Upgradeable Positions

I remember going into the 2007 draft, I took a look at the roster and thought that we really had no positions that needed to be upgraded.  Basically, all we could do was draft the best player and use them for depth.  We wound up with these picks:

Buster Davis (3rd receiver)

Eric Weddle (backup safety/cornerback/project)

Anthony Waters (backup ILB/project)

Scott Chandler (3rd tight end)

Legedu Naanee (WR/TE/H-back/project)

Brandon Siler (back ILB)

Now obviously adding a speedy receiver and some ILB depth (with Edwards and Godfrey leaving) was the main goal.  Weddle was a project of sorts.  A "smart" player who just needed to find the right spot.  Chandler fills a roster spot, Naanee is a pick we could make because of our lack of any needs.

The 2008 draft came up and all anybody thought about was replacing Turner and Neal.  I hate to critize AJ Smith because it seems like every move he makes is the right one, but I think he put too much faith in Derek Smith, Wilhelm and Jamal Williams knees.  I also think he worried too much about the loss of Drayton Florence.

Because of this we wound up spending two of our five picks on replacements for Turner (Hester, Marcus Thomas), two more on replacements for Florence (Cason and DeJuan Tribble) and the last one on a good young tackle (Corey Clark).

After spending high draft picks on Castillo and Olshansky, what made AJ think he could find a backup DT off the scrap heap?  He knows Jamal is old and has bad knees, but made no effort to upgrade the depth of the position past Bingham, who while he has flashness of being a good player is not an every-down lineman.

Now last year Wilhelm and Cooper played pretty good, but I think Cooper was helping out Wilhelm a lot more than any of us realized.  With that being said, it you know your defense is all about blitzing and speed and setting up for the MLB to make the tackle, you cannot rely on two slow players that have more intelligence than physical skill to start on the inside for you.  This is why Dobbins is having so much more success than Wilhelm.  The tackles get angled towards him and he fiercely makes plays with his speed and strength.  Is it okay to have one smart, slow ILB and one with lots of speed and strength?  Absolutely.  This is the formula we used last year and also during the Edwards/Godfrey years.

My main point here is that the two most important positions in the 3-4 defense (nose tackle and linebackers) was neglected this year  Also, Waters and Siler seem to have been blown picks as I've seen nothing impressive from either of them.  With Cooper's suspension and Jamal Williams having one good game in four weeks so far this year, we've seen the results.  Marcus Thomas was cut and picked up by the Lions and DeJuan Tribble has just been waived and will hopefully be signed to the practice squad.  Hester has seen no time anywhere except special teams.  As far as I can tell, Cason and Clark are studs.

So....my question is....did AJ blow these last two drafts?  Buster Davis is looking like he could be an okay slot receiver and Weddle looked great last year but has shown me nothing this year.  Naanee looks like an asset but cannot seem to get on the field because of Chambers, Jackson and Gates being so good.  So outside of what Cason has shown through preseason and the first 4 games of this year....what significant impact has AJ made through the draft in the past two years?

Now I'm terrified as the season goes on that Jamal will break down.  Or that Cooper will get hurt and we'll get a lot of Wilhelm/Smith at MLB.  Or that Weddle is just too small to play FS.  Where is our talent and depth at these position?  I think this team, talent-wise, is the weakest we've had in 2-3 years.

Great Post

Having said that, I’m going to disagree just a bit on some aspects. The rule of thumb on grading drafts is three years; sometimes these guys take a while to catch on to NFL speed. Even Gholston on the Jets who was a top ten pick and is still sitting on the bench. I also think that our number two pick from this year really brought us Chambers; and he was huge absolutely transforming our offense. V. Jackson and Buster just weren’t up to being the number one WR and our offense really struggled with just Gates and LT.

Waters is still a question mark, but they thought they could pull off another Cromartie where they took an injured player they thought had huge upside. I can’t argue too much with that even if it doesn’t pan out. Does it leave us looking thin at ILB now, yes, but I think they have a better idea how to play without Cooper now. Siler was always a long shot on a seventh round pick, the fact that he is a special teams demon is gravy, many seventh rounders sink without a trace. Right now I think the last two drafts have provided this:

C. Chambers: Gold
Cason: Gold
B. Davis: Potential
Naanee: High Potential
Corey Clark: Potential
Weddle: Jury is out, clearly has areas that need improvement.
Chandler: capable backup
Hester: Unknown
Siler: Special teams ace

To some degree we got spoiled by the 04/05 drafts because we had so many picks, and picks that were way up in the rounds. I agree with you is on the picks of Marcus Thomas and DeJuan Tribble (5th & 6th rounders); I never really saw how they could make the team or provide depth we didn’t already have. That leaves me with your main point of why we didn’t address a nose tackle; and what I wonder is; was there a talented NT in the draft we could have picked up and passed on? Jamal Williamses don’t grow on trees (thank god or we’d all be crushed when they fell). I haven’t analyzed that, but I recall reading the pickings were pretty slim at NT. In a quick look Alan Branch was the only huge defensive tackle I could find that might have been in our reach.

