Teddy C!

Wow…his defense makes Dave Adolph’s and Tom Bass’s look like Bill Arnsparger!

Since we won't be getting rid of Cottrel this year

It would be nice to see a change in defensive schemes. Here is a really good post, if not a bit lengthy, from MHR discussing team identity and system breakdowns. A lot of what the poster said could be applied to the current state of the Chargers.

Once Again

They playcalling was pretty good from Ted Cottrell this week. However the players just aren’t executing. Poor tackling, poor push from the DLine on running plays and no one can get of their blocks or avoid blockers in the pass rush. The defensive problems are a talent and effort problem, not a playcalling problem.

How can you possibly say it is a talent issue?

Cromartie and Jammer are two of the most talented cornerbacks in the NFL, the front three are also some of the best in the NFL, and we are reknowned around the league to have the deepest and most talented LB corps. Additionally, you admit it is an effort problem which lands squarely on the coaching. If there is no motivation from the coaching, then there is no effort on the field.

Thirdly, how can you say there has been good playcalling? Using the same vanilla zones and blitzs over and over again until my eyes rot out of my skull is NOT good play calling. Brees was tearing up the zone defenses all day. All day there were wide recievers wide open with defenders looking around not covering anybody. Everytime Brees threw a deep ball they were in zone. Eric Weddle and Clinton Hart did 90% of the coverage on wide recievers because everyone else was camping out in their zones with nothing to do.

Not only are these playcalls not good in themselves, they are not even at least unique or creative. Obviously missing Merriman hurts, but he is not a football god sent down by the heavens to be the only effective LB in the history of the NFL. This is not a case of a lack of player talent, but a lack of coaching talent. Cottrell’s blitzes are so vanilla Ben and Jerry’s is looking to hire him. Calling a man coverage twice in a game doesn’t make for good playcalling. Our defenders do not look like they are even close. Rather they look completely Lost and Bewildered. They are obviously good football players, so being in that state is NOT a case of lack of talent. Ted Cottrell’s such utter lack of competancy, playcalling, and leadership abilities make Sarah Palin look like a Nobel Prize winner. There is absolutely no reason for him to be employed right now.

Claims

You claim that our front 3 is “some of the best in the NFL”, but they play like crap. They aren’t any good.

Our deep and talented linebacker corps is neither deep nor talented.

Using Brees as an example of why our defense sucks is a poor example. He shreds lots of defenses. It proves our defense isn’t great, but it doesn’t prove that it sucks. If we can’t stop KC’s offense, then you could start making claims.

I don’t get what you have against zone. If the safeties don’t play zone they will be in man to man. If you put a safety man to man on anybody in the NFL other than a blocking TE they will get beat. Every defense uses safeties in zone. Playing man to man creates mismatches that opponents can exploit. You play zones to confuse the QB while the pressure gets there, but since our front 7 sucks the QB’s can wait for their guys to get between zones.

Playcalling on defense doesn’t need to be creative if you have talent. You just need a system that players buy into and do their jobs. The Chargers defense is not talented and doesn’t do their jobs and they make dumb penalties. Playcalling is the least of their problems. I really, really think you are barking up the wrong tree.

Exactly

" You play zones to confuse the QB while the pressure gets there, but since our front 7 sucks the QB’s can wait for their guys to get between zones."

Once again, insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.” If we KNOW that our front seven can’t get to the QB and that zones will be ineffective, why insist on still using them, over and over again? I mean an eight game sample is a pretty good indicator that something isn’t working.

It’s not just Brees. How about Cutler, Delhomme, Pennignton, Edwards, even Jamarcus Russel had an easy time.

The CBs are playing zone, leaving the safties to cover the WRs, not the other way around. and I’m sure Jamal Williams and his three straight pro bowl selections would disagree with you.

“The Chargers defense is not talented and doesn’t do their jobs and they make dumb penalties.” “You just need a system that players buy into and do their jobs.”

Players not doing their jobs, a system that players buy into, and players making dumb penalties are all coaching problems.

The last part is that every defensive player on the team sucks. That’s a pretty bold statement if you ask me.

Players not doing their jobs.
Players not buying into the system.
Players making dumb penalties.

That sounds like a “Players” problem to me.

Two games

We have done well defensively were against the Jets and NE. In both we went with more man to man and less zone. With the zone bend but don’t break, you give up these lengthy drives that both wears down our defense and keeps the offense off the field. We have one of the worst time of possession rates in the league. Also you say the safeties shouldn’t be covering receiving TEs, but in the zone you get folks like Dobbins covering the middle; Zach Miller blasted by him like his feet were in cement, Hart went to provide over the top help on the WR, and they went all the way. We are terrible in covering the TEs in zone, whats the big loss?

Also the blitz schemes do not seem particularly clever; and admittedly, maybe that’s because the folks carrying them out aren’t good enough, but there is zero creativity. I can’t recall the last time I saw a good delayed blitz, and would like to see more stunts; and lets bring the safety or cb more. Watch Pittsburgh blitz and try and pick out who is coming, they really mix it up well.
