Greetings from MileHighReport - A Few Good Questions with a Broncos Blogger
Greetings Chargers fans! Guru here from Mile High Report checking in as we get set for Chargers/Broncos week!
I don't think I have to beat around the bush here, this is a huge football game for both teams. The Chargers are the big man on campus in the AFC West and deservedly so. I know many consider last year to be the Broncos collapsing, but the Chargers had plenty of chances to give up and never did. That is a testament to the coaches and players on the roster.
Many would say that worked out for the best, for the Broncos anyway. Out is Mike Shanahan, Jay Cutler and most importantly all the drama. It's all about football in Denver again, and that is a wonderful thing.
Another week of the throwbacks unis. I'm sure you saw the 'so ugly they are beautiful' versions of the vertical socks the Broncos were wearing. The Chargers? Well, I like the powder blue the best and think they should be the full-time uniform even today.
Anyway, I thought I would stop by and answer any Broncos-related questions you might have. I'm not into smack-talk, there will be plenty of posts on both sites for that I imagine, but if you have serious football questions regarding the Broncos I'd love to read them!
So, got a Broncos question? Fire away! I'll check back in regularly to get those questions answered! I'd appreciate a REC so that the post can stay at the top for the week!
Here's to a great week of cross-blogging and to a great game on Monday!

Hi John...
I have a question. Should we have a token conversation here…to be polite…or just let them know the truth?
Ok, straight from the hip:
Rivers: Lights out deep ball, but immature (see:Cutler)
Sproles: Lights out, period…but we will stop him
LT: MUST play big in order for SD to compete Monday
Regardless…
DENVER: 24
SAN DIEGO: 14

River immature?
Have you ever heard him in an interview, or do you know anything about the person he is?

Rivers is immature? That’s as far from accurate as you can get. Swing and a miss, Bronco_Fan_Tom.

swing and a miss...
…nice jab at my Rockies.
Certainly not a “miss” when referring to Rivers…Child Please!
He’s as big a baby as Cutler. Have a look at him when things go wrong Monday. He will pout and mope all the way to the locker room.

It wasn’t a jab at the Rockies. I have no interest in them. You’re incredibly ignorant of what you’re speaking about and I’m not going to bother responding to you again.

I know he’s not your problem any more, but Cutler:

I can't say I've seen much immaturity from Rivers,
outside of his exchanges with Cutler. Frankly, I’m not proud of either player there. I can’t see Fouts or Elway, or for that matter Orton, getting themselves caught up in anything like that. But I’ll chalk it up to both players being young and competitive. Either way it’s not an issue anymore.

It takes real men to disagree and still be amicable with one another.I don’t pretend to like the Broncos, but I’ll respect their ability and I hope the Broncos fans can respect our BFTB home blog as WE do of their MHR.
BY THE WAY….here’s my Q or Q’s….Do the Bronco’s fanbase consider the Chargers a threat in the division, considering that they look(The Broncos) like the top dog,for now? Do you guys think we can come back and challenge for it at the end like last year?

I have a question John
I’m from MHR, but I’m wondering about Sproles. I’m thinking that LT should be back healthy on Monday, but should be running directly into our defensive line. While Sproles has been struggling without LT, I see this as evidence he’s not an every down back or a pound-the-line runner, rather than as evidence that he’s lost something or was overrated for a short time. Do you see it the same way? How much should Denver fear Sproles and his playmaking ability outside and in-space?
by elvisalex on Oct 13, 2009 12:25 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
ANSWER
I’ll say this, Sproles should be feared because he has had huge games against the Broncos in all phases. Sproles returned a kickoff against the Broncos last year and is a huge threat in an area the Broncos has struggled with this season – the screen game.
The biggest struggle with the Chargers offense, so far, is the O-Line. I think that has affected Sproles, LT and even Rivers, more than anything else.

Sproles is deadly on special teams
And can usually beat guys if he gets into the open. I think Dawkins will have his number unless somebody can get Dawkins’s. But that’s no help on kickoffs.
by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Oct 14, 2009 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
sproles is definitely not an every down back…if LT is healthy and the defense makes enough plays to allow for a run game to develop on offense, then i think the overall run production is gonna see a big increase, whether by committee or singular efforts…if the running game is effective then you really need to worry, because that opens up all types of opportunity for the screen game and throws to the flat…either LT or Sproles in space is scary for any defense to deal with…it should be a good game

How has Peyton Hillis been doing this year under McDaniels' new scheme?
What kind of role has he had so far?

Very little, as of late
Peyton has made some early mental errors, and has been in the “dog house”. He will get it together soon, and get his touches…most likely to pound the ball in the short yardage situations, against San Diego’s porous D-Line.

Hillis is currently 4th on the depth chart.
He is very effective, but a couple of errors (including an intimely fumble) have bumped him down the list. Denver has solid depth at HB. (Hillis is played more as a HB than FB. Denver rarely uses a FB anymore).

Hillis is really struggling. He had a great Training Camp but some mental errors, some fumbles, and the emergence of Correll Buckhalter and Knowshon Moreno have really chewed into his playing time.
I though Hillis would be a weapon in thois offense, in a Chris Cooley, H-Back type of way. That hasn’t materialized so far but I still have hope.

I think "so far" is an importat distinction
I think that Hillis is off the radar partially by design. I expect McD to use him heavily at some point this season, when opposing DCs think they’ve seen everything.
But first, he needs to get his head on straight and play smarter.

Where does Dumervil typically line up? I was trying to see against the Patriots and I saw him going against their RT quite a bit. Is this normal?

The Broncos have done a good job moving Doom around to get the favorable matchup. Credit the Patriots and Tom Brady for getting the ball out quickly. The Broncos were only able to get to Brady once, but that one play resulted in a turnover.
Rivers is similar – he is good at seeing the blitz – so the Broncos may have a hard time getting to him as well.

Rivers has thrown over Bailey a couple of times
But why target Champ, I thought it was extremely stupid of the Cowgirls to target him all day especially at the end of the game on the same exact play, sorry if it comes down to that rivers is a bit smarter then romo.

