.

Moreover, there would have been fewer delay-of-game penalties, as Nick wouldn’t have needed the extra time for Rivers to tell him to playcall and protection scheme. That’s an extra 4 points at least.

We miss Nick a lot.

Greg Maddux for manager.

That’s an extra 4 points at least.

Try 7, as we would have kicked a FG on that final 4th down.

by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Oct 16, 2009 9:49 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

When I said that

I was referring just to the field goal at the end of the first half. Without the delay of game, we sneak it and it’s a touchdown.

But you’re right, because if we had then done that, we could have kicked a FG at the end and probably would have won the game by a point.

Greg Maddux for manager.

by maestro876 on Oct 16, 2009 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But if we had Nick the whole game

we probably would have scored more, and wouldn’t have been trailing at the end.
