SS Clinton Hart Released by the San Diego Chargers
The Associated Press: Chargers release Hart, sign Scott
The Chargers released starting strong safety Clinton Hart on Wednesday in order to sign defensive tackle Ian Scott. The Chargers need depth on the defensive line due to the loss of tackle Jamal Williams, out for the season with a triceps injury.
Chargers cut Hart, sign DT Ian Scott
With an ailing and struggling defensive line and a key Monday Night matchup with Denver fast-approaching, the Chargers signed free agent defensive tackle Ian Scott on Wednesday.
The five-year veteran has 95 tackles and two sacks in a career spent mostly with the Chicago Bears. He was a member of the Chargers roster for four games in 2008 but saw limited action.
To make room for Scott, San Diego cut Clinton Hart, who has started 33 games at safety since 2007. He has 16 tackles in four games for a unit that ranks 12th against the pass and has come under a great deal of criticism.
Chargers cut starting safety Hart | ProFootballTalk.com
Hart doesn't have a big name, but he's started 33 out of the 34 games he's played since 2007, so the move should resonate on a defense where there are a number of jobs reportedly up for grabs.

i'm going out on a limb..
and assuming it was mainly the defense that was put on notice. because of thier poor performance, the offense had no real chance of creating a “balanced” attack.

This has everything to do with Ellison
You remember him duck. He’s the one who led SC in tackles when they blew out Oregon last year. So don’t tell me “He can’t cover”. This is a move in the right direction. We also are going to see two defensive tackles on the field more. I speculate by the end of the year AJ will be receiving much praise for sniffing out Ellison in the draft. Looks like this old tackling dummy’s theories are being implemented. You fantasy boys spend way to much time breaking down the
numbers and stats and not enough time paying attention to the action and momentum on the field. I hope this post is literate enough for that smug one Richard.

I may be in the minority in that I love Ellison
He hits like an anvil but just gets torched against fast wide recievers. I hope he doesn’t get stuck on a guy like Jeremy Maclin, Steve Smith, or Ocho Cinco this year or he’ll be smoked.

You are not in the minority
I think everyone is pulling for Ellison to be a stud safety. However, many of us are wary of a guy who missed most of his final season in college football, is a little big for his position and don’t really see him as a FShen we already have a SS in Weddle.

I'm not sure what this talk is about Weddle being a strong safety.
Isn’t he listed as the starting FS? And wasn’t one of the changes Rivera was supposed to bring in was to allow Weddle to be a true Free Safety, which was his best position in college?

John and I had big argument in the offseason about Weddle
And I think John convinced me that Weddle doesn’t really have the skills to be a FS.
I also believe that Weddle current plays SS for the Chargers. My memory seems to have him on the strong side (with Jammer and Castillo) and Gregory/Hart on the weak side with Cro and DE turnstile.

That's strange.
In light of what was written going into the season:
Ron Rivera, with his first offseason to tinker with the defense, has moved Weddle to more of a true free safety position.
"Probably the biggest thing we decided we had to do was we had to try to keep Eric in a position of what he’s natural at, and that’s free safety," Rivera said. "We try not to bring him down in the box too much. Some of our defenses we have to, but not on a consistent basis where 40 to 50 percent of the time he’s in the box.
Greg Maddux for manager.

I mean, maybe they've made changes since that was written
but one of the changes Rivera was going to do to supposedly make our defense better was to let Weddle be a “true free safety”. And if they’ve gone back on that already, then it hurts my confidence in Rivera.
Greg Maddux for manager.

If you can't stop the run...
you gotta play more to the box. Blame Rivera for not adjusting, but wait for Tuesday morning at least before you do, cool?

Just looked at the Week 4 NFL Gamebook
They list Weddle as the FS and Hart as the SS. However, I just don’t recall Weddle playing anywhere but the strong side. Maybe Rivera’s system has the strongside safety play in a style similar to FS?
FWIW, Gamebook lists Ellison and Gregory as SS and Oliver and Spillman as FS.

?
I’m confused how this means they’re going with a 4-3? Also, all this means is that they needed a roster spot for Ian Scott and Hart was an overpaid, old backup. They’d rather have Ellison be the 2nd string SS than Hart. Ellison will most likely not be starting.

And yes, I still believe that Ellison cannot cover well; You have to remember, on his USC defense, he will probably be the lowest draft pick in the draft once everyone graduates. He was surrounded by superstars…It really helps your productivity to be in this situation.

Well...
The releasing of Hart was overdo. Addition by subtraction, hopefully. The defensive backfield can’t be much worse, but it’s not gonna get much better until next year. My hunch is that management and coaches were fed up with his lousy play as opposed to excited about the development of someone playing behind him.
And how does AJ and his brain trust go about addressing the need on the D line? By signing — excuse me, re-signing — a guy they cut before the season started and had on the team last year but never played! That’s subtraction by addition.

Similar to Forney, I think Scott was brought in last year to “learn the system” and get healthy. And be an emergency body. In both guy’s cases, the year off didn’t help them stay healthy in the preseason.