Jackson and Rivers have had Bailey's number to date.
Past performance, future results… but it’s really hard to cover San Diego’s WR squad, especially when the o-line is playing in good form. Whether that will happen depends on a lot of factors, but you can’t help but think the Chargers will be motivated, at home, in powder blue, in a must-win game.
by Neoplatonist Bolthead on Oct 14, 2009 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Bailey has a lot more help this year
With more than adequate support on the other side and a couple of very good safeties over the top, Champ is playing like he’s ten (okay, five) years younger. Not that he won’t still have difficulty with extra half-foot Chargers WRs bring, but he won’t be on as much of an island.

the patriots are anything but spectacular
let’s not get delusional here, tom isn’t himself yet and the rest of the team looks fairly mediocre as well…also, this chargers team has averaged 28 points a game for five years now…last year 27.4, this year 25.2 with the second most passing yards per game in the league…phillip rivers makes the throws that qb’s you’ve seen so far haven’t and that’s the honest truth…this game should be a good measuring stick for both teams…i still see the broncos going into the bye week 5-1

Maybe its the lack
of rushing yards this year. 53.8 compared to last years 107.9. This is either the injuries are a problem, LT being on the shelf doesn’t bode well for Sproles (both players I have respect for and have seen run on our previous teams)., or the offensive line is declining. Those rushing stats also show that you are going to the passing game and should have a high total in yards this year.
If Denver can get a some good pressure, which can be done with Rivers getting sacked 10 times, then the scales tip to our direction.
I’ll be at work but hoping for a great showing on Monday.

Really he’s been sacked 10 times all year with this line. I don’t see that happening all in one game. Denver has a better defense then most but Rivers also has had to deal with the pressure every game so far.

I'm not trying to start anything,
I’m trying to understand your reasoning here, WARDANE33.
“The Chargers are due.” Lots of teams are due but that doesn’t mean they win.
“Denver is over rated.” Maybe, but if they are, it would be the first time this year. Everybody, and I mean everybody has been picking against the Broncos since January.
“It’s the NFL.” Yes, and any team can lose to any other. I imagine the reverse is also true.
“The Broncos have played over their heads,” Perhaps. How so? Who are these players and why shouldn’t they continue to do so?
“SD hasn’t had any trouble putting up points.” I’ll take your word on that, but they may have had a little trouble putting up enough points. And remember, Denver is a top two defense. That may make it a little harder.
“Denver is due to have a bad game.” See above.
“[The Broncos] are coming off an emotional win over the Pat’s.” That is true and it does worry me. On the other hand I’ve never seen anyone better than Josh McDaniels at getting through all that emotional baggage and getting his team prepared. Granted, he is new at this.
I would think the desperate need for a victory would be a stronger argument for a Chargers win.

Overrated
Pundits think you are greater then you actually are, you guys may be slightly overrated from what people think, while playing over your head has to deal with the players directly playing greatly even if they aren’t. Example of playing over your head, Cromartie’s interception numbers right now it looked like he was playing over his head in 2007 it doesn’t make him overrated just he might have been playing over his head.
by Dude52089 on Oct 14, 2009 6:39 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I see.
That makes sense.
Still, having coached before, I don’t believe in playing over your head. A professional football team doesn’t perform well on accident. We have a superb defense, and with players like Bailey, Dawkins, and Dumervil, I don’t think that they can be accused of playing better than their reputations.
The offense is loaded (Marshall, Royal, Stokley, Scheffler, Graham, Moreno, Buckhalter, and an elite OL). Orton has always been underated (he has many more wins, TDs, and less INTs than Cutler in their years in the NFL – Cutler only wins in yards). Orton has proven he is consistently good – his lone INT through 5 games was an end of half hail Mary pass, and his QB rating in 97. And that’s with a restrictive protective glove through the first 4 games.
We can disagree, but I think Denver has proven they are not only a good team, but a “consistent” good team. Just my opinion.

I am just saying that it’s ridiculous for a team to be “due” anything. You have to earn every W and you have to play every snap. You aren’t owed anything by anyone or any team.
It comes down to execution.

i thought this was a dog show
dude, if you don’t want fans from other teams coming into this blog just say so and i’ll stay here. as far as who i am worried about the most, it is the Dallas Cowboys because they have 5 super bowls. as far as teams on our schedule, i am not worried about the Bronco’s game. we play cleveland next.
what gives you so much confidence as a Bronco’s fan these days? you’ve beaten 4 teams that have ZERO combined playoff wins in the last 10 years. nothing to get too amped up about, you still have 2/3 of the season to play and change. Cleveland, Oakland and Dallas combined 3 wins on the year. one good thing about being a non-playoff team, you get a weak schedule next year. bring on the Chiefs twice.
by WARDANE33 on Oct 13, 2009 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The reason why we have so much confidence.
Our D only gives up 3.29 yards per attempt. 12.5% of our opponents pass plays end up in a sack or an interception (that’s a little over 1 sack or INT for every 10 times the QB drops back to pass), and our opponents are only successful 28.4% of the time they line up on 3rd down. We have beaten the most teams with winning records this year. We don’t allow points in the 2nd half of games. We play with a chip on our shoulder. We didn’t look past the Browns. We didn’t look past the raiders. We didn’t look past the Cowboys. We sure will not look past the Chargers. We play with humility. We know we aren’t playing as good as we can.
Yes we will loose some games, but not in our division. And we need revenge for ’05 against the Steelers.

good stuff, i wish we could play as well in the fourth quarter as we have in the first 3, we might be like you guys 5-0. i like the Defense, B Dawkins might just be the best off season acquisition of the year and Mike Nolan was a nice pick up by a young coach. mcdaniels is doing a real nice job, best of luck the rest of the way.

Hey Wardane
I’ve always respected the Steelers from my days of growing up in a Wash Redskins/NFC East family: everyone rooted for the Redskins, Eagles and whomever played the Cowboys!
That said, these aren’t the Denver Broncos of the last 3 or 4 years. I am always one to preach “we haven’t done anything yet except start off 5-0.” But I really like our chances vs SD this week. Our confidence seems to come from all the positives coming out of the Broncos headquarters in Dove Valley. It’s an entirely new mindset with this team. And I think the Chargers should be worried as the Broncos are starting to look increasingly more comfortable with Coach’s system.

