Dungy and Manning
As excited as I am about the Chargers winning tonight, I have to tip my cap to the Colts franchise. They played an absolutely remarkable game, and this will go down as one of the better football games I have ever seen.
That being said, I have to say a couple of things. First of all, I have to say that Peyton Manning is one of the best at his position. The guy led his team, and came up just short. Any game we play against Peyton (or anyone else for that matter) where we don't have more than a 2-possession lead I am seriously worried. I am really glad he never got to touch the ball during the overtime period.
Second, I really hope this is not Tony Dungy's last game. This may be his last game at the head of the Colts, but I hope he remains active as a coach. Dungy will go down as one of the greatest coaches of all time, being the only coach to lead his team to a playoff berth 10 years in a row. But more importantly, Dungy is one of classiest guys in the game. Whether Dungy returns next season or not, I wish him nothing but the best of luck and good wishes...
All that being said, GO CHARGERS!!!

All true
Colts are definitely a rival, but it’s not bitter like with others (cough, Broncos, cough) and it’s because of their coach and QB.

Disappointed
a bit that we won’t play them next year during the regualr schedule. But there’s probably a good chance we’ll see them in the playoffs again. I’ve loved the last few years and I like watching the Colts. If we’d had lost I would have pulled for the Colts to go all the way.

As a Jaguars fan
I’d be thrilled if Dungy retired. I’m sick and tired of having our heads caved in at least once (maybe twice) a year. I hope he finds himself turning around a franchise like Detroit, who needs a strong leader and fantastic defensive mind. That said, I’d be sick if Shanahan showed up. A terrific offensive mind with all those weapons … ugh. Barf.

funny, I had the opposite reaction
If the Chargers hadn’t made so many mistakes (how many blown picks did they have? 5? 6? somebody tell the DBs this isn’t volleyball), the game would’ve been a blowout. The Colts couldn’t beat an 8-8 team with a gimpy TE and without a starting RB. The better team definitely won, the Colts didn’t deserve to advance, and my respect for Manning and Dungy dropped a few notches. 9-10 in the playoffs… that’s Schottenheimer / Wade Phillips territory.
No disrespect to the Chargers — they’re peaking at the right time, and they’re by far playing their best ball of the year. I hope they win it all this year, and they just might if they can cut down on the mistakes. I’m just off the Colts bus.

You should stay on the Bronco's bus.
Kinda depressing, isnt’ it?
And, bighead, thanks for the post. Good luck to the Chargers here on out. This loss hurt – just like last year’s – but the better team definitely won. My Colts didn’t show up to play as a team and Peyton can only save their butts so many times.

What?
9-10 in the playoffs is right up there with some of the best coaches in football EVER! Also, do Schottemheimer and Wade Phillips have rings?
Honestly, has the collective IQ of football fans dropped in the last few months?

Me too
We exorcised the Bronco demos. They’ve had enough bashing…
for this year.

Coastal Bronco
Is anything but stupid, and to be fair there are some folks on Stampede Blue that have questioned Dungy. That said; I think Dungy is an amazing coach.

Okay, so the Schotty and Phillips comparison was a bit harsh
But I’m still not as impressed with the Colts as I once was. How many times have they won their division since Indy became Peyton’s Place? How many times have they been to the playoffs? What’s their regular season record over that time? And only one Super Bowl appearance to show for it? No doubt Dungy’s regular season record indicates he’s a good, and maybe great, coach (as Schotty’s does), but one of the best ever? Highly debatable, at best. The NFL “best is defined in Dec-Jan, Sept-Nov is for the "good.” BTW, notice that Dungy and Schotty are the only two coaches on your list with a losing playoff record (which includes a lot of other not “best ever” coaches, IMO).
But we digress. My main point was that the reason the game was so close was due to SD’s lapses, rather than Indy’s competitiveness (which is where I differ with OP). Indy was once again a playoff paper tiger. The Bolts, by contrast, put on yet another showcase of grit and determination, which is becoming a trademark of theirs this time of year. SD just refused to lose, even when they made mistakes — watch out Steelers.

I wasn't really expecting
to start such a heated debate about where Dungy ranks among the games coaching greats, my main point was that based on everything I’ve ever read about the guy he is regarded as one of the classiest and best people in the game, and whether he is one of the greatest coaches or not, I think the game could use more people of his kind of character.

No arguments with Dungy's character
I didn’t intend to sink into debating his “best ever” status either. I just don’t think the Colts really showed up this past Sunday, which seems to be their habit in the playoffs more often than not (10 years in a row in the playoffs and one Super Bowl appearance).