I’m mostly OK with the last two drafts, it has been argued that AJ overpaid for both Weddle and Hester; and that may turn out to be. But I also think there was so much talent on the roster, there really isn’t room for all the picks we had, it’s ok to overpay a bit in those circumstances. All that said I’m really looking forward to next year when I think we have eight draft picks to play with. The only high value pick AJ has made that has been a flat out bust was Sammy Davis in my opinion; I’m willing to give these recent draftees more time before making that call.

Ultimately I think you make good points, you can certainly question these drafts; I’m hanging fire on them. Full disclosure, this is at least partly the result of my having dismissed Cromartie as a reach that didn’t pan out at the start of last year. :-)

Here I go defending Weddle again

I actually think Weddle has been an upgrade over McCree. I’ve been impressed with his blitz ability (although they haven’t used him much that way this year) and his ability to “clean up” bad plays. His supposed coverage inadequacies are only highlighted because those are the plays we see. We don’t see what he does when the balls don’t go his way. In addition, the majority of plays I’ve seen go for big gains against him had more to do with scheme problems than his own physical limitations. I will admit, I have seen him miss more tackles than I like, but even those are usually ones where he is juked by a more athletic player than complete breakdowns in tackling fundamentals.

I agree with you....

Weddle’s best skill appears to be blitzing (which is odd for an undersized safety), a role he handled almost exclusively last year when he wasn’t shadowing Wes Welker. I had really high hopes for him this year because of the smarts he played with, but I think there has been a dropoff. Weddle has been mostly in position to make plays, but no plays have been made.

He is also an incredible mismatch against any TE, which has forced us to scramble right before the play on several occasions so far this year. I need to see more reliable over-the-top help from him before I trust him as a full time free safety.

Excellent reply

I agree with everything you said and with your grades on our draft picks, but my argument is that in the past two years AJ has become so obsessed with projects that he has forgotten about filling the essential need positions. A year or two ago every position had a backup plan and now it seems we have none for DT, our backup plan for ILB isn’t great and we don’t really have backup safeties.

I’d rather have a big young DT waiting in the wings then have Naanee, even with all of his potential.

I'm with you now

I think it is fair to say that AJs projects for those positions have failed (Oliver for CB/Safety, Waters at ILB, and McKinney at NT) or at least look to be failing. I would rather have the NT than Naanee too; it still kills me that they gave up Divens who looked to me like the widebody NT heir apparent we need but kept McKinney who hasn’t even gotten of the inactive list.

This past draft

We got screwed by our position and order. It was always known that we had certain needs, but the players we wanted were either snatched too early or weren’t worthy of such high picks, so AJ just went with the best possible guy available on the board.

And just to echo DB, give it another couple years before we start saying the word “bust.”

Patriots have been getting "screwed" like this for years

I’d love to see AJ gamble by trading down and picking up an additional pick for the next year. Obviously, this team doesn’t need anymore 5th and 6th rounders since they have trouble making the team, but the Patriots got a top 10 pick this year because they are willing to trade back if they found that “players we wanted were either snatched too early or weren’t worthy of such high picks”.

Jamal has gotten better as the season has progressed.

Cason has been brilliant.

Hester will be good.

I haven't seen enough of Cason to say he's brilliant

But from what I saw in the preseason I was very unimpressed with his sloppy coverage.

Forced Fumble in Week 1 that set up the go ahead scored.

Pick of Cutler in the End Zone in Week 2 that lead to what should have been the game winning score.

He has made plays, no doubt about that. Has anyone paid enough attention to know how consistent he has been?

Oh I didn't realize he only played two plays

That’s fantastic!

I've loved Cason

My favorite thing about him is that AJ drafted him to help cover Wes Welker. Just hearing that we’re game planning for the Pats with the draft makes me happy.