Its always some random stat or the other ...
Before we beat Dallas it was just the combined win-record of the teams we played that was abysmal. Now that we have beaten Dallas & NE, all of a sudden it is the number of playoff wins that matters most !!!
And now our schedule is “weak”…have you not been listening to any gospel from the MSM?? Broncos have quite possibly the toughest schedule of all this year. You guys get Tenn & Miami (both are average this year) whereas we get Indy & NE. The rest of the schedule is exactly the same…so schedule is a LAME excuse.

Lemme give it a shot!
First, not knocking the Broncos. Undefeated is undefeated. This perspective is the most uncharitable that I think is reasonable, not necessarily mine.
Cincy: Lucky win on a freak play.
Cleveland: Yawn.
Oakland: Yeah, yeah. The Faders put everything into the first two weeks and then fell apart. The Broncos were just beating on a lifeless corpse.
Dallas: Grossly overrated. 6-10 team.
New England: Overtime win in high-drama home game against a once-great team.
Final verdict: We know they don’t suck. They’re totally out of consideration for giving Seattle a top-five draft pick. They’re 2 games ahead of where I thought they’d be when I pegged them to go 5-11 from a 3-2 start. Better than that? Possible. Maybe even likely. Known? No. Their offense isn’t great, and their defense is keyed off of old guys.

And you would still be wrong on the Cowboys.
3-2 record (which means 3-1 if you take out the Denver game). Denver is beating good teams, and their opponents have better records than opponents of Indy, NO, NYGs, and MINN.

Record can really be misleading
They beat the chiefs where they pretty much gave the chiefs the game but bad teams find a way to lose.
Their other two wins against the Bucs who are winless and the Panthers who just got their first win against the team that lost to the Lions.
Cowgirls aren’t good when they played you if they had an accurate QB you would of lost or a QB that stayed away from champ or at least threw away from him occasionally.
by Dude52089 on Oct 13, 2009 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
A win is a win.
Records determine who makes the playoffs and who wins the SB. A team can win big or ugly, but a win is a win. 5 wins sounds pretty good to me. And folks are quick to point out how “weak” Denver’s opponents are (DAL was a big deal – before we beat them. NE was a big deal – before we beat them. Cincy was no big deal, until well after we beat them). But we’ve beaten three good to very good teams. Our opponents have also garnered better records (and against better teams) than the other undefeated teams.
All I’m saying is that this team has proven that it is for real, and it takes a lot of tap dancing to try and prove that it isn’t. I’d rather be in our shoes, arguing that our record speaks for itself, than be in the shoes of trying to make the argument against anyone else’s team.

I agree that a win is a win
If you look at what i was arguing though i was talking about the cowboys and how they weren’t a good team. I never said anything about Denver’s weak opponents other then counting Dallas as a good one.
by Dude52089 on Oct 14, 2009 6:45 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Another quick point...
“… if they had an accurate QB you would of lost or a QB that stayed away from champ…”
So I guess Tom Brady and the Patriots doesn’t count for anything either? I guess the argument there is that, “If they could have outscored you, they would have beaten you”. C’mon. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.
No one is calling your good seasons a fluke, and now it is our turn. A lot of folks thought Denver was a 3-13 team this year (I personaly thought we would be 8-8). They were wrong. When things started to go wrong for those predictions, the media said “Wait until the next game, when they play the Cowboys, or the Patriots”. Now instead of admiting they were wrong, they bash the Cowboys and the Patriots. The funny thing is, they hold up the Bengals.
Denver and SD are the best in the AFC West. Instead of taking jabs at our record, let’s talk football.

do you think the Broncos can win it all or do you think they might be a year or two away. can Kyle Orton really keep up his pace of protecting the football? how do you guys like Moreno? he was a beast at UGA. the only thing i would say about the Bronco’s schedule so far is that they haven’t played a “decent” defense less Cincinnati (can’t believe i just typed that)

My vote is for a year or two
I’m really excited about the direction the team is taking, and I think they can beat anybody; but I think there’s a pretty wide gulf between “can beat anybody” and “beats everybody.”

Again I was talking about the Cowboys not Tom Brady
That Patriot game was completely different. Again im not calling your good start to the season a fluke I’m just pointing out one team that I do not think is a good opponent that you are considering a good opponent. My jab at it they had an accurate QB was i saw Romo miss wide open recievers and throw towards champ side all day. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out champ is a great corner, I’ll name two plays if romo would of done something different they might have won.
1. Champ Bailey’s interception, don’t throw it you are guaranteed 3 points at least don’t take a risk like that.
2. 4th down at the end of the game, Running the same play and throwing to the same side? Really couch potato QBs or ones who play madden, and are decent, would of switched the play or at least thrown to the other side, no guarantee of a TD but 2 plays out of the many where i saw mistakes by romo.

Let's get back to more humble, passionate, and reasonable question and debate
I have a couple of questions.
Are there still people in San Diego who feel they should have kept Drew Brees given his success in NO? (Although I have to say I think this ended up being a win-win for both SD and NO, both teams have great quarterbacks I feel)
Has there been any discussion about the decline in production by Merriman since getting caught violating the league’s substance abuse policy. I’’m not trying to stir the part but it seems he had a four game suspension, played lights-out the rest of the year, but hasn’t really been the same since (I know he was injured for a good portion of this time)

With hindsight it would have been great to not have taken Rivers and addressed a need elsewhere but once Rivers was on the roster (and especially given that Brees was injured) I’m prefectly happy with the way things turned out. Factor in the trade results and its an even bigger win.
As for Merriman, his play in 2007 was still pretty good he just didn’t rush as much and our scheme under TC was far less aggressive which doesn’t really suit him. Since then he’s been injured pretty much all the way, and to be honest, while I expected him to get back to 100% almost straight away, at the same time its not really suprising that he’s not there yet
by ramezes on Oct 13, 2009 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Merriman hasn't been the same since the knee injury. He really hasn't fully recovered from it yet.
I’d say the great majority of SD fans are glad we kept Rivers instead of Brees, some fans took longer than others to come to that conclusion however.

