Yeah he sucks but we have depth issues
Hopefully this means a trade is in the works!

We signed Ian Scott
He can’t play SS, though

True
Gregory has outplayed Hart, but I don’t like Gregory much as the starter.

Doubt it
Especially not against a passing offense like Denver’s.

Oh Oh Oh!
The Indianapolis Colts waived starting defensive tackle Ed Johnson. Does this help us?

If his offense (even if there was one) is minor enough to fly under the radar of Goodell I’m for signing him.

This is what I'm thinking.
This could be a weird day or two.
But I have to wonder why AJ didn’t do this sooner. If he was going to make big changes, why not do it earlier in our 2 week break?

Because it takes two to tango
Other teams may not have been ready yet.
Not that I think anything is going to happen, but that’s the reason why he wouldn’t be able to do something earlier.

Plus Rivera "put the defense on notice" that nobody was safe
Maybe Hart was doggin’ it at practice or they just did like what they saw out of him?

Hart was done.
All heart, just declined below the minimum level of ability (a couple “aptronyms” on this team, like Jammer). Congrats on making an NFL career, man, and thanks for the memories.
Hopefully this means we’re getting either a good safety or a nose tackle. Ian Scott is a better option than most options at this point… but he’s not the cure for what ails us.

I'm wondering why...
Rivera hasn’t thrown in any 4-3 looks as of yet. We’ve been getting blown off the line of scrimmage since J-Wall went down. And a quality NT for a 3-4 alignment is nowhere to be found on our roster. I was getting a bit tired of Hart making an oxymoron of his position, and I’d like to see Ellison in there. With all of the zone we’ve been playing; I’d like to see some hitting going on. We’ve looked like creampuffs so far in that respect…
by BleedsBlueNgold on Oct 14, 2009 11:28 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
From an earlier conversation
The defense has generally been less effective with four down linemen this year.

by Richard Wade on Oct 13, 2009 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Richard…
it was ineffective in 08’ with 3 down linemen. i think the problem is simply much more deeper than switchng allignments. and that should be (obvious) by now. 4-3 or 3-4 try either one, but it won’t matter. from what i’ve seen on tape they seem to be trying to get the players to play within a boxed scheme. and they’ve never done that until Wade left. he alwyas seem to adjust his schemes to the players abilities, and it worked. as well in dallas.
The peanut gallery has spoken!!!

They’re ineffective in most sets right now. I’m just pointing out that they’ve been at their worst playing with four down linemen.

My over-simplified definition of a "perfect" 3-4 and 4-3 defense
3-4: Big NT and ends who soak up blockers, creative blitz packages featuring safeties and OLBs, and MLBs who tend towards coverage.
4-3: Two bodies in the middle who try to collapse the pocket, two quicker pass-rushing ends, and linebackers with somewhat less range (but efficient tacklers).
The Chargers’ ideal 3-4 scheme has gone to hell with the injuries to Williams, Merriman, Castillo, Cesaire, Burnett, Ron Rivera’s brain…
However. Implementing a 4-3 would not work simply because we don’t have the personnel for it. Would you move Castillo inside and have a line of Martin, Nwagbuo, he and Cesaire? Doesn’t work. Martin has nice explosion but even running flat-out wouldn’t be a good rush end. I have always had a gripe with Jacques because he can’t seem to beat his man, ever, on passing downs. OG may be able to play end, but also doesn’t suit the scheme.
So what, you say? We’ll bump English and perhaps Philips to end?
Nope. They’re undersized and would get pimpslapped by opposing tackles. Look at the ones coming up on our schedule over the next 5 weeks:
Ryan Clady (solid) and some other guy
Kareem McKenzie and David Diehl (big, tough fellas)
Jason Peters and Winston Justice (studs)
[Also those of the Raiders and Chiefs, who are of no concern.]
Also, that puts Applewhite or Tucker on the field on every play. That is a big no-no.
Maybe Merriman!
Absolutely not. How would his knee/groin hold up in a more physically rigorous position than OLB?
So you see, it just doesn’t work. Enough talk about all this and let’s just get the hell on with it.

i get the argument against the 4-3, but i don’t really understand the whole “undersized” bit.
The giants defensive ends are roughly the same size as Shawne and Shaun, and Robert Mathis from the colts is about the same size as Applewhite/Tucker/English. It is possible from a size standpoint, but could the chargers guys play as well as the others?
Still, I agree a switch to the 4-3 wouldn’t help much.

I was wondering for those of you that look closely at the game tape
How does clinton hart play? could you give us a bit of a run down on how he plays and how much of the shit talking was warranted?
by nicklusk on Oct 14, 2009 11:31 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
The knocks against Hart are that he doesn’t have the skills to start anymore. He’s not fast enough, strong enough and he’s a very poor tackler. Is he usually in the right position? He certainly tries to be, and doesn’t make a ton of mental mistakes. The fact of the matter is that he can’t cover anybody and he’s not good against the run. At this point he’s a backup at best, and Ellison offers more potential there.

I just pray that Gregory isn’t the starter now bc he’s just as bad as Hart. I wouldn’t mind either Ellison to start or some type of trade to be worked out with someone. As much as we bash this secondary, our pass rush needs major improvements.

I looked it up
He played safety his freshman and sophomore seasons. He started at safety his junior season, but lost that year to injury. He then moved to corner for his redshirt junior and senior seasons where he became the consensus top CB in the draft. This is kind of typical of the Texas defense though and the wide open passing games of the Big 12. The younger guys play safety and the veterans go to CB. I think Aaron Ross or Cedric Griffin did the same at Texas.
He also played safety, linebacker and running back in high school (but not corner).

