GameThread for San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos
San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos, Sep 14, 2008 1:15 PM PDT
All right now, this is what we have been waiting for. At the end of this one the Chargers are either even at 1-1 or two games out two games into the season. Expect both teams to be hungry and pull out all the stops.

In a wide open AFC...
If SD doesn’t make it, it won’t be because of the result of the second game of the season. If anything I can see this making the Chargers even hungrier. There’s still a lot of football left to be played.
This game is so sad
To see 53 guys work hard and do everything they can to win only to have the win ripped away by the officiating. I have never seen such horrible mistakes by a crew, I almost wish we could find out that they were on the take so that there was a reasonable excuse for that mess.

We should have lost, I will admit that. If you have a problem with the officiating, write a letter to the league.

“If you have a problem with the officiating, write a letter to the league.”
Come on dude…don’t be an asshole
Pop-Gun Padres '08
I'm not being an asshole.
I’m telling you that while I will accept this as a Denver victory, I can understand why Chargers fans would be pissed off. The last call was pretty bad. And how is a technical malfunction blatant cheating? What if the Broncos had challenged some other play and faced the same problem? Then we’d be complaining about bad officiating.
What I was trying to say with that last sentence was that we, as Broncos fans on some sports blog on the Internets, have no control over the officiating. We can’t change the fact that Hochuli made a bad call. So please, stop taking it out on us.
I will not rub it in anyone’s face that we won, so you should not complain to me about a bad call. I’m not defending the refs or anybody else, I’m just saying that what happened is in the past now and we all need to move on. I’ve said many times that a team is best measured by how it handles adversity. Maybe that applies to fans, too.
2-0.

The machine would've been broken whether the Broncos were up by 14 or down by 40.
Stop trying to make that some kind of controversy. It’s not. You can’t even prove that they would have overturned the call. (If you want my opinion, I think it would have been overturned, but I’m not a professional, am I?)

I'm going to have to say.
1. The Broncos deserved to win the game bad calls or not. They had their way with our defense.
2. Probably the Worst Officiated Game I have ever seen. We literally got a splintery wooden broom handle shoved right up our asses by the officials. I must say is was awfully convenient that the replay machines didn’t work when we needed them and worked perfectly when the Broncos needed them. Quite the coincidence for the home team.

They are down 15 points
if it weren’t for two “technicalities.” (The broncos fixing their replay system and Ed Hockuly single handedly handing the game to the home team). Rivers had a better game than Cutler in my opinion, considering we had no run game.
But our defense got bitch slapped, owned, manhandled, blah blah blah. We lost on two technicalities but we didn’t win because the D didn’t step up.

Bad calls? Yes. Broncos reply system? No.
The NFL owns and operates the system. The Broncos have nothing to do with it.
If the Broncos had been the victims of those calls would I be complaining? Would I feel cheated? You bet. As a matter of fact, they have been on the losing end of bad calls, many times. They will be on the wrong end of bad calls in the future too. And so will the Chargers.
Are the referees incompetent? Maybe. More likely though is that they just made mistakes. Is this some kind of conspiracy? You don’t really believe that do you?

And instead of hiring a neutral party
they hire a local person who controls the replay feed, who I really hope is just incompetent.
There is no excuse for the technical failure. It is there to eliminate the human error, not be another vehicle for it.
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you?
I agree to an extent.
The system should be up, running and tested long before the game begins. If problems are found, they should be corrected. I assume that was done. If not, changes need to be made. But sometimes things go wrong anyway. We have to accept that and do the best we can to deal with the situation at hand and minimize the possibility of future occurrences.
I’ll take you at your word that they hire somebody locally to run the machine. I was under the impression the official running the machine was a part of the officiating crew and brought in like everybody else. But I don’t know enough to argue the point.
I am sure I must be wrong, but I sense an implication in your reply that the operator was from Denver and therefore may have created the failure to create a favorable outcome for the Broncos. That would mean the operator planned in advance to make this move or was an incredibly fast thinker would dreamed up the sceme on the spot with only a few seconds to think it through. I am certain both scenerios stretch credulity too far.
Further, by that same reasoning, since Hochuli is from the San Diego area he may have been biased for the Chargers. I’m sure you agree, of course, these kinds of claims should not even be hinted at unless the person making the charge has some hard evidence to back them up..
If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

I'd agree
It’s not like this is some fly by night organization, a multi-billion dollar organization ought to be able to handle getting a video feed down on the field. That said, sheer incompetence seems most likely to me.
Next week I think I’m going to start awarding the ’Hochuli" to the poster with the absolute worst prediction.

That's kinda funny....
there is a fantasy league that awards a “norvie” for the most points left on the bench (with bad starters, of course). Of course, the award predates Norv’s tenure with the Chargers.

I heard
on the radio about Merkel, a NY Giants rookie back in the day who made a bone headed play not running to second, his name became synonymous with doing something blatantly stupid…

Actually it's referred to as the Merkel Boner
Merkel was on first when the winning run was knocked in, but never went to 2B. Merkel was not accustomed to being on the field and sprinted back to the dugout to avoid the crowd (fans left the stadium using the field in those days). A player on the other team (Johnny Evers) supposedly found the ball (a fan may have taken the real one) and forced Merkel out at second. After finding the umpire in the crowd he was convinced to call Merkel out. The game was replayed later after the commissioner ruled foulplay and the Giants lost. The game decided the pennant and the Cubs went on to win along with the world series.
On FootballOutsiders.com they have 2 awards that resulted from dumb mistakes. One for college and one for the pros. The college one is for John L. Smith (former Louisville and Mich St.) coach who made bad in game decisions with regularity. The other is the Keeping Chopping Wood (KCW) Trophy named for Jack Del Rio locker room escapade with an axe and a tree stump that ended up with an injured kicker as a result of poor axe usage.
With all due respect, you are not allowed to find our division rivals sexy.
and love the new sig.

If it comes down to the final game of the season
I wonder what the ruling would be if the Broncos somehow weren’t able to make it to the stadium…wink, wink.
Broncos automatically win?

Horrific officiating
But Norv and Company were awful in that last minute. I know it’s a ridiculous call and they had absolutely every right to be pissed, but get your act together, get the players settled and win the game. Maybe you can’t stop them from scoring the touchdown – momentum and all – but to gag on stopping the two pt conversion is inexcusable. They were more focused on Hochuli’s mistake and getting hosed than on stopping the Denver offense.

exactly
we got caught up in our Hockuly Hatred™ and couldn’t focus on finishing the game. We let them get the TD and the two? We might as well have served their offense tea and biscuits to aid in their comfort as we cry like little girls on our second straight loss. San Diego sports teams are all the same (except the Soccers.)

as if we needed more proof that i have the ability to be the san diego sports antichrist
not only was i on the move again during this game. i was on an airplane. thats way worse than driving.
and i was flying back from denver no less.
however, while my plane was airborne the chargers actually did come back and take the lead, only to blow a herd of goats while i was waiting for my pickup outside terminal 1.
so i don’t even know what to think…