The Brees of today was not the Brees we had here in SD. Brees was awful in 2003, which is why we drafted Rivers. I watched every game that season, he showed serious regression from 2002. He tore his shoulder labrum in 2005 — we couldn’t match other teams offers given that injury.
Also, Brees wanted to go to Miami, but they chose Culpepper(!) over him. Brees was furious and rehabbed like a madman. He’s been awesome in NO, and that offense is custom built for him.
So I don’t think Brees is the same QB he is today if he stays in SD. We love Rivers, and Brees loves NO, so I think it worked out well for everyone.

Are you guys a legit top 5 defense?
Going into the season, you had a new DC, lots of new players, a new scheme (3-4). Suddenly, you’re putting up Ravens-esque numbers in your points against column.
Do you feel you are a legit top 5 defense, or do you think you will come back to earth soon? You have to admit, it is a little surprising…
by Stephen (shaynes41) on Oct 13, 2009 3:56 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I think it's a little of both
We have a good solid defense that does some different things. However, the Patriots put up 17 points and I think with their explosive offense SD can put up 20+. So while I don’t think the Defense will keep up it’s current pace the Defense will also help us win more games than lose them for us like last year. Top 5, I don’t know but this is a good, well-coached aggressive defense.

I think we’ll finish the season as a middle of the pack defense statistically. Which is infinitely better than the previous years. We’ve obviously benefited from playing the raiders and browns, but I think the defense is legit. They are a disciplined, hard-hitting defense with moderate talent and excellent leadership.

Top-5, Top-10, honestly it really doesn’t matter to me. I do believe that the Broncos defense is for real. Five games, no matter who the opponents are, is enough of a sample size to determine that. Beyond that, the stats that matter – Yards per carry allowed, 3rd Down Conversion Allowed, Points allowed – all have the Broncos at or very near the top.
This one stat is the most impressive – this season, the Broncos have allowed opponents to convert just 2/31 3rd Downs in the 2nd Half. To go further, the Broncos have not allowed a 2nd Half 3rd Down Conversion in 3 Weeks! The Cowboys were 0/7, the Patriots were 0/7. That shows the coaching staff is making solid adjustments, something that was sorely lacking in the past.

What do you believe are the Broncos biggest weaknesses?
I haven’t watched that many Bronco games, but I did watch most of the second half last week. It seemed Brady missed a few wide open chances (i.e., NE WRs not covered by Champ). How is the rest of the secondary holding up?
Offensively, where does Denver need to improve? Seems like you guys get off to slow starts like we do (this seems completely the opposite of last year, or any Shanahan teams — they always started out fast).

sirbud:
I think the secondary is holding up well. I know a lot of people are writing them off because they are all over 30, but what they lack in flat out speed, they make up for in wisdom and experience.
Offensively, Denver’s Achilles heel is the short running attack. 3rd/4th and short is absolutely killing them right now. Converting the short yardage and extending the drives is the biggest issue right now, by far.

SPECIAL TEAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Two terrible penalties kept the patriots drive alive last week. A neutral zone infraction and a running into the punter. So, the defense stepped up and got the three and outs each time and then they punted a third time. Alphonso Smith and Eddie Royal just about ran into each other when they both tried to catch the ball.
The punt returns are terrible. We are getting no blocking on special teams.
Simply put, the broncos can be had on special teams.

Why??
Kick coverage is one of our strengths, It’s our return game that is weak. Prater has a strong leg that can sometimes just kick it out of the endzone, and when he doesn’t, our guys have been tackling the returnmen well. I’m not that worried.

I just feel skeptical about this whole unit.
Last year we were burned by sproles and many others on punts.
This year, I know is different (new coach and players), but I still just have a bad feeling about the entire special teams unit. field goals, kick returns, kick coverage, punt returns and punt coverage. We’ve had penalties, fumbles (hillis), and not very good returns. I mean, it’s not like the sky is falling there, because there have only been a few incidences, but it still doesn’t make me feel comfortable like the defense and offense do.

The weakness on special teams is in our return game not in coverage. We have actually done very well in forcing touch backs and in coverage team.
Our weakness is when you punt we have people running into each other, not getting blocks, and fumbling.

Punt and kick coverage being the exception.
They have been much better on coverage this season. It has been the Broncos return game that has suffered. I don’t expect the special teams difference to be in the form of a Sproles TD, but I do think the Chargers will win the battle of starting field position.

I’m still not confident in the Broncos LBs pass coverage skills. I’m a little concerned about what Gates might be able to do to us. Also, we’ve been very weak covering screens and flat routes. Also, not many teams have tried to run wide on us and I think we may be susceptible to it. Even though our defense is fast, I think they’re may be focused on stopping runs up the middle and leaving the sidelines vulnerable.

I think that's fair enough.
We may not know what the SD rushing game will be like because Thomlinson wasn’t healthy before but now he’s 100%. Of course, the O-line issues haven’t changed for the Chargers so that may impact his performance. Still, a great RB can make any O-line look good. I hope, no, I believe McDaniels will be aware of Thomlinson’s health and plan accordingly. It will be interesting to see what he and Nolan come up with. It will be really interesting to see how thes two squads handle it.
But what you said about SD’s running game is kind of like what we’re saying about the 2008 Broncos v. the 2009 Broncos. There really isn’t a comparison. New coaches, new schemes, tons of new personnel, especially on defense and special teams.
I am really looking forward to this match up.