Andy you are right
Although I did hear a sound bite of Norv saying he was impressed with how Ellison played in the Miami game. I might sound like an Ellison honk, actually I’m just frustrated with this brand of charger defense. Ellison could possibly make a difference on third and short. Improvement on third down defense is desperately needed. As far as Ian Scott is concerned, I feel we are going to see two defensive tackles on the field. By the way, the kids who run this blog do a great job. This is my first venture into the “blogosphere” and i’m hooked.

I thought Ellison played well in Miami, but it also showed me how little they trusted him. He was only in on goal-line situations, where he wasn’t responsible for any down-field coverage.

Why Scapegoat Hart?
Must be more to this story or Clinton Hart just got “scapegoated”.
“Hey Chargers” if the Defense especially the DB’s are tackling poorly and in the wrong scheme maybe the coaching and their philosophy has something to do with it. How many sacks do Merriman and Phillips have combined? ZERO! Things that make you say HMMMM?HEY Def play with some passion and heart this week against Denver and they won’t score 20 points, play like soft, lifeless, swiss cheese and Rivers will need to put up 40+ to win.

I don't see it as scapegoating no matter what Hart says.
I can’t blame him for being emotional; I know how it feels to do your best and get fired anyway, and it sucks. But they kept Hart because they have five young safeties and can’t afford for them to go bust if they let him go. But it looks like Hart isn’t a big step up over the better 3 of these kids (Weddle, Gregory, Ellison) who are all on their way up, and Hart’s as good as he’s going to ever be. You need to shore up the DL, so you need a roster spot… just business.
If Rivera pans Hart to the media, you can talk about scapegoating: he was part of the problem, but just one part among many, and at least he was doing his best. This move is about getting younger at safety and shoring up at DT. Hart will be a backup somewhere where they got a promising young guy and just want insurance for two or three years. Or he can be the UFL’s version of Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu rolled into one. Or he can take his rags-to-riches story as-is and retire.

Sometimes, you're just not the guy.
When I was 19, I got a job as a window washer. I loved the work, liked the money, and got my windows very clean. But I’m a big fella, and high-end residential window-washing just isn’t a big man’s job. I was constantly finding myself on roofs that would barely hold my weight, and I was squeezing into spots that really weren’t made for people, and constantly bumping my head. To make it worse, a major element of the job when those funny spaces wasn’t an issue was crossing the body with the arm in a windmill-like motion, and doing so as quickly and safely as possible. My buddy who got the job was like five-foot six, and except on the big picture windows there was no way I could keep up. So one night we were all out for beers, and the boss told me she had to let me go. C’est la vie. Got a retail job after that, where I got to talk to people and move big heavy stuff around on high shelves, lasted most of the way through college.

Agreed.
I think this was more about needing another body on the defensive line and thus needing to free up a roster spot. Obviously we had more safeties than we needed so the most expendable of them was cut. Seems simple enough to me.

Question
Do you think it has anything to do with money? I don’t think Hart was making that much but it just seems like weird timing.
They must REALLY like Spillman to keep him on the roster even after all those injuries on the OL and DL. Now, they cut their most experienced safety for 2 rookies and a 2nd year guy (Oliver, or is he in his 3rd season?).

HARD. Yeah speed is speed but he will mostly be covering short down situations, TEs, WRs going down the middle, etc. This guy knows how to lay down wood. Other than Jammer, who else in our secondary has the knack/size to do this? I’m all for this shake up. Hope Rivera calls few safety blitzes.

What have they got to lose?
I think this move accomplishes several things. One, it sends a message that poor play could get you canned. Two, it gets the young players some playing time and allows them to see “what they got”. And as stated, it freed up a spot to add another D lineman. They realized that they needed to do something to try and stop the run. Whether it works or not is yet to be seen. I remember reading in the off season that AJ said several players were on notice, that this was a make or break year for them. If cromartie doesn’t get his stuff together, he make get cut. If they don’t start playing better, then this year may turn out to be an “evaluation” year where they decide what needs to be done in the off season to rebuild.

We have Nick Hardwick out at least until December, probably a non-factor for the remainder of the year. We could have IR’d Nick to free up a spot and kept Hart.
If they didn’t like Hart as a starter, they could have bumped him down. But cut him and cut our depth?

screwing the pooch that night. They were playing their only game for the entire season (I don’t consider the WAC a conference), and we just kind of sucked. We are a much improved team now…If we played again-we would win!
A much needed bye week; and two whole weeks to focus the inner hatred of UW even moreso than normal.
Locker...Welcome to my profile, You will be formally introduced by Juju at a later date, 10/23 to be more specific!

ESPN Accuscore
I was on the ESPN website earlier today and I saw that Brandon Marshall has had little to no success when matched up against Jammer, and about 90+% of his success against the Chargers D when Cromartie is covering him. So they suggested Jammer should cover Marshall at all times. Personally, I like that idea, as Jammer is probably the most steady player on D this year.

Well.... Yeah ?
Who else is physical enough to defend Marshall?? Of course its got to be Jammer, Marshall climbs over / runs over any of the other CBs. At least Jammer make him pay the price and makes the tackle.

Uh-huh.
As much as possible, Jammer on the #1, in this case BM. When Cro has to cover BM, you have to give him help.

Can we PLEASE draft Ali Villanueva of Army this year??? I'd mortgage a kidney for a tackle/wideout hybrid.
