Applewhite & Mruczkowski return to practice. Cesaire, Cooper, Johnson, Merriman & Phillips still sidelined -- ka
Five of the starting "front seven" on defense are still not healthy. Is there any way we could spin this into a good thing?
Comments
No, it's not a f&*#ing good thing
Why is it taking so long for Johnson to get healthy? If he’s never going to get better they should just cut him.
I’m tired of even thinking about Cesaire as part of our defense. This guy is toast and yet we have no one better. That is so sad.
Can someone please help our Merriman? Can we offer a reward to get him fixed?
I’m going to live in la-la land with Cooper and Phillips and pretend that they are really okay and this is just a mistake.

I think it's funny that, apparently, Johnson is what we've pinned our hopes on for the defensive line.
Acee has reported repeatedly that AJ’s answer to addressing the D-Line was the acquisition of Johnson. Still not feeling depressed enough? He’s also reported that whatever “help” AJ is reportedly pursuing is not on the defensive line, and that what we have is what we get.

It's called desperation.
It’s funny how the Bingham injury caused so much of it. He goes down and Cesaire and Williams’ health become really important. They go down and it’s desperation time.

I realize that.
I mean, I didn’t expect much of anything out of Johnson, given his history and what we paid for him.
I just think it’s amusing that when we ask what’s going to be done about the D-line, the Chargers (through Acee) point to Johnson and say “he’s it”.
I guess we can read into that and say that AJ et al have realized that nothing short of significant overhaul is going to fix the defense, so they aren’t going to overpay in a trade for a guy like Shaun Rogers and compromise the future.
Implicit in that assumption is that this is no longer a “push” year, and that our chances to win a championship this year are dependent on the (not real good) chances of our current roster carrying us through.

I have to think
Rogers simply isn’t available. And I’d have to agree that there’s no silver bullet trade that’ll make this team a championship contender.
That being said, given all the team’s problems even if they lose both games to the Broncos and go to New Jersey and lose (our three toughest games remaining, right?), this ragtag team has still has a chance in the other 9. 11-5 could get you somewhere (although they’ve already sacrificed tie-breakers to Pit and Bal, sigh).
I guess what I’m saying is that if A.J. is assessing that, I’d agree. I wouldn’t be happy about it if I were him, but I’d give us a puncher’s chance. So, basically, you’re in that middle ground where you’re trying to better your chances in those games while at the same time leaving yourself the ammo to fix the D next season.

I know the solution to our woes.
It’s being reported that the Raiders are in full panic-mode, and are putting every player that isn’t young with upside on the trading block.
Let’s call Al Davis and offer him a 4th round pick plus Buster Davis for Richard Seymour. Just show him Buster’s 40 time and he’ll fall over himself to make the deal!

I wonder how much we pay for the 2 wins a year.
On the one hand, a pair of gimmes isn’t a bad thing, but on the other hand, the worst horse-trader in the world won’t trade with us, you know?

Don't forget the Eagles
I have a feeling they’re going to end the season with the best record in the league. They’re really good now and unstoppable if their defense gets a little healthier.

Eagles are a very good team, but not the BEST record kind of great

They're quite good
I think they’re better than the Broncos and just about on par with NYG, except much more dangerous.

Well,
I remain adamant that the Eagles will not have the best record come season’s end. I do concede that they are a very good team that will go deep in the playoffs

It's a home game
Not sure if that matters, but it makes it easier for the Chargers in my brain. And sometimes the Eagles kind of take weeks off, I guess I’m hoping for that.

Agreed
The Chargers have to hope the Eagles take a week off, because if they’re on they’re game they’re really good. Homefield for the Bolts certainly helps

I don’t think enough of a big deal was made of Cesaire missing all of training camp. They acted like Week 1 would come around and he’d be fine to jump right in. It was foolish at best.

Maybe the Donkies will catch the injury bug from us?

Maybe we can send them OchoCinco and Terrell Owens too…Then there would be a ridiculously selfish reciever look-at-me histeria extravaganza in Denver. Even more than there already is. Imagine the post-game interviews, they would all say “I dont get the dam ball enough! Thats why we lose! I am gods gift to football” times 3!!!

I don't care about look at me selfish receivers
That’s media-created-whatever that you can take or leave, it doesn’t bother me either way. Brandon Marshall is something different all together. He’s a giant human with an anger problem and he takes it out on women. The only reason he is allowed to walk among the rest of us is because his girlfriends kept refusing/were-too-scared to press charges.

Looks like Merriman and Johnson should be practicing soon.
“Chargers not practicing today: OLB Shawne Merriman (groin), OLB Shaun Phillips (calf), ILB Stephen Cooper (knee) and DT Travis Johnson (groin). Merriman and Johnson did rehab work on a side field.”

I don’t know how much that means. Cesaire did work on the side field every day of training camp.

trade bait?
There’s a severe lack of depth on the defensive line. Trading away the guys that are there wouldn’t be very smart.

Three small adjustments
Are all we need on defense.
Have Cason and Cromartie on the field at the same time all the time to increase team speed.
Play 4 down lineman to help shore the up the middle run “D”. This means 1 or 2 of the “two seans” plays with their hand on thé ground. Rotation will keep them fresh.
Play 3 linebackers sending Barnett and Cooper further outside and putting runstoppers Dobbins or Siler in thé middle, thé outside linebackers will be in better position to cover those tightends and provide desperately needed outside run support. Not to mention additional blitz angles and options.

The defense has generally been less effective with four down linemen this year.

Richard...
it was ineffective in 08’ with 3 down linemen. i think the problem is simply much more deeper than switchng allignments. and that should be (obvious) by now. 4-3 or 3-4 try either one, but it won’t matter. from what i’ve seen on tape they seem to be trying to get the players to play within a boxed scheme. and they’ve never done that until Wade left. he alwyas seem to adjust his schemes to the players abilities, and it worked. as well in dallas.

They’re ineffective in most sets right now. I’m just pointing out that they’ve been at their worst playing with four down linemen.

got that the first time you said it.
i was pointing out ineffective in either, is still horrbile. less or more it dosen’t matter. below good is still below good. and without jamal, they are using more 4 man down alignments. which just magnifies the bigger problem.

If we lose on monday...
I’ll be pissed but no way am I giving up on the Chargers. Wild Card still a possibility and this San Diego team is battle tested play-off wise which is exactly what the current Broncos aren’t. This Chargers team has shown the last 2 years they have no quit and I’ll be damned if anybody turns their back on them this early in the season.