add in screens and broken plays to our weaknesses
the longer a pass play takes to develop, the more exposed our coverage LBs become, and if the offensive uglies can get up the field, our LBs become useless…I would rate them about 78% as effective at their drop responsibilities as the most exemplary 3-4 backers out there, so they can still get it done, just not consistently.
Having said that, Nolan and Mcdaniels do a fantastic job of not putting the LBs into too many coverage responsibilities, through substitution packages with our nickle guys like Alphonso Smith and Jack Williams. We haven’t faced a good group of TEs yet, but we have played against several lone TEs that were solid. Usually dawkins gets coverage responsibilities, along with LB Wesley Woodyard in a common substitution package. Woodyard is fast, a hard hitter, a good tackler, and despite his somewhat slight size, has the strength to battle with TEs if it comes to that.
By keeping the front seven in a mostly aggressive mode, Nolan tries to force quicker decisions, which leaves our secondary iin a position to make most of the stops int he passing game, and they have proven to be up to the task, especially Renaldo hill and Dawkins. You may remember our failed “McCree” experiment, so it is no wonder that Denver fans are as excited by our safety play as they have been since Lynch, and to some extent, since the Atwater/Smith days. Dawkin’s game is unreal, and all i can do is shake my head in awe watching him play. His biggest asset he brings to the table is forcing teams to work hard for every point. Long pass plays always have him behind them for the stop, long screens always see him cleaning up the mess, even if it is twenty yards downfield. and once the field shrinks int he redzone? Gaining yards is like pulling teeth so far. Teams can and do score aginst the Broncos, but nothing comes very easy. I fully expect Rivers to be looking to complete some deep passes, but I seriously doubt that we will see any footraces to the endzone…our DBs will be back and waiting all game if need be, even if Denver gains a lead. If your running game doesn’t force us to cheat up a little, the SD offense could likely run into the same problems that all the other offenses have that the Broncos have faced: takes too many plays to score, and every snap raises the possibility of the front seven forcing a turnover.

The secondary has been solid. Champ is Champ, Andre Goodman has been a huge upgrade on the other side. At safety, the combination of Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill might be the best the Broncos have had in 15 or 20 years. They have had a lot to do with the improved play of the Front 7.
Great point about the Broncos slow starts. They do. I think that is because Josh McDaniels likes to evaluate what the opponent is trying to do before adjusting. I’m not saying he doesn’t want to score or get out to a fast start, but like you said, it seemed Shanny always wanted to go for the kill shot early – with McDaniels it is about winning 4 quarters, not 1 or 2.
In terms of other areas, Special Teams has been a concern. The Broncos are also struggling with their short-yardage running game.

Your O-Line
I am pretty sure that Dawkens, Williams, and the rest of our secondary aren’t going to have a problem with Floyd, Naanee, and Gates. Go back to the Cowboys game. It wasn’t as much about the pass getting defended as it was making contact as the ball got to the reciever. Its pretty hard to catch a ball when you have an Orange bullet hitting you the same time as the ball gets there.
On top of our secondary, your O-Line needs to protect Rivers long enough to get the ball to these guys. We were able to sack Brady while just rushing 4 guys. And the Patriots have a good O-Line. Either the San Diego Offensive line needs to have a career day, or Phillip Rivers is going to get tired running for his life, and isn’t going to have time to find his receivers.

there were also a couple of near sacks where Brady was in the grasp but was able to get the ball off
Also, Brady was under considerably more pressure in the second half after defensive scheme changes and the loss of Matt Light.
Rivers is mobile enough and smart enough to avoid sacks another QB might give up, but he’ll probably be facing quite a bit of pressure from his blind side, and it should increase in the 2nd half.

To say the Broncos collapsed in 2008 is actually a slap in the face to the Chargers. They had as much to do with it, and they earned the division.
As for luck – What I like to say is this – “Luck is Opportunity + Preparation”. If you are talking about the Bengals game, sure it was a fortunate bounce, but what if Brandon Stokley isn’t where he is supposed to be? What if he had quit on the play when it wasn;t thrown to him? What if the Safety(Roy Williams) STAYS where he is supposed to be – with Stokley? Fortunate, yes, but it’s funny that those types of bounces always happen to good teams…

we got every bounce, made every play late (6 final drive scores to win games) and this year, we can’t make a play to save our asses. the NFL is all about 1 or 2 plays every week, that’s why you always hear coaches say “they made one or two more plays than we did.” it’s true, we could sight countless examples for almost every team in the league.
the bronco’s have made the plays when it counted and they have beaten the teams they should have beaten. all this breeds confidence and they should be a confident bunch right now. good luck monday night John.

I thought the purpose of this thread was for John Bena from MHR to answer serious football questions regarding the Denver Broncos.
I came here to see what questions Chargers fans had and John’s responses. Unfortunately I don’t see alot of that, so here’s getting back on the right track.
To John Bena,
What would you contribute to the turn around in run defense from last year to this year?
Kyle Orton was able to play without a glove for the first time against the Patriots and played a solid game. Was the glove that much of a hindrance?
by Kwon on Oct 13, 2009 6:52 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Run defense turnaround: the 3-4 is a terrific formation, and the transformation has paid huge dividends, but when it comes to specifically stopping the run, nothing is more significant for the Broncos than the roster turnover we experienced on defense in the LBs and secondary. Out are the chronic whiffers like Nate Webster and Jamie Winborn (who combined to lead the league in unnecesary celebrations and lost helmets), and in are solid tacklers Andra Davis and Mario Haggan. Out are chronically out of place safeties Marlon McCree and Marquand Manuel, in are excellent Dawkins and Renaldo Hill. Schematically, the 3-4 adds an appreciable layer to those roster upgrades, most notably the versatility of the front seven formation wise, and the use of undersized passrushers like Dumervil who can be much more easily substituted in a 3-4 as opposed to the 4-3, but nothing is as significant as who Denver got rid of, and who they replaced them with. They don’t have to be household names to fit together and stay at home where they are needed, and it has been a great lesson in fan humility. One last relevant aside is that our first round rookie Robert Ayers is a significant contributor to our rush defenses, due to his use as a sort of ‘specialist’: he always gets strange, underrated assignments that appear to be key int he rest of the line executing their assignments. More study is necessary to pin it down, but he is definitely contributing.
Orton’s glove: The Patriots’s game was an instance of Orton throwing much more than he has in the past four games, so that expalins the stats, but from firsthand observation, he looks utterly different throwing without the glove. he refused to credit it for any of his mistakes earlier in the season, but after the Pats game, the relief in his comments about the glove were obvious: he was very glad to finally have it off. He will be more accuarte without I believe, but having it off doesn’t mean that he will have the same kind of statistical showing he did in week 5. there are just too many factors that go into that.