In the past anyone who suggested Jammer be moved to safety was rightly shot down.
But a few weeks ago there was actually an article in the UT where Jammer stated he believes that’s where he’ll end up, and that it will help him extend his career with the Chargers.

Hey fellas, have you heard the news?
You know that Ian is back in town?
It wont take long just watch and see
How the fellas lay their money down.
His style is new but the face is the same
As it was so long ago,
But from his eyes, a different smile
Like that of one who knows.
Well, its been ten years and maybe more
Since I first set eyes on you;
The best years of my life gone by,
Here I am alone and blue.
Some people cry and some people die
By the wicked ways of love;
But Ill just keep on rollin along
With the grace of the lord above.
People talkin all around bout the way you left me flat,
I dont care what the people say, I know where their jive is at.
One thing I do have on my mind, if you can clarify please do,
Its the way you call me by another guys name when I try to make love to you!

I heard some comments recently (probably from Acee though) that basically said the Chargers were high on Scott, but injuries made him a roster cut casualty. I guess they think he’s healthy again. If nothing else, it gives us a fresh body to throw at the problem. Not terribly exciting though.

I've been saying sign Ian Scott since week 2
And was being criticized for it. It’s not the same help someone like Shaun Rogers would provide but it’ll help a lot more than that bum we got from the Texans. Watch that draft pick we gave for him turn into some sleeper stud for them, F’n H!

I was not expecting this...
I do not feel comfortable at safety now…For some reason, I cannot stand Steve Gregorty back there, I just cannot do it!
A much needed bye week; and two whole weeks to focus the inner hatred of UW even moreso than normal.

You felt comfortable before? Gregory was playing most of the time there anyways. This is neither an improvement nor a decline.

EXACTLY!
“neither an improvement nor a decline”, If a situation such as this is applied to a position of poor performance….It is not exactly a comfortable sitation in my book. The only reason to maintain comfort before was some depth that had game experience. Now all we have left besides Gregory, is Ellison and Spillman…Yes, they could play well I’m sure, But there sure is not a whole lotta game experience between the two of them!

I would put antonio cromartie there just like he used to

Antonio Cromartie used to play SS? What is Charger Station?

Yeah, that never happened. The closest he’s gotten is playing the deep man on hail mary coverage.

Why? What is served by putting him at a position his skills are even less suited to?

Cuz BFTB_Zach thinks its a good idea
I think the Chargers should run a Rocky Long 3-3-5 defense. (Actually, that’s not an awful idea with our personal…)

I'm not sure this stands on it's own as "addition via subtraction"
I still think there has to be more in the works here, otherwise this makes no sense. There has to be either a trade in the works, or one of the darkhorses like Spillman or Ellison has really shown something in practice.
by BoltDaddy on Oct 14, 2009 4:19 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
It's simple
The team was already considering Gregory as the better safety compared to Hart and A.J. decided they needed a roster spot and didn’t see the use for (another) backup safety who didn’t contribute on special teams.

No.
Might work with Cromartie in zone coverage, but if he gets stuck covering tight ends… watch out, they’ll roll right over him.
Weddle is a very good FREE safety because of his hustle and nose for the ball. He isn’t bad in run support, but why take him out of a position where he could be All-Pro?
Cason I could live with as a starter; he’s got good instincts. Don’t know how hard/securely he tackles, but he does put up good numbers doing so: 74 as a rookie while starting only 3 games.

Cason is a great tackler
Not far behind Jammer in that category
Personally, I love the idea of Weddle as a SS because he’s such a good blitzer. I just don’t like the other options at FS (unless Oliver suddenly blossoms).

I'd play Eric Weddle anywhere.
Hell, wasn’t he a running back in high school? Sign him up.
I’m just opposed to moving Weddle because he’s not the cement-truck hitter most top-flight SS’s are expected to be (Polamalu, Lynch, Harrison, et. al.)

Even if he dosen't hit like a truck, and thus miss many tackles attempting to do so...
He never misses the tackle, Is that really a bad thing?

True dat.
My point is even though he is effective, he’s not going to head off many RB’s at the line of scrimmage, let alone have opposing recievers quaking in their shoes.

I've had the same criticism
but he’s getting better at it. I think if he wasn’t responsible for coverage so much he’d be a bigger hitter. I also think those across-the-middle hits have more to do with being in the right position (his specialty) than anything else. He’s clearly big enough to play the position if Sanders and Polamalu are playing it.

It would be nice
to have a safety that put the fear of god in receivers crossing the middle; Weddle isn’t that guy. Yeah, I know he laid out Johnnie Lee Higgins, the exception that proves the rule.

Yah my point too
It better for cromartie
by BFTB_zach on Oct 14, 2009 7:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Weddle An all pro?
Cromartie has the nose for the ball.Remember his rookie year? He reads the quarterback, thats why he sucks at corner, he covers by brail. In a 34 d you can hit a tight end at the line and release him to a safety which you have to do with most tightends anyways, and you can forget about anybody covered by Jammer. He will probably never be an all pro because he doesn’t have the int’s, but in my opinion he’s one of the best in the league
by RTChargerfan on Oct 14, 2009 5:43 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Having interceptions does not mean you have a nose for the ball. Cromartie got those picks because they were throwing at him, testing him. Weddle is in on the tackle for almost every play, even if it’s all the way across the field. He knows where the ball is going and gets there. That’s what makes him different.
Cromartie would be so weak in run support. I don’t even want to think about that.

Yeah, he’s really weak coming up on running plays and against physical receivers.