Thanks for the ?? Kwon. Thanks to Styg for the answers. He is my right-hand man over at MHR and can answer just as good, if not better, than me.
I’ll add just a couple tid-bits to his answer.
Like Styg says, the 3-4 has been a huge help for the Broncos. They are much more aggressive as well. Way to often last year it seemed the defense sat back and reacted to the offense. Now the defense is attacking and dictating. Big difference. I will also say that tacking is A LOT better, as is gap responsibility.
The glove was my big indicator. Perhaps some was physical, some mental. The truth is, Orton had a gruesome injry that affected his ability ot throw the ball. Now that he is healed, we all saw how he can deliver the football. The arm is plenty strong and the accuracy is there(73% last week)

I don’t expect too many points to come off of the connection, but I can see Rivers tallying yards, and from there anything could happen. our safeties will be back…way back, but this is a risk taking defense, and very aggressive. Rivers will have opportunities to go long when we blitz,a nd then it comes down to mano y mano defense with either Champ or Goodman. i’d say that is 50/50, leaning in the Charger’s favor ever so slightly. What makes it scary is that even with a lead, Denver won’t be able to be aggressive and put the game away, so if the VJ/Rivers connection is alive and well, the game will still be a game in the 4th quarter.
O and D strength for Denver: I’ll say it is their ability to adjust. After halftime, they have been simply lethal, outscoring opponents 59-7 and outgaining them 1158-501yds.

Styg is right on with the first part of your question so I will attack the second part…
The Broncos win if they follow the same ‘recipe’ they have used the first 5 weeks. Force teams to go the long way to score. Avoid turnovers, take advantage of any mistakes the opponent makes. This week, specifically, the Broncos need to stem the tide early. Monday Night Football, on the road, the stadium is going to be jumping. The Broncos can’t let the Chargers get rolling.
The Chargers will win if they can get the running game going. The key for any team against any defense is to be able to stay balanced. The Chargers also have an advantage on Special Teams.

In the Broncos games I’ve watched it seems there have been numerous occasions where an accurate passer could have had big plays against your defense because guys were running wide open through the secondary. How much of that do you think is a potential weakness being exposed and how much of it do you think is a result of Mike Nolan scheming against guys he knows aren’t very accurate?

Maybe neither?
Teams have had their shots downfield on us. Some they have converted, some they haven’t. Whether this is more or less than most teams face, or most teams complete, I can’t say. What I do know is that converting SOME of them hasn’t been enough for teams to win. One great thing I have enjoyed about the Broncos this year is that even when they face adversity, they keep playing instead of folding, and as a result, long plays aren’t necessarily a death knell.
There have been maybe 1 or 2 plays in every game where it looks like if the opponent had converted they would have hurt us. Bad. But so far that hasn’t happened, through five games, and I’m a firm believer that there are reasons for that. Maybe the QB was inaccurate to begin with, or maybe the scheme called for pressure that caused uncharacteristic inaccuracy. Bottom line is that teams have needed to capitalize on ALL of their opportunities to possibly beat Denver, and so far, that just hasn’t happened.
Presumably, it could though.

In Sunday’s game against the Patriots, McDaniels used his final challenge of the game on a three yard pass play in the second quarter. Was that just a young coach making a rookie mistake or am I missing something?

It could very well have been an error
however the refs told him it would be his last challenge, so if he didn’t want to use his last challenge, its hard to believe that he just forgot or ignored them. For some reason he wanted those three yards. Perhaps they were important for setting up the following play or something, or perhaps there was a misunderstanding. He called his first cahllenge of the half to gain some time for the defense to prepare themselves before going out on the field, so he may have had underlying reasons for the second one as well.
All in all I don’t know that a great case could be made for the value of challenge flags, but then I am someone who disagrees vehemently with the replay system, so I’m probably not the best person to debate the topic with…

While 3 yards may not seem like much, the difference between 3rd and 6 and 3rd and 9 is pretty significant. It also gave the Broncos a chance to regroup. It also pushed the Patriots back further, making a possible field goal even farther.
That said, I am a HUGE believer that it is foolish to coach a game based on what MIGHT happen. Football is a game of right now – whether it is using a challenge or calling a timeout – football games are decided by one or two plays and each play is too important to take chances.

Frankly, they all are a bit scary, including the Giants, SD twice, the Eagles (what if the Redskins hire Shanahan?)
but we take heart in the win against the Patriots. A lot of things that have never happened before, or that happen with exceptional rarity were pulled off in that game. Most strikingly, somehow we lost the turnover battle and were behind by two scores, yet still managed to tie and then win in overtime against a team that even when it struggles is a serious battle.
This team has to feel that if they can do that, they can do anything, and i feel the same way.
Last year, the fans were worried. About everything. This year we are just excited.
(Maybe ALL was an overstatement….oakland and KC don’t really seem that scary. but stranger things have happened.)

I also think theEagles, Giants, Colts, and BAL games could be tough. I feel better about going against the Steelers (we should take apart a weak O-line), and BAL has some cracks.
Frankly, I think Denver’s toughest match-up is against the Saints.

He had 12.5 sacks as a rookie
so he can certainly say that he has “been there.” I will say that he had a broken finger throughout last year that never really healed, so that kept him off the radar by preventing him form using his signature technique: the bull rush.
DOOM is unique in his metrics: he is 5-11, but has a wingspan of 6-3 to 6-5 (reports vary…but they agree it is unusally long). Length and leverage. the result is a guy that connects first with the blocker, is lower than the blocker,a nd has surprising agility to push under and around the blocker. As a speed rusher-only last year he was utterly ineffective. he relies on setting up the bull rush, and almost all of his sacks have come on some variation of a power rush.
Additionally, the scheme results in more single battles for him on the outside, and he freely switches ends in the 3-4. He also has a lot more help on the line than he has ever had, and, of course, Wayne Nunnely is coaching him up. I’m sure Nunnely has increased DOOM’s awareness of the game and of himself, but it isn’t the kind of thing that shows up in the highlight reels. Maybe Nunnely will open up about DOOM the way he ahs with Ayers to give us some more insight.

Brandon Marshall is arguably one of the worst human beings in the NFL. Does that ever enter your mind while watching him play or are you able to separate his personal life from his performance on the field?

What?
Sorry, I know you guys are waiting for John and I’m sure he’ll have something to say about this question but this one really shocked me and I feel compelled to respond.
Brandon Marshall is not even close to being one of the worst human beings in the NFL. Immature? Yes, I can understand the rest of the league and their fans saying that. Embarrassing? I’m sure even he is embarrassed by the way he acted toward the end of the preseason. But one of the worst human beings in the NFL? No. No way. Uh uh.
Now, as to whether or not we can seperate his personal life from his professional life when we watch him play, that’s a good question. I can’t answer for any of the other fans but I can give you my answer. My wife and I have eleven kids, yes you read right, eleven. I think one of the things almost every parent learns is that none of them are angels. But I think having eleven teaches you something else. Each child has his or her own distinct personality. Some of them are “easy” to raise and some of them are “difficult”, but every one of them is a human being. That means that even the easiest have some ugly issues and even the most difficult have a lot of redeming qualities. But we love them all, warts and all.
And though you might not expect it, I wouldn’t put Marshall anywhere near the most difficult category. He’s done some really bone head things and he’s embarrassed himself and us and I’ve been very angry at him. But on the other hand, he’s also got a big, big heart. You should see some of the stuff he does for kids in Denver. As a matter of fact, those kids may have been the deciding factor in what I am hoping is his turn around. He has said he really took a close look at himself when he realized what kind of behavior he was modeling for those kids. He’s said he wants to change that and I believe him.
Now maybe I’m a sentimental old fool, but there are worse sins. And maybe, no probably, he’ll end up doing some more bone headed things in his life. But I really do believe he’s turned a corner. So, when I see him out on the field and making a good play, or even a bad play, I feel proud. I’m not just talking about how he plays when I say he’s really come a long way and I think the sky’s the limit.
If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

Thanks Jack, good response.
Yes Marshall has done some stupid things, and I was not happy with the way he handled himself in the offseason, or his off-field behavior, ‘worst’ is pretty harsh though. Right now it seems that he has gotten his act together and is truly working on becoming a better man. It will still take an offseason with no issues to enirely convince me that the corner is turned, but I think he’s on the right track and has seen the error of his ways. Hopefully his engagement works out well and he can put his off field problems behind him.
To be honest, when I see a 51 yrd catch for a game winning TD past 5 defenders, or a few walk in ‘oh were you trying to defend me?’ TD catches, I’m not thinking about his off-field stuff. That’s what tues-sat is for.

Sorry, I completely disagree with that. Marshall has made some mistakes, and he has paid for them, but there are plenty of human beings that are worse playing the NFL right now.
Marshall is young and largely immature. He is, at long last, starting to get it, however. What he needed more than anything was tough love. Josh McDaniels is gave that to him and he is responding.

Richard was referring to Brandon Marshall’s repeated offenses of beating women. However, Brandon’s off-the-field list is a long one:
-arrested for assaulting police officer in college
-was part of the altercation that eventually got Darrent Williams killed
-arrested for domestic violence against girlfriend
-arrested for DUI
-ticketed for driving without license and proof of insurance
-Douglas County deputies state that they’ve fielded 11 calls from Marshall’s home since January 2006.
-arrested in Atlanta for misdemeanor battery
-arrested in Atlanta (6 months later) for violence against girlfriend
-lied about how he injured his hand in the offseason
I’m 24. Brandon Marshall is a year older than me. I can’t imagine getting arrested 5 times in my lifetime, much less in the last few years. Also, it sounds like there’s a lot more going on that’s not being reported. As much as I really respect Marshall’s talent and he seems to be a likeable guy on the field (for what that’s worth), his track record shows that he’s not a very good human being and has no problem with hitting women.

I currently work in law enforcement.
My background inlcudes teaching (6th grade, which is the period I was a DC for a HS team and my longest career). I’m on record at MHR saying that I wouldn’t miss Marshall if he is tossed.
If he has paid his dues, is remorseful, and performs, there is a place for him with this team. But he has had more than enough “2nd chances”, and if he screws up again, I won’t miss him.
As a player, Marshall is terrific. But character means more to me than how well a guy plays football. If he keeps his nose clean, I’ll appreciate his contributions to our club and cheer him on. But given his past, there is no room for continued bad behavior. One thing I like about McDaniels is that he doesn’t seem to tolerate bad behavior either. Shanahan wouldn’t have suspended Marshall. Another off field incident, and I’ll wager that Marshall is gone.
As it stands, there is talk of a contract extension and a pay raise. It is reasonable to assume that a strict conduct clause will be inlcuded.

But his statement is ridiculous. I’ve been as hard on Brandon as anyone – check the archives – but Leonard Little killed a woman and is playing the NFL. There are worse.
And, for what it is worth, he was found innocent – If Mike Vick can get a 2nd chance after spending 2 years in federal prison, I think Marshall gets the ‘benefit of the doubt’ when he has served 0 days in prison.

I actually think that's an interesting question that applies to many players in the league.
I agree with Trinidad Jack’s response that Brandon seems to be a man of extremes. Certainly the number of run-ins with the law and domestic abuse allegations are unacceptable in my opinion; however, he also does seem to have a genuinely big heart in other matters (even when trying to look beyond the PR spin from Marshall and the Bronco’s camp).
I would be lying if I said it didn’t bother me at all. I am a HUGE fan of Brandon Marshall the football player. The only reason that I don’t own a #15 jersey is because of all the other stuff.

And some is just the rapid-fire nature of the offense. Don’t sweat TOP too much outside of context: it matters, but there are lots of factors that go into it, and some things that reduce TOP are desirable (like a good deep ball).

Andra Davis
Just looked like crap to me pre-season; I’m assuming he must be playing better now. That looked like the weak link to me, what’s the take on him at MHR?
I thought Dummerville might be great rushing as an OLB, but wondered about him dropping into coverage. Does he ever do that?
How is Ayers? That was who I had pegged for the Chargers before the draft.
Do you have any sense that this defense is so different (and better) that teams aren’t sure where to attack it yet? Are you expecting any regression as the season goes on and there is more tape on it?
Oh yeah, last year you thought AJ only picked up Bennett only to keep him off the Broncos and that there was no way he would be on the Bolts this year, any comment there. :-)

Answer
Andra is a big surprise…I thought he looked pretty mediocre in the preseason, but he has really stepped it up in the regular season. Check his stats…he’s getting tackles, forcing fumbles…he is a very good ILB.
Dumerville does drop into coverage from time to time and everyone has been surprised with how well he is adjusting to it. He doesn’t always look like an all-pro coverage LB, but he is absolutely NOT a liability in coverage so far.
Ayers is a rookie. He hasn’t played into a starting role yet for sure, but they use him situationally and he makes his plays when he is in the game. I really think it is a case of taking time to develop a rookie into the system…he is going to be a starter for us and until then, he is an exceptional rotational LB / DE.
Yes I do…and the cool thing is that the defense will keep people on their toes for the most part because you can really see that they game-plan according to the opponent. Example: Weeks 1 – 4 blitzes were mixed in much more than week 5 vs NE. I do expect some more points to be scored against us as the season goes on, but they will be hard-earned points, not the gimmies we were handing out last year.
No comment on Bennett…but I wouldn’t give AJ that much credit. ;P

I anticipate a statistical regression from the defense simply from playing better offensive teams. I think the unit will actually continue to improve as a whole. One thing that has struck me is how much better the defense is in the second half than the first. That indicates to me that Nolan is doing an excellent job at making the appropriate halftime adjustments. I still have a hard time believing it myself…but I think this defense is legit.

I know that you guys added a bejeezus amount of halfbacks
In the offseason, Well, maybe not a bejeezus; But other than Knowshon, who (halfback) has seen the field for any significant reps?
For example, has Buckhalter really played much?
A much needed bye week; and two whole weeks to focus the inner hatred of UW even moreso than normal.

Good Grief
That’s like the Chargers total running attack in half the carries.

Yes it is
Buckhalter until he was injured was by far our most dangerous running back. Knowshon is going to be special, but Buckhalter is really good right now.

Until Hurt
Buckhalter was leading the team in big plays. He was probably our biggest threat and that is saying something.

How bad is he?
The phrase amongst my Eagles fans was always “Buckhalter is great until he inevitably blows out his knee.” Is that what happened?

It is an Ankle Injury
Given that we have a bye after the Chargers I wouldn’t be surprised if he sits out another week. I would expect him back by then.

Nothing new to contribute here,
but for added emphasis I’ll repeat that Buckhalter has been pretty awesome.
He’s easily been our most explosive back so far. I do think that he might play against SD…he was questionable up until a day or two before the NE game. While we may have picked up a “bejeezus amount of halfbacks” in the offseason, most of them have since been sent packing at our depth at the position is actually pretty thin.

Yeah, and....
Buckhalter is no kid. While I’m not surprised by what he’s been doing, he’s going to need to be replaced in 2010 or 2011.

Assume for a minute that the Chargers crush the Broncos
Where does that leave us in determining how “real” the Broncos are?
Or if the Chargers simply win a close game. Does that make it any different than if the Chargers crush them?

Good question
Some people may take that as smack-talkish, but I think it is valid given our past and the “new regime” at Denver.
If the Chargers crush the Broncos, we will be taking a long hard look at why. Part of me would be worried a little. So far this team looks like a team that is always going to be in the game. Blow-outs shouldn’t happen for 2 reasons: Ball-control offense and a solid aggressive defense.
If the Chargers win close, it doesn’t make a difference of my opinion of our team…we’d still be 5 – 1 and looking strong.

Two questions for Chargers fans (I’d ask them at the MHR thread but it has disappeared):
1. With all the trade rumors swirling around TO right now, what would you guys think of having Terrell Owens opposite Vincent Jackson with Chambers in the slot?
2. If Norv doesn’t make the playoffs (or win in the playoffs), what would you think of Mike Shanahan as your new HC?
Sorry if you guys have already covered either topic…I haven’t read through all of the posts.

Can't speak for the rest of us, but I'm against both
I think TO is a very good player and respect his ability, but I just don’t want to bring him into a crowded recieving corps and hope he DOESN’T complain about the number of balls thrown his way. We’ve got Jackson (#1), Chambers (on the way out, believe it), Naanee (can’t get on the field but talented), Malcom Floyd (6’5" and victimizes opposing CBs) and Kassim Osgood (also 6’5" but only sees about 15 offensive plays per season). Plus you have Gates and Sproles soaking up additional touches.
Almost the same deal with Shanahan. Good coach, but he had the benefit of excellent coordinators and John Elway for much of his career— and his ego would clash with AJ Smith’s, big-time.

TO looks done, and is a locker room cancer to boot. Chambers is gone after this season as his contract expires, and seems to have lost a step. I think the Bolts are stacked with Naanee, Floyd and VJ as long as they can keep them all. I’m still ok with Norv, but if we had to switch I’d rather go Cowher or somebody with a reputation for defense.

In response to your questions:
1. No way AJ allows someone with the reputation of being verbose into the locker room. He’s always been about having guys with character, and people who will not question the front office. Also, as DaBolts said, we’re pretty stacked at Receiver as it is.
2. I’m torn between the option of having Shanny as HC. Granted, he’s a great coach and something tells me he’d love to play the Broncos twice a year, but I doubt he’d go to a division rival.
by Schwing on Oct 15, 2009 10:24 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
On the contrary
I think he’d love to go to a division rival to stick it to the Broncos. He went with Denver specifically to stick it to Al Davis.

Yeah, but there was a reason for that
Shannahan got the shaft from Al. Davis still owes him salary from his last year working with the faders. It ended on a very bad note.
I don’t expect Shanahan to feel all sunshiny about the firing from the Broncos, it was done with class and respectfully. Shanny is getting paid 7Million a year for nothing right now…he can’t feel too terrible about that. I honestly think this firing will be good for his career as he will see the error of his ways…you’ll know he doesn’t if he hires Slowik as his DC for his next job. That guy is a joke.

every coach would like to beat their old team, but like Sadaraine says below, the firing was done with class. Also, he (I believe) is still great friends with the owner.

No way!
TO? On his way down. VJ? On his way up. Floyd, Naanee, Davis (yeah, him)… this team will be set at WR for years to come.
Shanny? You’re kidding, right? I’d rather stick with Norv. Really, If Norv is replaced he should be replaced with a disciplinarian who will rebuild the OL a la Marty, leaving our gnarly skill players in place to do their thing.
